Cattle slaughter increases by 7.2% between Q1 and Q2

In the 2nd quarter of 2010 a total 7.587 million cattle head were slaughtered, representing increase of 7.2% in relation to the immediately previous quarter and of 10% in comparison with the same period of 2009. The two rising indexes confirm a trend to increase, after significant decreases observed since the 3rd quarter of 2008. The number of cattle head slaughtered went back to a level of 7.6 million units, reached in the previous period due to the world financial crisis. 

 

 

 

The change of 10.0% versus the figure in the same period of 2009 results from the performance of the South and Central West Regions, which increased, respectively, 26.1% and 12.9%. Mato Grosso, with more 145 thousand head slaughtered, is the highlight among Federation Units.

 

The weight of carcasses amounted to 1.825 million metric tons, about 8.0% more than in the immediately previous period, and 12.2% compared to the figure in the 2nd quarter of 2009. The average weight increased 0.68% in relation to the 1st quarter, recording 240.6 kg per animal. 

 

A total 1,437 informants took part in this survey, versus 1,430 in the first quarter.

 

 

In the 2nd quarter, 1,236 billion chickens were slaughtered, with increase of 2.4% versus the immediately previous quarter and 5.8% versus the same period in 2009. The total weight of carcasses was 2,670 million metric tons, 5.6% bigger between the last two quarters. In relation to the same period in 2009, there was even more significant increase (8.8%). The average weight of animals changed by 3.1%, and increased from 2.09 kg to 2.16 kg.

 

A total 321 informants took part in this survey, versus 320 in the previous quarter.

 

The slaughter of hogs and pigs increase 3.3% in relation to the immediately previous quarter and 6.6% compared to the same period in 2009. As a result, production amounted to 8.067 million head. Since the 3rd quarter of 2008, the volume of hogs and pigs slaughtered has surpassed that of cattle.

 

Production amounted to 767,396 thousand metric tons, with increase of 5.8% in relation to the previous quarter and 4.9% in relation to the 2nd quarter of 2009.

 

A total 885 informants took part in this survey, versus 896 in the previous quarter.

 

 

The acquisition of milk amounted to 4.906 billion liters in the 2nd quarter, recording decrease of 6.3% over the 1st quarter and 14.2% over the same period of 2009. Minas Gerais held 27.8% of the total, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (128%).

 

 

Minas Gerais, versus the performance in the same period of 2009, recorded significant increase (20.1%); and Rio Grande do Sul, 10.2%. Production accumulated in the year increased 9.9% over the same quarter in the previous year.

 

There was production of 4.889 billion liters of industrialized Milk in the 2nd quarter, decrease of 6.2% in versus the immediately previous period and increase of 14.5% versus the 2nd quarter of 2009.

 

A total 2,043 informants took part in this survey.

 

The acquisition of leather rawhide was 9.157 million in the 2nd quarter, being 7.7% above the figure observed in the 1st quarter and 12.3% above the figure in the same period of 2009. Most leather rawhide came from slaughterhouses (63.0%). São Paulo acquired the most leather in the 2nd quarter (18.6% of the national total), followed by Mato Grosso (13.5%).

 

About 29.1% of all the leather received to be tanned comes from Mato Grosso, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (18.8%). A total 9.193 million units have become industrialized, what represented increase of 8.8% over the 1st quarter and 14.3% over the second quarter of 2009. The main product used in leather tannery is chrome (in 95.9% of the cases); only 4.1% of leather is tanned with tannin.  The difference between acquisition of leather pieces and the volume of animals slaughtered was 20.7% in the 2nd quarter, versus20.2% in the 1st quarter and 18.2% in the same period of 2009.

 

A total 136 informants took part in this survey in the 2nd quarter, versus 135 in the immediately previous period.

 

The production of hen’s eggs was 610.627 million dozens in the 2nd quarter, being almost stable (0.9%) versus the previous period and presenting increase of 5.1% versus the same period of 2009.

 

In all the 1st quarter, production was bigger than in respective periods in the previous year. the biggest amount produced came from São Paulo (30.4% of the national total), followed by Minas Gerais (12.0%); and the main positive changes occurred in Mato Grosso (75.7%) and Rio Grande do Norte (44.6%) The main decreases were recorded by the Federal District (-22.2%) and Pernambuco (-8.6%).

 

A total 1,536 informants took part in this survey, versus 1,542 in the 1st quarter.
