The Extended National Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15) had a variation of 0.19% in June, a rate inferior to that of May (0.63%). With this result, the variation of the Special Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA-E, accumulated of IPCA-15) was 1.30% in the second quarter of this year, little below that of the second quarter of 2009 (1.33%) and closed the first half of 2010 at 3.35%, a result superior to that of the same period of the previous year (2.49%). Considering the last 12 months, the index was 5.06%, below the 12 immediately previous months (5.26%). In June 2009, IPCA-15 had been 0.38%.

From the rise of 1.00%, recorded in the month of May, to the fall of 0.42% in June, the group food products and beverages was the responsible for the sharp decrease of IPCA-15 from one month to the other. Except for the metropolitan areas of Recife and Belém, where food products showed relative stability (0.04% and 0.01%, respectively), in the other areas prices decreased, reaching -0.87% in Belo Horizonte.

Some food products became much cheaper, such as tomatoes (from -11.08% in May to -16.30% in June), potatoes (from 17.83% to -11.06%), crystallized sugar (from -2.71% to -11.76%) and refined sugar (from -0.22% to -9.49%). Besides, carioca beans (from 31.75% in May to 6.66% in June) and other beans increased less. However, even with food products in decrease, the item meals out of home had an increase of 0.95% in June, repeating the variation recorded in May, making the major contribution in the month: 0.04 percentage point.

As shown in the following table, not only the group food products decreased from May to June.

Only household articles (from 0.03% in May to 0.73% in June), with highlights being household appliances (from 0.73% to 0.98%) and furniture (from -0.23% to 0.91%) and the group personal expenses (from 0.58% to 0.61%) presented results superior to those of May. The item cigarettes, with variation of 1.88% due to the price readjustment in brands of one of the manufacturers, was a highlight in personal expenses.

Consequently, the group non-food products had a variation of 0.37% in June, below the 0.52% of May.

The liter of ethanol fuel (from -2.78% to -7.59%) became even cheaper, influencing prices of gasoline (from 0.45% to -0.69%). Other products and services also presented lower rhythm of growth from May to June, e.g. medicines (from 2.14% to 0.84%) and salaries of domestic servants (from 1.12% to 0.58%).

Among regional indexes, the highest were those of Brasília and Salvador, both with 0.41%. In Brasília, plane fares stood out, whose rise of 13.44% led to the contribution of 0.16 percentage point in the area. In Salvador increases in electricity (2.38%) and water and sewage fares (3.83%), with 0.06 percentage point each, made a contribution of 0.12 percentage point. The lowest regional index was recorded in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (-0.04%), with the decrease of 0.72% in prices of food products standing out.

For the calculation of IPCA-15, prices collected from May 14 to June 14 were compared to those in effect from April 14 to May 13. The indicator refers to families with monthly income ranging from one to 40 minimum wages and encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. The methodology is the same used for IPCA; the difference lies in the period of price collection.
