Industrial production increases in seven of the 14 surveyed areas, in August

Between July and August of this year, in the seasonally-adjusted series, among the seven areas with production increase, six obtained rates higher than the national average (1.2%): Pernambuco (7.4%), Espírito Santo (6.0%), Bahia (5.7%), Northeast region (3.9%), São Paulo (2.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%). Amazonas also increased production (1.2%), but the industries of Minas Gerais and Paraná presented no growth. Goiás (-6.5%), Pará (-2.8%), Santa Catarina (-1.7%), Ceará (-1.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.9%) recorded decrease.

 

Compared to the same month of last year, August results were negative in 13 of the 14 surveyed places, with Goiás presenting the only positive result (3.2%). Most (8) recorded less intense decreases than the national average (-7.2%): Paraná (-0.9%), Pernambuco (-1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.8%), Amazonas (-3.8%), Northeast region (-4.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.7%), Bahia (-6.1%) and São Paulo (-6.9%). The most drastic decreases were recorded in Minas Gerais (-13.7%), Pará (-11.0%) and Espírito Santo (-10.9%), followed by Santa Catarina (-9.9%) and Ceará (-9.1%).

 

During 2009, national production progressed in a permanent manner. According to the previous month/month index, national industry has been growing since January, accumulating an expansion of 13.5% until August. Eleven of the 14 places also showed a positive balance in the comparison, with Espírito Santo (26.7%) and Minas Gerais (21.3%) experiencing the most vigorous growth, whereas Amazonas (-0.1%), Pará (-1.4%) and Ceará (-1.9%) suffered losses in the same period.

 

The indicator accumulated in January-August, compared to the same period of 2008, demonstrated a production fall in all areas, four retreating in a stronger rhythm than the national average (-12.1%): Espírito Santo (-25.6%), Minas Gerais (-19.6%), Amazonas (-14.1%) and São Paulo (-13.1%), the last one with a more diversified and more influencing industrial structure. The loss of dynamism in those places is related to the reduction of external sales and to the intense production adjustment, especially in the sector of durable goods (automobiles and consumer electronics). The other rates ranged between -2.3% in Goiás and -11.8% in Rio Grande do Sul.

 

AMAZONAS – In August 2009, the industrial production of Amazonas progressed by 1.2% in the comparison with the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, second positive rate, accumulating an increase of 4.9%. The quarterly moving average index increased by 1.2%, keeping the sequence of four positive rates, with accumulated gain of 8.9%.

 

In the comparison August 09/August 08, five of the 11 segments contributed negatively to the reduction of 3.8% in the overall average, highlighting especially transportation equipment (-23.8%) and electronic and communication equipment (-13.1%). Inversely, the main positive impacts came from food products and beverages (18.1%), editing and printing (22.4%), and machinery and equipment (21.8%).

 

The index accumulated in the year was -14.1%, with decrease in six of the 11 surveyed activities. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, on a downward trend since September (8.3%), reached -9.3% in August.

 

PARÁ – In August the industrial production of Pará decreased by 2.8% compared with the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, second consecutive negative rate. Nevertheless, the quarterly moving average index progressed by 1.9%, second consecutive positive rate, accumulating a gain of 2.6% in this period.

 

The index August 09/August 08 presented a reduction of 11.0%, with four of the six surveyed sectors indicating a fall in production. The major negative contribution to the overall average came from mining and quarrying industry (-18.7%), with highlight being the decrease in iron and aluminum ores. The segments wood (-38.9%) and non-metallic minerals (-21.0%) also exerted relative negative pressures. On the other hand, positive results were observed in basic metallurgy, with expansion of 5.0%, and cellulose and paper (8.7%).

 

In the indicator accumulated for January-August, the overall rate of -7.95 reflected the negative performance of most (five) of the six surveyed activities. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, with decrease of 4.3%, has been keeping a downward trend since last November, with loss of 1.8 percentage point in relation to July (-2.5).

