Unemployment rate was 8.1% in August

The unemployment rate was statistically stable in relation to July (8.0%) and increased by 0.5 percentage point in relation to August 2008 (7.6%). The unemployed population (1.9 million) was stable in relation to July and increased by 7.8% compared to August 2008. The employed population (21.4 million) was stable in the monthly and annual comparisons. The number of workers with a formal contract (9.6 million) did not change regarding July and increased by 2.8% compared to August 2008. The number of employed persons in Mining and quarrying industry, and distribution of electricity, gas and water increased by 3.9% in relation to July. In the year, there was decrease (-3.4%) in this same group, and increase of 3.9% in Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security. The real income usually earned of employed persons (R$ 1,336.80) increased by 0.9% in the month and 2.2% compared to August 2008.

The volume of real income (R$ 28.5 billion) of the employed population rose by 1.3% in the month and 2.4% in the year.

 

In August 2009, the unemployment rate was 8.1% for the group of six regions covered by the Monthly Employment Survey (PME), with stability in relation to July (8.0%). Regarding August 2008 (7.6%), the rate climbed by 0.5 percentage point.

 

UNEMPLOYED PERSONS (PD)1

 

In the comparison with July 2009, there was stability in the number of unemployed persons among all six surveyed regions. By comparison with August of last year, there was a rise of 7.8%.

In relation to July, there were rises in Belo Horizonte (24.4%) and fall (-9.9%) in Rio de Janeiro. In the year, there were rises in Recife (37.4%), Belo Horizonte (25.8%) and São Paulo (14.9%), and fall (-18.6%) in Rio de Janeiro.

EMPLOYED PERSONS (PO)

The number of employed persons (21.4 million) in the group of six Metropolitan Areas was stable in relation to last July and to August 2008. In Rio de Janeiro, the estimated population grew by 1.4% in the monthly comparison. In relation to August 2008, there was rise only in Salvador (3.6%).

 

Groups of activity:

 

Mining and quarrying industry, and distribution of electricity, gas and water (16.8% of PO). Rise of 3.9% in the comparison with July, and fall (-3.4%) in the comparison with August of last year. Regionally, in the monthly comparison, there was a rise in São Paulo (5.8%). In the year, there was a fall (-6.6%) in Belo Horizonte.

 

Construction (7.3% of PO). Stability in both periods of comparison. In the analysis by region, in relation to last July, there was a drop (-8.1%) in Rio de Janeiro. In the year, there was stability.

 

Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects, and retail trade of fuels (18.8% of PO). Stability in both comparisons. In the analysis by region, fall in relation to July in São Paulo, and rise of 6.4% in Porto Alegre. Stability in the year.

 

Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities, and financial mediation (15.6% of PO). Stability in both examined periods. In the analysis by region, there was no change in the monthly comparison. In the comparison with August 2008, there was a rise of 13.1% in Salvador.

 

Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (16.4% of PO). Stability in the month and rise of 3.9% in the year. In the analysis by region, stability in both examined periods.

 

Domestic services (7.8% of PO). Stability in both examined periods and in the analysis by region.

 

Other services (lodging and feeding; transportation; storage and communications; urban cleaning; associate, recreational, cultural and sports activities; personal services) (16.7% of PO). Stability in both examined periods and in the analysis by region.

 

Type of participation of workers in the job market:

 

Workers WITH a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military and civil servants and others) (44.5% of PO). Stability in the month and rise of 2.8% in the year. In the analysis by region, stability in the month. In relation to August 2008, rise of 7.7% in Salvador.

 

Workers WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military and civil servants and others) (12.6% of PO). Stability in the month and fall (-8.6%) in the year. In the analysis by region, stability in the month. In relation to August of last year, falls in Belo Horizonte (-10.7%), Rio de Janeiro (-10.0%) and Porto Alegre (-20.8%).

 

Military or civil servants (8.0% of PO). Rise of 6.7% in the month and stability in comparison to August 2008. Regionally, rises in Rio de Janeiro (8.2%) and São Paulo (12.1%) in the monthly comparison. In relation to August of last year, rise of 16.5% in Salvador.

 

Own-account workers (18.8% of PO). Stability in both periods of comparison. Regionally, in the monthly comparison, rise of 6.4% in Porto Alegre. In the year, stability in all regions.

