Industrial production increases in nine of the 14 surveyed areas in November

In the comparison November 09/October 09, the regional seasonally adjusted indexes of industrial production were positive in nine of the 14 areas. Among the places that recorded positive rates, Goiás was the highlight with a two-digit increase (11.6%), compensating the decrease of 9.9% in the previous month. The other places that presented positive results were: Bahia (3.9%), Ceará (2.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%), São Paulo (1.6%), Amazonas (1.6%), the Northeast region (1.6%), Pernambuco (1.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.2%). On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-1.6%) showed the most expressive decrease, followed by Minas Gerais and Pará (both with -0.6%), and Paraná and Santa Catarina (both with -0.1%).

 

In relation to November 2008, generalized positive rates were observed, reaching 13 of the 14 surveyed areas. This demonstrates not only the industrial sector recovery, in a context of greater trust in the economy environment, but the low base of comparison, due to stock adjustments occurred at the end of last year. In this comparison, increases above national average (5.1%) were observed in Espírito Santo (21.3%), Goiás (10.9%), Amazonas and Rio Grande do Sul (both with 8.0%), Pernambuco (6.9%), Minas Gerais (6.5%) and Ceará (6.3%). The other positive results were: Paraná (4.9%), Santa Catarina (4.4%), Bahia (4.0%), the Northeast region (3.3%), São Paulo (2.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.5%). Conversely, the only place that presented a decrease in relation to November 2008 was Pará (-6.5%).

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in the eleven months of 2009, rates were negative in the fourteen area surveyed, and there was deceleration in the rhythm of decrease compared to results in September and October. With decreases above -9.3% in the national average are: Espírito Santo (-18.1%), Minas Gerais (-15.7%), São Paulo (-10.4%), Amazonas (-10.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-9.4%). In these areas, factors such as the reduced dynamism of typically-exported products, mainly commodities (iron ore and steel products) and the strong adjustment in the production of durable consumer goods (cars and electronic appliances) and of machinery and equipment were relevant to the industrial performance. Other results were: Santa Catarina (-9.2%) Pará (-8.0%), Bahia (-7.0%), Northeast Region (-6.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-5.3%), Ceará (-5.2%), Paraná (-4.3%), Pernambuco (-3.9%) and Goiás (-0.5%).

 

AMAZONAS – The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Amazonas, increased 1.6% in November compared to that in the previous month, after apparent stability in October (-0.2%). As a result, the quarterly moving average index (1.4%) had its seventh consecutive positive rate, having accumulated increase of 15.7% in this period.

 

In terms of the monthly index, eight of the eleven subsectors surveyed contributed positively to the increase of 8.0% in the industry of Amazonas. The main positive influence was that of food products and beverages (29.9%), followed by machinery and equipment (59.2%) and electronic material and communication equipment (9.3%). On the other hand, among the three activities with falling rates, the main highlight was other transportation equipment (-21.2%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the period January-November 2009 faced decrease of 10.1%, with negative rates in six subsectors. The decrease of the index accumulated in the last twelve months reached 10.0%, interrupting the upward trend observed since September 2008.

 

PARÁ – In November, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Pará faced decrease of 0.6% when compared to that in October, after having increased 1.1% in the previous month. Also considering the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, having changed 0.2% in November,  interrupted two months of decrease of this indicator: -1.5% in September and -0.6% in October.

 

Considering the monthly indicator, industry in the state faced 6.5% of decrease, with negative performances in five of the six activities surveyed. The fall of the mining and quarrying sector (-11.5%), due to the reduced extraction of iron ore, represented the main contribution to the formation of the overall rate. It is also worth mentioning the losses of metallurgy (-2.3%) and non-metallic minerals (-14.1%). On the other hand, food products and beverages (12.8%) was the only subsector with a positive rate in this type of comparison.

 

For longer periods, results were also negative: the indicator accumulated in the year decreased by 8.0% and the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months decreased 7.9%, having remained on a downward trend since December 2008 (5.6%).

 

NORTHEAST REGION – In November, the seasonally adjusted industrial production  of the Northeast Region increased 1.6 % compared to that in the immediately previous month, after being practically stable in October (-0.2%). Also considering the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index increased 1.1%, the sixth consecutive positive rate, having accumulated gain of 7.0% in the period.

 

Compared to results in November 2008, the industry in the Northeast Region increased 3.3%, with positive rates in six of the eleven subsectors surveyed, especially chemical products (8.7%). It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions from  footwear and leather articles (20.3%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (5.3%). On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from food products and beverages (-1.2%) and metallurgy (-4.4%).

 

In terms of the indicator accumulated in the year, the industrial production decreased  6.3%, with reduction in ten of the eleven activities surveyed. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months changed from  -7.2% in October to -6.6% in November, reversing the negative trend which started in October 2008 (3.8%).