 

 

NORTHEAST – In August, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of the Northeast progressed by 3.8% in relation to the previous month, after having recorded a fall of 2.5% in July. The quarterly moving average index grew by 1.4% and accumulated a gain of 2.2% in the last two months.

 

In the comparison with August 2008, Northeastern industry decreased by 4.8% and marked the 11th consecutive negative result. Among the 11 surveyed sectors, nine presented fall in production, with the highlight being chemical products (-10.0%). Next come electric machines, appliances and material (-41.4%), and basic metallurgy (-10.7%). On the other hand, petroleum refining and alcohol production (3.9%) and non-metallic minerals (2.4%) were the positive impacts.

 

In the indicator accumulated in the year, Northeastern production decreased by 8.9%, with all industrial activities showing retreat. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months changed from -6.1% in July to -6.6% in August, and has kept a downward trend (4.4%) since September.

 

CEARÁ – The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Ceará decreased by 1.1% in August in relation to the previous month, after having grown by 0.7%. With those results, the quarterly moving average index decreased by 0.6% and marked the fourth consecutive negative rate, accumulating a loss of 4.0%.

 

In the monthly indicator, the industry of Ceará presented a fall of 9.1%, with negative results in five of the 10 industrial activities, with highlights being food products and beverages (-25.2%) because of the reduced production of toasted cashew nuts and soft drinks. It is worth mentioning the decreases in footwear and leather articles (-7.7%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-16.2%). By contrast, the main positive contributions came from non-metallic minerals (34.6%), chemical products (6.0%) and textiles (2.4%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the year decreased by 7.1%, with negative results in seven of the 10 surveyed segments, the greatest impact being determined by the performance of food products and beverages (-16.0%). The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months changed from -3.2% in July to -4.5% in August, following a downward trend initiated in September 2008 (3.8%).

 

PERNAMBUCO – The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Pernambuco grew by 7.4% in August, after having decreased by 2.5% in the last two months. With those results, the quarterly moving average index progressed by 1.6% in August, after having retreated for two months, accumulating a loss of 1.3%.

 

The industry monthly indicator of Pernambuco pointed out the 10th consecutive negative rate, with fall in five of the 11 surveyed industrial activities. The major negative impact to the -1.3% rate came from metal products (-17.3%). There were also negative contributions from electric machines, appliances and material (-16.5%) and textiles (-31.2%). By contrast, food products and beverages (3.0%) and basic metallurgy (4.1%) expanded production, particularly as a result of the increasing production of beer and draft beer, soft drinks, and carbon steel square bars.

 

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the production of Pernambuco decreased by 7.5%, with negative rates in nine of the 11 surveyed industrial sectors. Chemical products (-11.6%), electric machines, appliances and material (-26.5%) and basic metallurgy (-9.7%) were the main negative influences upon overall average. The annualized rate, indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, changed from -4.2% in July to -4.5% in August, continuing on a downward trend initiated in October 2008 (6.2%).

 

BAHIA – The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Bahia progressed by 5.7% in August in relation to the previous month, after having decreased by 5.5% in July, returning to nearly the same level recorded in June. Still in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index grew by 2.2%, the third consecutive positive rate, accumulating a gain of 5.9% in the period June-August.

 

In the comparison with August 2008, the industrial production of Bahia presented a fall of 6.1%, with negative rates in six of the nine surveyed activities. The main negative contribution came from chemical products (-14.4%). There were also negative influences from basic metallurgy (-15.0%) and rubber and plastic (-16.8%). Conversely, the major positive impacts were created by petroleum refining and alcohol production (3.1%) and non-metallic minerals (8.0%).

 

In the indicator accumulated in the year until August, the industry of Bahia recorded a fall of 9.5%, with negative results in seven of the nine surveyed sectors. The major negative contributions were made by petroleum refining and alcohol production (-22.2%), basic metallurgy (-21.0%) and chemical products (-6.1%). The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months changed from -5.8% in July to -6.9% in August, and continues on a downward trend initiated in September 2008 (5.1%).

