In March, industry advances in 12 of the 14 subsectors surveyed

Between February and March, the seasonally-adjusted regional indexes of industrial production increased in 12 of the 14 subsectors surveyed by IBGE, especially in Paraná (18.6%), Amazonas (10.1%), Pernambuco (4.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.1%) and Santa Catarina (3.7%), which increases over the national average (2.8%). Other areas presenting positive rates were: Minas Gerais (2.8%), Espírito Santo (2.2%), Rio de Janeiro and Northeast Region (both with 1.8%), Bahia (0.9%), Pará (0.7%) and São Paulo (0.6%). Ceará (-0.3%) and Goiás (-6.8%) were the only areas facing decrease of this indicator.

 

Compared to March 2009, the 14 areas recorded positive rates, reflecting the deceleration of production and also a reduced basis for comparison, as a result of the effects of the world economic crisis. Changes ranged between 45.0%, in Espírito Santo and 7.0%, in Pará. With results above the national average (19.7%), besides Espírito Santo were Amazonas (39.9%), Pernambuco (25.3%), Paraná and Goiás (both with 23.7%) and Minas Gerais (22.4%). The other positive results came from: São Paulo (18.4%), Santa Catarina (17.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (16.4%), Northeast Region (14.6%), Ceará (14.4%), Rio de Janeiro (11.4%), Bahia (9.5%) and Pará (7.0%).

 

All the 14 areas surveyed advanced in the first quarter of 2010, in relation to figures recorded in the last quarter of 2009, being the main highlights the increases in Goiás (13.7%), Amazonas (11.6%), Pernambuco (7.6%) and Espírito Santo (7.1%). The national average was 3.0%. Overall increase also occurred in the comparison Q1 2010/Q1 2009. The states with rates above the national average (18.1%) were Espírito Santo (44.1%), Amazonas (32.3%), Goiás (26.7%) and Minas Gerais (25.3%). São Paulo had increase of 18.1%.

 


Amazonas

 

In March, the industry of Amazonas grew 10.1% in comparison with the previous month. There was increase of 39.9% versus the figure in March 2009, the fifth consecutive positive rate in this type of comparison and the highest one since the beginning of this time series (January 2002). Production increased 32.3% in the first quarter of 2010, compared to the same period in 2009, and 11.6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2009 (seasonally adjusted). The rate obtained in the last 12 months increased 2.5% in March, the first positive result since January 2009.

 

The increase of the monthly index by 39.9% had an overall profile (reaching 10 of the 11 subsectors surveyed), mainly food products and beverages (57.1%), electronic material and communication equipment (52.0%) and machinery and equipment (105.6%).

 

In terms of the figure accumulated in the first quarter of the year, there was increase of 32.3%, due to the performance of nine subsectors, among which the main positive contributions to the overall index came from food products and beverages (41.2%) and electronic material and communication equipment (37.5%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 5.3% between February and March, and has remained on an upward trend since May 2009.

 

Pará

 

In March 2010, the industry of Pará increased 0.7% in comparison February; it was the fourth consecutive positive rate (accumulated gain of 7.7%). Compared to March 2009, there was increase of 7.0%. With reference to the first quarter, there was increase both in relation to the same period in 2009 (7.4%) and to the immediately previous quarter (5.8%). The rate relative to the last 12 months presented a negative result (–4.1%), but has remained on an upward trend since November (-7.9%).

 

The increase of 7.0% in the overall index occurred in four of the six activities which presented increasing figures. The main positive contributions came from mining and quarrying industry (14.6%), non-metallic minerals (40.6%) and cellulose and paper (25.2%).

 

Between the periods October-December 2009 and January-March 2010,three of the six activities presented bigger dynamism, especially mining and quarrying industry, which changed from -2.9% to 7.6%. In the indicator accumulated in the year, compared to the same period in 2009, there was increase in four subsectors: mining and quarrying industry (17.3%), non-metallic minerals (38.3%) and food products and beverages (10.1%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 1.9% between February and March, and has remained on a downward trend since last October.