 

CEARÁ – In November, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Ceará increased 2.8% in relation to the immediately previous month; it was the third consecutive positive rate, with accumulated increased of 7.7% in this period. With these results, the quarterly, the quarterly moving average index increased 2.5%; it was the third consecutive positive rate, resulting in accumulated increase of  5.1% in this period.

 

In terms of the monthly indicator, the industrial production of Ceará increased  6.3%, with production increases in seven of the ten activities surveyed. The main positive impact came from footwear and leather articles (41.3%). It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions from textiles (16.4%) and chemical products (14.1%). On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from food products and beverages (-16.5%) and apparel and accessories (-17.5%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the year decreased 5.2%, affected by the negative results of four of the tem subsectors surveyed. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months changed from -5.9% in October to -5.1% in November, interrupting the downward trend observed since September 2008 (3.8%).

 

PERNAMBUCO – In November 2009, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Pernambuco increased 1.0%, after two months with falling rates, which generated decrease of 1.3%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index was practically stable in November (-0.1%), after having presented positive rates for four consecutive months, and having accumulated increase of 6.6% in this period.

 

In the comparison November 09/November 08, industry in Pernambuco increased 6.9%, with increase in eight of the eleven activities surveyed. The main positive impact on the overall average came from  food products and beverages (6.3%), followed by chemical products (18.3%) and metallurgy (10.9%). On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-12.6%) and textiles (-24.9%).

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in January-November 2009, compared to the same period in 2008, industrial production decreased 3.9%, with negative results in ten of the eleven subsectors surveyed. The annualized rate, accumulated in the last twelve months, changed from -5.1% in October to -4.2% in November,reversing the downward trend which started in October 2008 (6.2%).

 

BAHIA – In November, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Bahia increased 3.9% in relation to that in the previous month, resulting in the fourth consecutive positive rate, in a period with accumulated gain of 13.0%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index increased 1.8%, the sixth consecutive positive rate, resulting in accumulated increase of 12.4% in the period.

 

In terms of the monthly indicator, the industrial production of Bahia increased 4.0%, with positive rates in six of the nine subsectors surveyed. The two main positive contributions came from the most important activities in the industry of Bahia: petroleum refining and alcohol production (8.6%) and chemical products (5.4%). It is also worth mentioning the increases observed in cellulose and paper (8.8%) and automotive vehicles (40.0%). On the other hand, the main negative impact came from metallurgy  (-17.2%).

 

Considering the index accumulated in the year, compared to that in the same period in 2008, the industrial production of Bahia decreased 7.0%, with reduction in seven of the nine subsectors surveyed. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, decreased by 7.5%, with reduction of the rhythm of decrease compared to the result in October (-8.1%) and interrupting the downward trend which started in September 2008 (5.1%).

 

MINAS GERAIS – In November 2009, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Minas Gerais, decreased 0.6% compared to that in October; it was the first negative rate after tem consecutive months of increase, a period in which it accumulated gain of 27.3%. Also in the series with seasonal adjustment, the quarterly moving average index increased 1.4% in November and has remained on an upward trend since last March.

 

Compared to November last year, industry grew 6.5%, reflecting the expanded production of automotive vehicles (51.8%), which was not only affected by a bigger production of cars, but also by a lower basis for comparison. It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions from other chemical products (16.3%) and food products (5.9%). Among the main negative impacts, it is worth mentioning the losses resulting from metal products (-18.2%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-9.6%).

 

For longer periods, the index remained negative when accumulated in the year (-15.7%)and in the last twelve months  (-16.6%), but with reduction of the rhythm of increase when compared to previous months.

 

ESPÍRITO SANTO – In November 2009, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Espírito Santo decreased 1.6% in comparison with October, after having accumulated 21.6% of increase since last July. Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average increased 1.5% and has remained on an upward trend since March 2008.

 

In the comparison November 09/ November 08, the industrial production of Espírito Santo increased 21.3%, being affected by the positive performance of manufacturing industry (36.6%), once the mining and quarrying  sector faced decrease of 6.1%. In manufacturing industry, the exception to non-metallic minerals, which decreased by 8.3%, affected by the decrease of cement; other subsectors had positive rates: metallurgy

(44.9%), cellulose and paper (63.6%), and food products and beverages (34.9%).

 

In terms of the indicator accumulated in the year, the industry of Espírito Santo faced decrease of 18.1%, with reduction in three of the five activities surveyed. The annualized rate, accumulated in the last twelve months also presented reduction of the rhythm of increase, by changing from -21.9% in October to -19.1% in November.

 

RIO DE JANEIROIn November 2009, the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production in Rio de Janeiro changed positively by 0.2% and kept a sequence of positive rates which started last September, having accumulated increase of 2.8% in the period. As a result, the quarterly moving average index decreased 0.9% in November and has remained on a downward trend in March 2009.

