Industrial employment increases 0.7% in October

NUMBER OF HOUR PAID

In October, there was continuous increase of the number of hour paid in production, compared to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, with expansion of 0.5%. This was the fifth consecutive increase, which resulted in accumulated increase of 2.4% from June to October. The quarterly moving average index also showed the continuation of the improvement of working hours in Brazilian industry, after increasing by 0.6% between September and October.

 

Considering the other indicators, figures remained negative: -5.7% compared to October 2008, -6.2% accumulated in the year and -5.4% accumulated in the last twelve months.

 

In the comparison October 09/ October 08, at regional level, most (thirteen) of the fourteen areas surveyed reduced the number of hour paid in production. The main negative contributions to the overall result of -5.7% came from the São Paulo industry, with decrease of 3.4%, of Minas Gerais (-10.3%), and of the North and Central West Region (-9.4%). Only the industry of Ceará (1.9%) increased the number of hours paid in production.

 

Still considering the comparison with October last year, in the country, there were decreases in most (sixteen) of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. With the biggest negative contributions to the overall result of -5.7% were: machinery and equipment (-12.3%), manufacturing of means of transportation (-11.8%) and metal products (-9.7%). There was only increase of working hours in the industry of tobacco  (4.7%) and paper and printing (6.8%).

 

The indicator accumulated in January-October 2009, versus that in the same period in 2008, also showed the overall decrease which reached, in the country, fifteen subsectors and all the areas surveyed. To the formation of the overall rate of -6.2%, the sectors accounting for the main negative contributions were: means of transportation (-11.6%), machinery and equipment (-11.3%), apparel (-8.3%) and metal products  (-9.5%). Industries of paper and printing (6.1%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (1.6%) and non-metallic minerals (0.1%) were the only ones to increase the number of hours paid in production. By area, considering the overall decrease of -6.2% observed in the country, industries of São Paulo (-4.6%),  Minas Gerais (-8.4%) and North and Central West Region (-10.3%), accounted for the main contributions.

 

REAL PAYROLL

 

In October, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers increased 0.5% in relation to the immediately previous month, the second consecutive positive rate, with increase of 2.2% in the period September-October. With these results, the quarterly moving average indicator increased 0.6% between the quarters which ended in September and October, after having increased by 0.4% in September.

 

Compared to similar periods in the previous year, results remained negative: -4.0% in the monthly indicator and -2.7% accumulated in the year. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months decreased from -0.7% in September to -1.4% in October, and has remained on a downward trend since September 2008 (6.7%).

 

In October, real payroll decreased by 4.0% in relation to the same month in the previous year, with negative rates in twelve of the fourteen areas surveyed. The major negative contribution came from São Paulo (-3.3%), due to means of transportation (-9.3%), metal products (-20.4%) and rubber and plastic (-10.1%). It is also worth mentioning Minas Gerais (-10.5%), due to metallurgy (-17.9%) and means of transportation (-16.5%); and Rio Grande do Sul (-7.9%), due to machinery and equipment (-16.4%) and means of transportation (-15.6%). On the other hand, the main positive impact came from Ceará (5.6%), due to the increase of real payroll of footwear and leather article industries (10.6%) and of food products and beverages (8.8%) as well.

 

By subsector, also considering the monthly comparison, the real payroll decreased in thirteen of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. The main negative contributions came from means of transportation (-7.5%), metal products (-15.3%), machinery and equipment (-8.1%) and metallurgy (-15.0%). On the other hand, paper and printing (13.7%), other products from manufacturing industry (5.8%) and textiles (5.8%) accounted for the main positive impacts.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year decreased 2.7%, with reduction of real payroll in tem of the fourteen subsectors surveyed. The main negative contributions came from São Paulo (-2.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-7.5%) and Minas Gerais (-5.6%). In these areas, major decreases occurred, respectively, in means of transportation (-6.1%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (-9.0%); means of transportation (-16.7%) and footwear and leather articles (-10.4%); and metallurgy (-14.2%) and means of transportation (-9.2%). The main positive results, on the other hand, came from the increase of 12.% of the real payroll in mining and quarrying industry and of 8.7% in apparel.