 

Northeast Region

 

In March, the industrial production of the Northeast Region increased 1.8% in relation to the previous month; it was the eighth consecutive positive rate (with accumulated increase of 13.9%). Industry in the Northeast Region grew 14.6% in relation to March 2009 and 11.7% in terms of the index accumulated in the three first months of the year. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months increased 0.4%, and has remained on a downward trend since September (-7.3%). Compared to the immediately previous quarter, the industry of the Northeast Region, with increase of 3.9%, reached its third quarter with consecutive increase.

 

The increase of the monthly indicator (14.6%) occurred in all the 11 activities surveyed, showing positive results, mainly in food products and beverages (16.9%), chemical products (9.7%), metallurgy (32.1%) and textiles (19.5%).

 

On a quarterly basis, industrial production in the Region accelerated between the fourth quarter of 2009 and the fist one of 2010, with gain in all the subsectors, mainly metallurgy (from -0.7% to 35.6%); food products and beverages (from 0.5% to 3.3%) and electric machines, material and equipment (from -10.7% to 48.1%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 1.5%, the tenth consecutive positive result.

 

Ceará

 

The industrial production of Ceará recorded negative results in March 2010, having decreased 0.3% in comparison with February. There was increase of 14.4% in relation to March 2009 and of 15.6% accumulated in the first quarter of the year. The industry of Ceará grew 4.4% in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the fourth quarter of 2009. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months increased 1.5%, the first positive rate since February 2009 (0.9%).

 

The hike of 14.4% of the monthly indicator resulted from the expansion which occurred in eight of the tem subsectors surveyed, especially chemical products (79.4%), food products and beverages (8.7%) and footwear and leather articles (15.2%). Both negative contributions came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-18.2%) and electric machines, material and equipment (-7.6%).

 

In the analysis by quarter, among the eight subsectors with increased dynamism, can be highlighted: food products and beverages (from -15.2% in the fourth quarter of 2009 to 4.7% in the first quarter of 2010), chemical products (from 11.9% to 53.5%) and metallurgy (from -15.9% to 110.2%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 0.2% between February and March.

 

Pernambuco

 

The industrial production of Pernambuco increased 4.4% in March, versus the result in February. Compared to the figure of March 2009, there was increase of 25.3%, the highest rate since February 1995 (44.1%). Considering the index accumulated in the first three months of the year, there was increase of 16.0%. The indicator relative to the last 12 months increased 3.8%.

 

The hike of the monthly indicator resulted from positive rates in 10 of the 11 activities surveyed, especially chemical products (59.4%), food products and beverages (16.0%) and metallurgy (41.5%).

 

In the analysis by quarter, there was acceleration of increase from the last quarter of 2009 (4.7%) to the first quarter of 2010 (16.0%). Both comparisons refer to the same period in the previous year.

 

There were contributions from nine of the 11 subsectors surveyed, mainly metallurgy (from 11.5% to 45.1%), chemical products (from 12.3% to 43.6%) and rubber and plastic (from -4.4% to 34.4%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 5.2%.

 

Bahia

 

The industry of Bahia grew 0.9% in March, compared to the figure in February. Compared to March 2009, there was increase of 9.5%. The 1st quarter of 2010 recorded increase of 0.5% compared to the figure in the immediately previous quarter. The index accumulated in the last 12 months reached 0.7% in March, and had its first positive rate since January 2009 (0.8%).

 

The 9.5% increase of the monthly indicator resulted from hikes in seven of the nine activities surveyed, especially from petroleum refining and alcohol production (13.9%), food products and beverages (19.7%) and metallurgy (39.3%).

 

In the analysis by quarter, there was acceleration of increase between the fourth quarter of 2009 (8.6%) and the first quarter of 2010 (13.4%), being both comparisons relative to the same period in the immediately previous year. Similar change occurred in six of the subsectors surveyed, being less significant in metallurgy (from -7.6% in the last quarter of 2009 to 41.9% in the first quarter of 2010) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (from 2.9% to 13.6%).