 

MINAS GERAIS – In Minas Gerais, industrial production presented stability from July to August (0.0%) in the seasonally adjusted series. It is worth emphasizing that this is the eighth consecutive month in which local industry does not record production decrease in comparison to the previous month, what brings a gain of 21.3% in this period. Thus, quarterly moving average index, with a 1.7% growth between July and August, followed the downward trend initiated in March 2009.

 

Considering August 2008, the reduction in most (11) of the 13 surveyed sectors shows the overall result of -13.7%. It is appropriate to highlight the contributions of mining and quarrying industry (-26.0%) and basic metallurgy (-23.0%). The sectors of food products (3.2%) and cellulose and paper (1.5%) showed positive results.

 

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the fall of 19.6% also reflected a generalized profile of negative results that affected 11 of the 13 surveyed sectors. The annualized rate, accumulated in the last 12 months, on a downward trend since October 2008, recorded a decrease of 15.7% in August.

 

ESPÍRITO SANTO – The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Espírito Santo progressed by 6.0% in August, compared to July, the second consecutive positive rate, accumulating an expansion of 16.1% in this period. As a result, the quarterly moving average index also showed growth (4.5%) between July and August, keeping the downward trend initiated in April.

 

In the comparison with August of last year, the general index decreased by 10.9%, mainly influenced by the fall in mining and quarrying industry (-26.4%), followed by manufacturing industry (-3.1%). In this last segment, negative pressures came from basic metallurgy (-7.4%) and non-metallic minerals (-16.5%). On the other hand, positive rates were determined by the sectors food products and beverages (7.2%) and cellulose and paper (3.6%).

 

The production accumulated in the year dropped by 25.6% compared to January-August of last year, influenced by the fall in all investigated branches, highlighting losses originated from mining and quarrying industry (-45.1%) and basic metallurgy (-30.2%). The annualized rate kept the downward trend initiated in September 2008 (14.1%), reaching a rate of -20.8% in August.

 

RIO DE JANEIRO – The seasonally adjusted industrial production index of Rio de Janeiro decreased by 0.9% in August compared to July, first negative result since last February (-1.5%). In this period the sector accumulated gain of 10.0%. With those results, the quarterly moving average index progressed by 0.9% for the quarters ended in July and August, and kept the downward trend initiated in March.

 

Considering August 2008, the industrial sector of Rio de Janeiro dropped by 2.8%, the 10th consecutive negative rate, explained above all by the negative contribution of manufacturing industry (-5.9%), once mining and quarrying industry (10.0%), due to the increased extraction of petroleum, kept the sequence of positive results initiated in April 2008. In manufacturing industry, where nine of the 12 activities showed fall in production, the main impact on the general average came from automotive vehicles (-23.6%). Food products (-12.8%), non-metallic minerals (-14.4%) and other chemical products (-9.0%) also showed negative results. On the other hand, three branches showed production expansion: pharmaceutical industry (13.6%), beverages (4.5%), and perfumery, soaps and cleaning products (9.3%).

 

In the January-August accumulated indicator, compared with the same period of 2008, the industry of Rio de Janeiro decreased by 7.0%, influenced principally by the fall in nine of the 13 investigated branches. The main negative contribution to the average of industry still comes from basic metallurgy (-24.6%). The annualized rate, decreased by 4.8%, keeps the downward trend initiated in September of last year (3.5%).

 

SÃO PAULO – The industry of São Paulo increased by 2.5% in August compared to July, in the seasonally adjusted series, the second consecutive positive rate, accumulating a gain of 4.4%. The quarterly moving average index (1.1%) has been keeping a positive trend for six months, accumulating a gain of 6.6% in this period.

 

In the monthly index, the reduction of 6.9% may be explained by the negative performance of 11 of the 20 surveyed branches, with machines and equipment (-27.4%), automotive vehicles (-13.9%), electronic material and communication equipment (-36.2%) and basic metallurgy (-25.1%) giving the most relevant contributions to the general rate. On the other hand, pharmaceutical industry (10.6%), other chemical products (5.6%) and food products (3.3%) presented the main positive pressures.

