Employment in industry increased 0.4% in April

From March to April, industrial employment increased by 0.4% (seasonally adjusted series), recording its fourth consecutive positive result. Compared to April 2009, the increase of employment reached 3.3%, the highest figure since February 2008 (3.5%), and the index accumulated in the year, 1.3%. The number of hours paid in March was practically stable, with rise of 0.1%compared to the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. In relation to the same month in the previous year, there was increase of 4.2%, the biggest change since December 2004 (4.7%), and accumulated increase of 2.4% in the year. Real payroll declined 0.4% from March to April (seasonally adjusted figures), recording its first decrease after three month with rising results. Compared to April 2009, there was increase of 5.4%, resulting in 3.8% accumulated in the first four months of 2010.

 

Industrial employment increased 0.4% in April 2010, when compared to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. The last four months recorded positive rates, having accumulated increase of 2.0% in the period. As a result, the quarterly moving average increased 0.6% between the quarters which ended in March and April, and has remained on an upward trend since July 2009.

 

Compared to the same month in 2009, the increase of 3.3% of salaried employed persons is the highest since the 3.5% recorded in February 2008. The index accumulated in the first four months of 2010 reached 1.3%, being above the increase recorded in the first quarter (0.7%). In the index accumulated in the last 12 months, there was reduced rhythm of increase, with change from -4.1% in March to -3.4% in April.

 

The increase of the monthly index (3.3%) is the third consecutive positive result. All the areas investigated (14) recorded positive rates, and the main impact on the formation of the overall rate came from São Paulo (2.8%). It was followed by the Northeast Region (5.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.9%), and North and central West Region (4.6%), besides Ceará (8.9%). There was increase in 12 subsectors, especially food products and beverages (4.4%), textiles (11.7%), electronic machines and communication equipment (7.3%), apparel (6.5%) and means of transportation (3.4%). In the Northeast, the main positive contributions came from footwear and leather articles (17.6%) and food products and beverages (6.7%). In the industry of Rio Grande do Sul, some highlights were machinery and equipment (9.6%), other products from manufacturing industry (12.7%), rubber and plastic (13.5%) and means of transportation (7.7%). In the North and Central West Regions, and in Ceará, the main positive contributions came from food products and beverages (4.6%) and non-metallic minerals (24.2%); footwear and leather articles (19.6%) and food products and beverages (8.8%) accounted, respectively, for the main positive contributions.

 

Also in comparison with figures in April 2009, there was increase of the number of employed persons in 13 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, mainly in the groups food products and beverages (2.7%), metal products (6.9%), machinery and equipment (5.8%), footwear and leather articles (7.0%), means of transportation (4.6%), machinery and equipment and electronic machines and communication equipment (6.7%) and textiles (7.1%). Among the five decreasing subsectors, the main negative impact came from wood (-8.7%).

 

The indicator accumulated ended this fourth-month period with increase of 1.3%, opposite to the decrease which occurred in the last four quarters of 2009 (-4.7%), in comparison with the same periods in previous years. From January to April 2010, 12 areas and subsectors there was increase of the number of employed persons. Among the areas, São Paulo (1.6%), Northeast Region (3.3%), Ceará (8.1%%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.6%%) accounted for the main positive contributions to the overall index, at the same time that Minas Gerais (-1.1%) and Paraná (-0.4%) recorded the only two negative rates. By subsector, the most relevant positive contributions came from food products and beverages (1.7%), footwear and leather articles (4.9%), paper and printing  (4.6%) and textiles (5.1%). On the other hand, wood (-11.0%) and apparel (-2.3%) were responsible for the major negative contributions.

 

Number of hours paid increased in all the areas surveyed

The number of hours paid remained practically stable (0.1%) in April 2010, compared to March, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having increased  1.4% in February and 1.2% in March. As a result, the quarterly moving average increased 0.9% between April and March and has remained on an upward since July 2009.

Compared to April 2009, the increase of 4.2% is the third consecutive positive rate and also the biggest increase since December 2004 (4.7%). The index accumulated in the first four months of 2010 increased

2.4%, being above that of the first quarter (1.8%). The rate recorded in the last 12 months, on an upward trend since January, changed from -4.0% in March to -3.1% in April, the best result since June 2009 (-2.3%).