 

The quarterly moving average recorded negative change (-0.3%).

 

Minas Gerais

 

The industrial sector of Minas Gerais grew 2.8% between February and March. Compared to March 2009, there was hike of 22.4%. The first quarter of 2010 recorded increases both in relation to the same period last year (25.3%) and compared to the index accumulated in the immediately previous quarter 4.5%). The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months was negative (-2.7%).

 

The hike of 22.4% in relation to March 2009 reached 10 of the 13 subsectors surveyed, and can be seen as a result of the performances of metallurgy (44.2%), mining and quarrying industry (56.4%), automotive vehicles (14.7%), machinery and equipment (68.1%), non-metallic minerals (19.1%) and food products (8.2%).

 

Considering the index accumulated in the year, the hike of 25.3% resulted from the performances of nine out of 13 subsectors, especially metallurgy (59.9%), mining and quarrying industry (57.9%) and machinery and equipment (106.7%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 2.3% between February and March, and has remained on an upward trend since March 2009.

 

Espírito Santo

 

The industry of Espírito Santo grew 2.2% in March, in relation to the figure in February. Compared to March 2009, there was increase of 45.0%, the major increment among14 areas surveyed. In the end of the first quarter, there were increases both compared to the same period of 2009 (44.1%) and to the fourth quarter of 2009 (7.1%). The index accumulated in the last 12 months was 1.1%.

 

The increase of the monthly index by 45.0% resulted from the positive performances of manufacturing industry (36.9%) and the mining and quarrying sector (67.1%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased 44.1%, compared to the same quarter last year, mainly due to the mining and quarrying subsector (116.4%), once manufacturing industry reduced its rhythm of increase to 24.88%.

 

The quarterly moving average increased 1.8% in the quarters which ended in February and March and has remained on an upward trend since March 2009.

 

Rio de Janeiro

 

In March 2010, the industrial production of Rio de Janeiro increased 1.8% compared to that of February. In relation to the same month in 2009, there was expansion (11.4%). In the end of the first quarter of 2010, indexes showed increase both in relation to the same period in the previous year (13.3%) and in relation to the last quarter of 2009 (1.0%). The index accumulated in the last twelve months was 1.9%.

 

The hike in the comparison March 2010/March 2009 was affected by manufacturing industry (16.0%), once the mining and quarrying subsector faced decrease (-3.2%),  and accounted for the first negative result since March 2008 (-2.0%). In the manufacturing industry, it is worth mentioning the hikes recorded by automotive vehicles (74.3%) and metallurgy (40.0%). On the other hand, the most significant impacts came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-25.7%) and non-metallic minerals (-19.0%).

 

The increase of 13.3% which occurred in the first quarter of the year resulted from the positive performance of eight of the thirteen subsectors surveyed, mainly automotive vehicles (72.8%) and metallurgy (56.1%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 0.4%, and has remained on an upward trend since March 2009.

 

São Paulo

 

The industrial production of São Paulo increased by 0.6% in March, compared to the figure in February. In relation to the same month in 2008, there was increase of 18.4%. The first quarter of 2010 recorded increases of 18.1% in comparison with the same period in the previous year and of 2.6% in comparison with the fourth quarter of 2009. The index accumulated in the last 12 months, on an upward trend since November, was -1.4%.

 

The hike of 18.4% of the monthly index resulted from the positive performances of 16 out of 20 subsectors surveyed, mainly: automotive vehicles (36.9%), machinery and equipment (45.9%), other chemical products (33.2%), metal products (49.8%), electric machines, appliances and material (40.8%), rubber and plastic (34.5%) and metallurgy (45.2%).