 

The increase of 1.5% in relation to November 2008, the first positive rate since the 10% of September 2008, resulted mainly from the expansion of mining and quarrying industry (10%), once manufacturing industry remain on a downward trend (-0.7%). Petroleum extraction has led to positive rates for about twenty months in the state. In manufacturing industry, which had its lowest rate since October 2008, six of the twelve activities had negative rates.  The most significant negative impacts came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-16.3%), non-metallic minerals (-24.6%) and editing and printing (-12.3%). On the other hand, among the subsectors with positive rates, the highlights were pharmaceutical industry (28.6%), beverages (14.0%) and metallurgy (8.9%).

 

The indicators accumulated in the year (-5.3%) and in the last twelve months (-5.6%) were negative, but with slight reduction of the rhythm of increase compared to results in September and October.

 

SÃO PAULOIn November, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of São Paulo increased 1.6% compared to the result in October; it was the fifth consecutive positive rate, resulting in accumulated result of 9.8%. in the period. As a consequence, the quarterly moving average has remained on an upward trend since last March, with accumulated increase of 14.6% in the period.

 

In terms of the quarterly index (2.1%), there was predominance of positive results, reaching fourteen of the twenty activities surveyed, especially automotive vehicles (19.5%), which also had its first expansion since October 2008. It is also worth mentioning the positive impacts from pharmaceutical articles (10.6%), editing and printing (10.1%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (7.7%) and rubber and plastic (9.6%). Among the sectors with reduction of production, the main contribution came from electronic material and communication equipment (-44.9%), followed by transportation equipment (-13.4%), machinery and equipment (-5.5%) and food products (-2.9%).

 

In terms of the indicators accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months, rates remained negative (-10.4% and -10.7%, respectively), but with reduction of the rhythm of decrease compared to results in October.

 

PARANÁ – The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Paraná remained stable in November (-0.1%), after having decreased 9.5% in October. Also considering the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, after increasing 1.4% in November, remained on an upward trend, as observed since last July, and having accumulated increase of 7.3% in the period.

 

In the comparison November 09/November 08, the increase of 4.9% was a consequence of positive results in most (eight) of the fourteen subsectors surveyed; the main positive contribution to the overall index came from editing and printing (60.9%), followed by machinery and equipment (11,6%) and other chemical products (40.5%). Among the subsectors with production decrease, the main overall contribution came from food products (-5.1%) and automotive vehicles (-5.2%).

 

In terms of other indicators, the industrial sector of Paraná remained presenting negative rates: -4.3% accumulated in the year and -4.4% in the last twelve months, repeating the October rate (-4.4%).

 

SANTA CATARINA – In November, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Santa Catarina was almost stable in terms of production (-0.1%) compared to the previous month, after two months of increase: 2.5% in September and 2.2% in October. Also in the series with seasonal adjustment, the quarterly moving average index confirmed the downward trend which started last May, by changing 1.5% in November.

  

In the comparison November 09/ November 08, there was increase of 4.4%, with increase of production in eleven subsectors surveyed. The main positive contributions came from electric machines, appliances and material (69.8%) and from machinery and equipment (22.0%). It is also worth mentioning the positive impacts of textiles (11.6%) and apparel and accessories (10.4%). On the other hand, among the three activities which faced decrease of production, the main influence came from automotive vehicles (-57.5%).

 

In terms of the indicator accumulated in January-November, compared to the same period in 2008, the overall decrease of industrial production was 9.2%, with reduction in nine of the eleven subsectors surveyed. Considering the index accumulated in the last twelve months, the rate was also -9.2%, and interrupted the downward trend which had been observed since October  2008.

 

RIO GRANDE DO SUL – In November 2009, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Rio Grande do Sul increased by 1.9% compared to the previous month; it was the sixth consecutive positive rate, with accumulated gain of 8.7% in the period. As a result, the quarterly moving average index, on an upward trend since last March, increased 1.2% in November.

 

In the comparison November 09/November 08, there was expansion of 8.0% for industry as a whole, and the main positive impacts on the overall result were petroleum refining and alcohol production (45.8%), other chemical products (36.0%) and automotive vehicles (28.6%). Among the eight subsectors with reduction of production of this indicator, the main one considering the formation of the overall rate was machinery and equipment, with decrease of 17.2%.

 

In other comparisons, however, rates were still negative: -9.4% accumulated in the year and -9.9% in the last twelve months.

 

GOIÁS – In November 2009, the industry of Goiás increased 11.6% in relation to the figure in October, after facing decrease of 9.9% in the previous month. As a result, the quarterly moving average increased once more (1.0%), after having decreased 4.9% in October.

 

In the monthly indicator, the increase of 10.9% may be seen as a consequence of the positive contribution of chemical products (108.3%), affected not only by the bigger production of medicines due to special orders, but also to the lower basis for comparison. It is also worth mentioning the positive results obtained by metallurgy (20.6%) and non-metallic minerals (14.8%). On the other hand, food products and beverages (-6.0%) accounted for the main negative impact.

 

In other comparisons, results were: -0.5% accumulated in the year and -0.3% accumulated in the last twelve months, with reduction of the rhythm of increase compared to that in the previous year (1.6% and -1.3%, respectively).