 

In terms of subsector, twelve activities faced the value of real payroll. Means of transportation (-6.1%), machinery and equipment (-6.0%), metallurgy (-11.4%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (-7.0%) accounted for the main negative contributions. On the other hand, the biggest positive contributions came from paper and printing (13.3%) and mining and quarrying industry (10.6%).

 

The indicator had the biggest increase since July 2008, in the month/previous month series (not considering seasonal effects), and has remained positive four the last four months in this type of comparison. There was decrease of 5.7% both in relation to October/08 and in terms of the index accumulated in the year. Hours paid in industry rose 0.5& from September to October 2009 (seasonally adjusted result), but faced decrease in the comparison by month (-5.7%) and in terms of the index accumulated in the year (-6.2%). Real payroll had increase of 0.5% in relation to the immediately previous month (with seasonal adjustment), but remained negative compared to October/08 (-4.0%) and to the index accumulated in the ten months of 2009 (-2.7%).

 

SALARIED EMPLOYED PERSONS 

In October 2009, industrial employment increased 0.7% compared to the figure in the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series; this was the biggest increase since July 2008, and keeps a sequence of positive rates for the last four months, with increase of 1.6% in the period. With these results, the quarterly moving average index, which had had lower rhythm of decrease since last February, presented its third consecutive positive rate: 0.4% in October (versus 0.2% I August and 0.3% in September).

 

Compared to similar periods in 2008, the results remained negative, with decrease of 5.7% both compared to October and to the indicator accumulated in the year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, decreased 4.8% and remained on the downward trend which started in august last year (3.0%).

 

In the comparison October 09/October 08, industrial employment faced reduction by 5.7%, the eleventh consecutive negative rate, with decrease of the number of workers in thirteen areas and sixteen subsectors surveyed. Among the areas, São Paulo (-4.2%), Minas Gerais (-11.3%), North Region and Central West  (-8.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-7.2%) were the main negative contributions. In São Paulo, the most significant negative contributions came from means of transportation (-15.9%), machinery and equipment (-9.9%) and metal products (-12.1%); in the second place, the most relevant impact came from apparel (-29.5%) and food products and beverages (-7.6%); in the third place, the most significant decreases came from wood (-34.3%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (-18.7%); and in the industry from Rio Grande do Sul, the main items were footwear and leather articles (-10.0%), machinery and equipment (-11.3%) and means of transportation (-13,4%).

 

Among the subsectors investigated, in the country, also in this type of comparison, the most relevant negative contributions came from means of transportation (-13.0%), machinery and equipment (-10.5%), metal products (-10.2%), wood (-19.4%) and apparel (-6.7%). On the other hand,  paper and printing (6.9%) and tobacco (5.1%) were the only positive impacts to the overall result.

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in the year, the level of employment in industry was 5.7% lower than in the same period in the previous year, a result based on decreases observed in fourteen areas, mainly in São Paulo (-4.2%), Minas Gerais (-8.7%), North and Central west Region (-9.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-7.5%). Also in this type of comparison, in the country, industrial employment decreased in seventeen of the eighteen subsectors, with the main negative contributions coming from means of transportation (-9.9%), machinery and equipment (-8.9%), apparel (-8.4%) and metal products (-9.4%), whereas the only positive result came from paper o paper and printing (7.0%).

 

In summary, the evolution of industrial employment indexes and of the number of hours paid, in the last few months, reflects the bigger dynamism of production, considering the month/previous month comparison. Also considering the seasonally adjusted series, employed and the number of hours paid increased 0.4% and 0.6% in October in terms of the quarterly moving average, and have remained on an upward trend since the beginning of the year. However, compared to similar periods in the previous year, results remain negative compared to October last year and to the index accumulated in the year.