 

In the analysis by quarter, it was possible to observe acceleration of increase of the industry of São Paulo from the last quarter of 2009 (4.3%) to the first quarter of 2010 (18.1%), being both comparisons relative to the same period in the immediately previous year. The increase of rhythm reached 17 subsectors, especially machinery and equipment (from -5.2% to 37.5%), automotive vehicles (from 24.7% to 39.4%), metal products (from 8.5% to 56.6%), electronic material and communication equipment (from -40.4% to -3.7%) and other chemical products (from 10.9% to 30.1%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 0.8% between the quarters which ended in February and March , and was positive for the tenth consecutive month.

 

Paraná

 

The industry of Paraná grew 18.6% in March, versus February. Compared to March 2009, there was hike of 23.7%. In terms of quarterly indicators, the first quarter recorded increase of 12.7% versus the same period in 2009 and of 5.8% compared to the immediately previous quarter. The index accumulated in the last 12 months was 1.1%.

 

The hike of 23.7% in the monthly index resulted from the increase recorded by 10 out of 14 activities surveyed, especially automotive vehicles (54.1%), editing and printing (47.9%) and machinery and equipment (56.7%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the first quarter of the year pointed to increase of 12.7%, being the highlights automotive vehicles (67.5%), machinery and equipment (44.4%) and food products (1.1%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 4.1%, remaining on an upward trend since July 2009.

 

Santa Catarina

 

In March, the industrial production of Santa Catarina increased 3.7% compared to the February figure. In relation to March 2009, there was hike of 17.9%. The first quarter presented positive results both in relation to the same period in the previous year and (12.9%) and in relation to the fourth quarter of 2009 (2.9%). The index accumulated in the last 12 months was -1.7%.

 

The increase of 17.9% in the comparison March 2010/March 2009 resulted from the increase in 10 of the 11 subsectors surveyed, especially machinery and equipment (53.7%), electric machines, appliances and material (76.2%) and textiles (20.7%).

 

The index accumulated in the first quarter of the year was 12.9% supported by the increase in eight subsectors, especially machinery and equipment (43.8%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 1.33% between the quarters which ended in February and March, and has remained on a downward trend since May 2009.

 

 

Rio Grande do Sul

 

The industry of Rio Grande do Sul increased 4.1% in March, compared to the figure in February. In relation to March 2009, there was increase of 16.4%. Considering indexes by quarter, results were positive both in relation to the same quarter of 2009 (16.2%) and to the fourth quarter last year (1.0%). The index accumulated in the last 12 months was 0.2%.

 

The hike in relation to March 2009 reflects the increase in 10 of the 14 subsectors surveyed, especially in machinery and equipment (53.3%), automotive vehicles (42.7%) and food products (10.2%).

 

On a quarterly basis, the hike of 16.2% was supported by the increases in 11 activities, mainly machinery and equipment (from -17.3% to 33.0%), automotive vehicles (from 25.2% to 44.4%) and metal products (from -3.4% to 26.1%).

 

The quarterly moving average remained stable between March and February, after having decreased  0.7% in the previous year.

 

Goiás

 

In March 2010, the industrial production of Goiás decreased 6.8% compared to the figure in February. In relation to March 2009, there was increase of 23.7%. In the first quarter of 2010, there were increases of 26.7% compared to the same period in the previous year and of 13.7% compared to the last quarter of 2009. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months reached 7.7%.

 

The hike in the period March 2010/March 2009 resulted from manufacturing industry (26.7%), mainly due to the expansion of chemical products (135.8%) and food products and beverages (15.7%) which accounted for the main impacts on the overall rate.

 

On a quarterly basis, the production of Goiás increased 26.7% in the first quarter of the year, at a higher rate than in the last quarter in the previous year (4.4%); both comparisons refer to the same period in the previous year. Expansion resulted from the accelerated increase of three out of five subsectors especially chemical products (from 62.6% to 173.8%) and food products and beverages (from -7.4% to 11.4%).

 

The quarterly moving average increased 2.8%.
