The unemployment rate remained stable compared with July (6.9%) and dropped 1.4 percentage points in relation to August of 2009. It was the lowest rate since the beginning of the historical series in March of 2002. The unemployed population (1.6 million) also remained stable in the monthly comparison, but decreased by 15.3% (or less 289 thousand people) in relation to August of 2009. The employed population (22.1 million) remained stable in the monthly comparison and grew 3.2% (or more 691 thousand jobs) in the year. The number of workers with a formal contract (10.2 million) remained stable in the month and grew 7.2% (or 685 thousand jobs) in the year. The workers’ real average income usually earned (R$ 1,472.10) rose 1.4% in the monthly comparison and 5.5% compared with August of last year. The volume of real average income usually earned by employed persons (R$ 32.9 billion) grew 1.8% in relation to July and 8.8% in relation to August of last year.


The volume of the effective real average income usually earned by employed persons (R$ 32.5 billion in July of 2010) grew 1.6% in the month (June) and 9.2% in relation to July of 2009.

 

 

The unemployment rate of August, 6.7%, was the lowest since the beginning of the survey series started in March of 2002 for the six metropolitan regions. This rate remained stable compared with July. In the comparison with August of last year (8.1%), the rate dropped 1.4 percentage points.

 

The average unemployment rate between January and August was estimated in 7.2%, recording a fall of 1.3 percentage points compared with the same period of last year (8.5%).

 

Regionally, the unemployment rate remained stable compared with July in all regions. In the yearly analysis, the rate registered a fall of 1.9 percentage points in Recife, of 2.3 percentage points in Belo Horizonte and in São Paulo and of 0.8 percentage points in Porto Alegre. In Salvador and in Rio de Janeiro, it remained stable.

 

The number of unemployed persons (1.6 million in the total of the six surveyed regions) did not change in the month and dropped 15.3% in the year, that is, 289 thousand people less in this condition.

 

 

 

The employed population, estimated in 22.1 million in August of 2010 in the total of the six regions, remained unchanged in the monthly evaluation. Compared with August of last year, it rose 3.2%, reflecting an addition of 691 thousand jobs in the period of one year.

 

In the total of the six metropolitan regions, the number of employed persons remained stable in relation to previous July. In the annual comparison, there was an increase in Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security, 4.9% and Other services, 9.4%. The House services group was the only one to register a contraction, 7.1%.

 

The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (10.2 million) remained stable in August of 2010 in the total of the six regions and, in relation to August of last year, it grew 7.2%, representing an increment of 685 thousand jobs with a formal contract in this period.

 

The workers’ real average income usually earned, estimated in August of 2010 in R$ 1,472.10 in the total of the six regions, rose 1.4% in the monthly comparison. Compared with August of last year, the employed persons’ purchasing power increased by 5.5%.

 

 

 


 

The workers’ real average income usually earned in the regional analysis, in relation to July, grew in Recife (4.4%), Salvador (3.3%), Rio de Janeiro (2.5%) and in São Paulo and Porto Alegre (0.7). It was stable in Belo Horizonte. Compared with August of last year, all regions registered a high: Recife (17.5%), Salvador (7.7%), Belo Horizonte (6.6%), Rio de Janeiro (5.7%), São Paulo (3.8%) and Porto Alegre (6.4%).

 

The volume of real average income usually earned by employed persons, (R$ 32.9 billion) in August of 2010, was 1.8% higher than the one registered in July. In relation to August of last year, the volume grew 8.8%.

 

The employed persons’ volume of effective real average income (R$ 32.5 billion in July of 2010) grew 1.6% in the month (June) and 9.2% in relation to July of 2009.