 

In the comparison April 2010 / April 2009, the number of hours paid increased in the 14 areas and in 14 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The main  positive contributions came from means of transportation (9.3%), food products and beverages (3.1%), machinery and equipment (8.6%) and metal products (7.1%). The main negative contribution occurred in the subsector of wood (-7.8%). Among the areas, São Paulo (4.0%) accounted for the main impact on the national result, being followed by the Northeast Region (5.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (5.8%), North and Central West Region and (4.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.9%). In the industry of São Paulo, there was increase of the number of hours paid by 13, among which can be highlighted: means of transportation (7.6%), food products and beverages (4.7%) and textiles (13.4%). In the Northeast,  footwear and leather articles (16.2%) and food products and beverages (6.2%) accounted for the main contributions, whereas in Rio Grande do Sul, the main subsectors in terms of contribution to the overall rate were machinery and equipment (13.3%), other products from manufacturing industry (17.2%) and means of transportation (15.2%). In the North and Central West Region, and in Rio de Janeiro,  the highlights were, respectively, non-metallic minerals (25.6%) and food products and beverages (3.3%); and means of transportation (19.2%) and metallurgy (29.2%).

  

In the first four months of 2010, the number of hours paid increased  2.4%, interrupting the decreases recorded in four-month periods of 2009 (-5.3%, -7.1% and -4.3%), being all comparisons versus the same period in the previous year. In the formation of the accumulated index, all the places and 14 activities recorded increases.

 

By subsector, the main positive impacts came from food products and beverages (2.7%), means of transportation (5.5%), machinery and equipment (5.0%), paper and printing (5.5%), footwear and leather articles (4.4%) and textiles (5.1%), whereas the industries of wood (-11.2%) and apparel (-2.1%) accounted for the main negative rates. Among the areas, São Paulo (3.1%), Northeast Region (3.5%), Ceará (8.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.5%) recorded the major positive figures.

 

Real payroll increased in all the areas in 2010

In April 2010, the seasonally adjusted real payroll decreased 0.4% in relation to March, after having increased for three consecutive months and accumulated increase of 9.4% in this period. As a result, the quarterly moving average increased 1.1%, the fourth consecutive positive rate and has accumulated 1.1% since January.

Compared to April 2009, real payroll increased 5.4% and recorded its fourth consecutive result in this type of comparison. The indicator accumulated in the first few months of the year increased 3.8%. In the last 12 months, on an upward trend since December (-2.7%), the indicator increased 0.5 percentage points between March (-1.8%) and April (-1.3%).

In the comparison April 2010 / April 2009, real payroll increased in all the 14 areas surveyed; the main positive contribution came from  São Paulo (3.2%), especially due to food products and beverages (9.9%), electronic machines and communication equipment (12.5%) and non-metallic minerals (14.9%). Also significant was the impact from industries in Rio de Janeiro (10.1%) and their increases in means of transportation (38.1%) and mining and quarrying industry (6.1%); Paraná (9.3%) due to means of transportation (15.3%) and machinery and equipment (21.0%); and Rio Grande do Sul (7.9%) because of the subsectors of machinery and equipment (14.0%) and means of transportation (18.3%).

By subsector, also in terms of the monthly indicator, real payroll increased in 17 of the 18 subsectors. The main positive contributions came from food products and beverages (6.7%), machinery and equipment (7.0%), electronic machines and communication equipment (10.0%), means of transportation (3.0%) and non-metallic minerals (10.5%). The only negative rate was that of wood (-5.1%).

 

The index accumulated from January to April 2010 was 3.8%, differently from those observed in the four-month periods of 2009 (-0.7%, -3.3% and -3.9%), all comparisons relative to similar period in the previous years. In the formation of the rate of 3.8%, there were increases in all the areas, mainly in São Paulo (2.5%), Rio de Janeiro (8.9%) and Paraná (7.2%). In these areas, the main increases to salary volume came, respectively, from paper and printing (13.7%), electronic machines and communication equipment (15.4%) and food products and beverages (5.4%); means of transportation (24.6%), chemical products (12.7%) and mining and quarrying industry (5.3%); and machinery and equipment (17.3%), means of transportation (9.6%) and chemical products (23.6%).

 

In terms of subsector, there was increase of real payroll in 15 of the 18 activities surveyed and the main positive contributions came from food products and beverages (4.9%), paper and printing (10.2%), electronic machines and communication equipment (10.1%), means of transportation (2.7%) and chemical products (4.4%). The three main negative contributions to the overall rate in the first four months of the year came from metallurgy (-2.9%), wood (-7.7%) and metal products (-0.5%).