 

AVERAGE REAL INCOME2

 

For the group of six areas, the average real income usually earned by workers (R$ 1,336.80) had a rise of 0.9% in relation to July and 2.2% in relation to August 2008.

In relation to the previous month, there were income rises in Belo Horizonte (1.6%), Rio de Janeiro (1.2%), São Paulo (1.3%) and Porto Alegre (0.4%). There were falls in Recife (-0.7%) and Salvador (-1.9%). In the annual comparison, there were rises in five metropolitan areas: Recife (0.5%), Salvador (5.6%), Belo Horizonte (6.8%), São Paulo (1.4%) and Porto Alegre (6.1%). In Rio de Janeiro, stability.

Income of categories of participation in the job market:

Workers WITH a formal contract in the private sector (R$ 1,259.10). Fall (-0.7%) in the month. Stability in the year.

In the month, rises in Recife (0.4%), Salvador (1.3%) and Belo Horizonte (1.2%); and falls in Rio de Janeiro (-1.1%), São Paulo (-1.0%) and Porto Alegre (-2.0%).

 

In the year, there were rises in Recife (3.5%), Salvador (2.6%), Belo Horizonte (6.0%) and Porto Alegre (1.4%). Falls in Rio de Janeiro (-2.3%) and São Paulo (-1.1%).

 

Workers WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (R$ 910.70). Rise of 4.7% in the month and 3.8% in the year.

In the month, there were rises in Recife (0.6%), Belo Horizonte (6.5%), Rio de Janeiro (1.0%), São Paulo (6.2%) and Porto Alegre (6.3%); and stability in Salvador.

 

In the year, there were falls in Recife (-6.3%), Belo Horizonte (-1.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (-14.5%); and rises in Salvador (0.6%), São Paulo (11.1%) and Porto Alegre (13.4%).

 

Military or civil servants (R$ 2,380.00). Rise of 0.8% in the month and 5.3% in the year.

 

In the month, rises in Recife (1.8%), Salvador (8.0%), Belo Horizonte (2.6%) and Porto Alegre (1.1%); fall in São Paulo (-1.3%); and stability in Rio de Janeiro.

 

In the year, rises in Recife (3.7%), Salvador (9.9%), Belo Horizonte (6.9%), Rio de Janeiro (6.5%) and Porto Alegre (14.2%); and fall in São Paulo (-0.8%).

 

Own-account workers (R$ 1,122.10). Stability in the month and rise of 1.1% in the year.

 

In the month there were falls in Salvador (-8.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.5%) and Porto Alegre (-3.7%); rises in Belo Horizonte (1.3%) and São Paulo (3.3%); and stability in Recife.

 

In the year there were rises in Belo Horizonte (9.9%), São Paulo (1.3%) and Porto Alegre (1.1%); falls in Recife (3.0%) and Salvador (2.9%); and stability in Rio de Janeiro.

 

AVERAGE REAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME PER CAPITA

 

In August 2009, for the group of six areas, the average real household income per capita (R$ 870.98) exhibited a rise of 1.4% in comparison to last July, and 2.3% in relation to August 2008.

 

In the month, there were rises in Salvador (1.1%), Rio de Janeiro (2.3%), São Paulo (1.7%) and Porto Alegre (0.8%). There was fall in Recife (-1.8%) and stability in Belo Horizonte. In the year, rises in all metropolitan areas: Recife (1.4%), Salvador (11.5%), Belo Horizonte (3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (1.9%), São Paulo (0.9%) and Porto Alegre (5.2%).

 

VOLUME OF REAL INCOME USUALLY EARNED BY THE EMPLOYED POPULATION

 

For July 2009 (according to August PME), the volume of real income of the employed population (R$ 28.5 billion) increased by 1.3% in relation to June, and 2.4% in comparison with July 2008.

 

In the monthly comparison, there were rises in Salvador (0.4%), Belo Horizonte (1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (2.2%), São Paulo (1.0%) and Porto Alegre (1.4%); and fall in Recife (-1.4%). In the year there were rises in Recife (0.5%), Salvador (12.1%), Belo Horizonte (6.6%), São Paulo (1.7%) and Porto Alegre (5.5%); and fall (-1.3%) in Rio de Janeiro.