 

The January-August accumulated production dropped by 13.1%, influenced by falls in 14 segments. Machines and equipment (-33.1%), electronic material and communication equipment (-57.2%), automotive vehicles (-20.8%) and basic metallurgy (-33.3%) were the most important negative contributions to the general average of industry. The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, on a downward trend since July 2008, reached -9.2% in August.

 

PARANÁ – The industrial production of Paraná was stable (0.0%) in August compared to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having gown by 17.0% in July. The quarterly moving average index, with an increase of 1.4% between August and July, broke the three-month sequence of negative results, when it accumulated a loss of 7.6%.

 

In the monthly index (-0.9%), eight of the 14 surveyed activities reduced their production compared to August of last year, with the most relevant contribution to the general rate coming from automotive vehicles (-34.1%) and, to a lesser extent, machines and equipment (-10.3%) and wood (-22.8%). The main positive impacts were editing and printing (54.9%), other chemical products, with a growth of 90.9%, influenced by a depressed basis for comparison, and petroleum refining and alcohol production (24.4%).

 

The indicator accumulated in the year was -5.2%, with nine branches negatively influencing the general result. The main contributions came from automotive vehicles (-34.2%), machines and equipment (-20.9%) and wood (-25.1%). The main positive pressure came from editing and printing (78.8%). The index accumulated in the last 12 months, on a downward trend since March of this year, reached -1.9%.

 

SANTA CATARINA – After five consecutive months of expansion, the industry of Santa Catarina recorded fall in production again (-1.7%) in August compared to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average index, in its turn, showed stability in the growth rhythm between July and August (0.0%).

 

In the formation of the -9.9% overall rate observed in the comparison August 09/August 08, eight of the 11 surveyed sectors showed negative results, with highlights being automotive vehicles (-63.3%) and rubber and plastic (-27.4%). Only food industries (2.7%), machines and equipment (0.1%) and electric machines, appliances and material (17.2%) showed positive results.

 

The accumulated indicator was -11.8%, with retreat in most (10) of the 11 surveyed activities. The accumulated in the last 12 months (-9.2%) keeps the downward trend initiated in October 2008.

 

RIO GRANDE DO SUL – The industrial production of Rio Grande do Sul showed, in the seasonally adjusted series, an increase of 1.9% from July to August, third consecutive progress, accumulating an expansion of 4.4% in this period. With those results, the quarterly moving average index kept the upward trend initiated in March, reaching growth of 1.4% between July and August.

 

In the comparison with August 2008, the fall of 5.7% reflects a picture of negative rates in most (10) of the 14 investigated sectors. Among them, it is worth mentioning the influences originated from automotive vehicles (-23.4%), machines and equipment (-16.6%), footwear and leather articles (-19.3%) and metal products (-21.2%). Of the four segments with positive rates, petroleum refining and alcohol production (21.2%) were the ones that most influenced the overall index.

 

The accumulated indicator was -11.8%, with decrease in most (10) of the 14 surveyed activities. The accumulated in the last 12 months (-8.7%) keeps the downward trend initiated in October 2008.

 

GOIÁS – The industrial production of Goiás decreased by 6.5% in August compared to July, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having progressed by 13.9% in the last two months. The quarterly moving average index shows growth of 2.0% between July and August, and continues a sequence of five positive results, with gain of 10.6% in the period.

 

Considering August 2008 (3.2%), three of the five investigated branches showed increase, with highlights being chemical products (26.9%) and, to a lesser extent, basic metallurgy (3.1%) and non-metallic minerals (2.9%). On the other hand, both negative impacts came from food products and beverages (-0.8%) and mining and quarrying industry (-0.9%).

 

In the index accumulated in the year, the general rate of industry was negative (-2.3%), with three segments reducing production. In this comparison, negative pressures were exerted by food products and beverages (-4.1%), basic metallurgy (-4.8%) and non-metallic minerals (-2.7%). The annualized rate, accumulated indicator in the last 12 months, on a downward trend since August of last year, reached -0.8% this August.
