The unemployment rate of July (6.9%) was the lowest for this month, since the beginning of the survey initiated in March, 2002, being statistically stable in relation to June (7.0%) and decreasing 1.1 percentage point in relation to July, 2009 (8.%). The unemployed population (1.6 million) was stable in the month and decreased 11.3% in the comparison by year. The employed population (22.0 million) remained stable in the month and increased 3.2% in relation to July, 2009. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (10.2 million) was stable in the month, but increased 5.9% in relation to July 2009. The average real income of workers (R$ 1,452.50) grew 2.2% in the month and 5.1% in the year. The volume of average real income of employed workers (R$ 32.3 billion) in July, 2010, grew 3.0% in relation to June and 8.7% in relation to July 2009. The volume of effective real income of employed persons1 (R$ 32.0 billion) grew 3.2% in the month and 8.8% in the year.

In July of 2010, in the group of the six metropolitan regions surveyed by the Monthly Employment Survey of IBGE (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife and Porto Alegre), the unemployment rate was 6.9%, the lowest for this month since the beginning of this survey series started in March of 2002. The rate remained statistically stable compared to June (7.0%) and dropped 1.1 percentage points in relation to July of 2009 (8.0%). The average, between January and July, of the unemployment rate (7.3%) dropped 1.2 percentage points compared with the same period last year (8.5%).

 

 

Regionally, the unemployment rate presented significant change in Recife (from 8.6% in June to 10.0% in July). In the annual analysis, there were drops of 1.0 percentage point in Belo Horizonte, of 0.9 pp in Rio de Janeiro, of 1.7 pp in São Paulo and of 1.0 pp in Porto Alegre.

 

 


 

The employed population in all the six metropolitan regions remained stable in all the activity groups compared with June. In the annual comparison, there was a rise in the following groups: water, gas and electricity supply, processing and quarrying industry (7.1%); education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (4.5%) and other services (5.6%). There was a fall only in the group of house services (-5.4%).

 

The average real income usually earned by workers ((R$ 1,452.50) raised 2.2% in the month and 5.1% in the year. Compared to June there was a rise in Recife (2.1%), Salvador (1.4%), Belo Horizonte (4.9%), Rio de Janeiro (2.0%) and São Paulo (2.2%). There was a drop in Porto Alegre (-1.2%). Compared to July last year, all regions registered increase: Recife (11.7%), Salvador (2.3%), Belo Horizonte (8.4%), Rio de Janeiro (4.3%), São Paulo (4.4%) and Porto Alegre (6.1%).

The volume of the average real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 32.3 billion) in July of 2010 rose 3.0% compared with June and 8.7% in relation to July of 2009. Increases were registered in Salvador (2.1%), Belo Horizonte (6.8%), Rio de Janeiro (2.7%) and São Paulo (3.3%). There was a drop in Recife (1.0%) and stability in Porto Alegre.

 

On the other hand, the volume of effective real income earned by the employed population increased 3.2% in the month and 8.8% in the year.
