In July, industrial employment changed by 0.4%

It was the first positive rate in nine months with falling rates, in the month/immediately previous month comparison (seasonally adjusted series) and with -7.3% accumulated in the period. In longer comparisons, there were worse results:  -7.0% compared to July/08 and -5.4% accumulated in the year. The number of hours paid remained stable in July (0.0%) compared to the figure in June/09 (seasonally adjusted series). In terms of this indicator, there were also decreases in relation to the same month in the previous year and accumulated in the year (-7.6% and -6.1%, respectively). Real payroll changed by 0.1% in relation to June/09, not considering the seasonally adjusted series. Compared to the same month in the previous year, the index accumulated in the year had negative results (-3.9% and -1.6%, respectively).

 

SALARIED EMPLOYED PERSONS

In July, industrial employment changed by 0.4% in relation to June/09, in the seasonally adjusted series, interrupting a sequence of nine negative results. The quarterly moving average index, which had been on a downward trend, but lower rhythm of decrease since last February, remained practically stable (-0.1%) in July.  

 

Compared to similar periods in 2008, results remained negative: in relation to July, there was increase of 7.0%, the most significant decrease in the time series, which started in 2001; the rate accumulated in the first seven months of the year was -5.4%. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, remained on a downward trend (-2.7%), having had worse rhythm of decrease compared to that of June (-1.9%).

 

Compared to July 2008 (-7.0%), the number of hours paid decreased in the fourteen areas surveyed, being the highlight São Paulo (-5.2%), Minas Gerais (-12.2%), North and Central West Region (-10.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-9.1%). In the first place, the main negative contributions came from means of transportation (-14.7%) and machinery and equipment (-11.6%); in the second, apparel (-27.3%) and food products and beverages (-5.9%) were the most significant contributions; in the third, the highlights were wood (-30.6%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (-24.2%); and, in the industry of Rio Grande do Sul, footwear and leather articles  (-15.6%) and machinery and equipment (-14.0%).

 

Also compared to July 2008, in the country, industrial employment decreased in seventeen of the eighteen subsectors surveyed, such as means of transportation  (-12.9%), machinery and equipment (-12.3%), metal products (-11.7%) and apparel (-8.7%) as the main negative contributions to the overall result. On the other hand, paper and printing (8.6%) was the only positive result.

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in the year, the number of persons employed in industry was 5.4% lower than in the same period in the previous year, a result base don decreases observed in fourteen areas and fifteen subsectors. Among the areas, the main negative contributions came from São Paulo (-4.1%), Minas Gerais (-7.5%), North and Central west Region (-8.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-7.1%). Among the subsectors, the main negative contributions came from apparel (-9.1%), means of transportation (-8.4%), machinery and equipment (-7.7%) and footwear and leather articles (-10.7%). On the other hand, there were increases in the following items: paper and printing (6.9%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (0.6%) and non-metallic minerals (0.1%).

 

In summary, industrial employment had, in the month/previous month comparison, its first positive rate (0.4%), after a sequence of nine negative results, accumulating -7.3% from October /08 to June/ 09. As a result, the quarterly moving average index, which shows deceleration in the rhythm of decrease in the last five months, practically repeated the same level as in the previous (-0.1%), accounting for the biggest dynamism of industrial production lately. However, comparisons which involve longer periods show increase of a trend to decrease, once the indexes accumulated in the month and in the last twelve month, worsened the negative rhythm, showing an upward basis of comparison in the same period of 2008.

 

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

 

In July, not considering the seasonal effects, the number of hours paid to industry workers was stable (0.0%) in relation to the previous month, after having presented increase of 0.6% in June. As a result, the quarterly moving average indicator changed by -0.2% between June and July, having the tenth consecutive negative result, and accumulating decrease of 7.7%.

 

Compared to the same period in the previous year, results remained negative: -7.6% in the monthly comparison and -6.1% accumulated in the year. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months decreased 3.2%, after having fallen 2.4% in June, and has remained on a downward trend since September 2008 (2.7%).

 

The number of hours paid decreased 7.6% in July, compared to the same month in the previous year, with negative rates reaching the fourteen areas surveyed. The main negative contribution came from São Paulo (-6.1%), due to means of transportation (-16.8%), machinery and equipment (-15.3%) and rubber and plastic (-13.8%). It is also worth mentioning Minas Gerais (-11.5%), due to apparel (-28.4%), metallurgy (-20.5%) and textiles (-23.8%); North and Central West Region (-12.5%), due to wood (-33.5%), electronic machines and communication equipment (-27.9%) and food products and beverages (-3.2%); and Rio Grande do Sul (-10.7%), due to the lower number of hours paid for footwear and leather articles  (-16.4%), machinery and equipment (-18.4%) and means of transportation (-19.9%).

 

By subsector, also considering the monthly indicator, the number of hours paid decreased in seventeen of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. The main negative contributions came from means of transportation (-14.7%), machinery and equipment (-14.6%), metal products (-11.9%) and rubber and plastic (-13.1%). On the other hand, paper and printing (6.7%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (0.8%) were the only subsectors with increase.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year faced decrease (-6.1%), with reduction in all the areas surveyed. The main negative contributions came from São Paulo (-4.8%), North and Central West Region (-9.9%), Minas Gerais (-7.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-9.1%). In these areas, the main decreases occurred in means of transportation (-11.2%) and machinery and equipment (-11.0%); wood (-27.9%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (-22.3%); apparel (-15.6%) and means of transportation (-13.0%); and footwear and leather articles (-14.9%) and machinery and equipment (-10.3%).

 

Fifteen subsectors faced reduction of the number of hours paid in industry. Means of transportation (-11.0%), machinery and equipment (-10.3%), apparel (-9.0%) and rubber and plastic (-11.0%) were the main negative highlights. On the other hand, the main positive impacts came from paper and printing (6.2%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (3.6%).

 

REAL PAYROLL

 

In July 2009, the real payroll of industry (seasonally adjusted series) changed by 0.1% in relation to the figure in June, after decreasing by 1.7% in the previous month. The quarterly moving average index was practically stable in July (0.1%), after eight consecutive months with decrease, a period in which it accumulated decrease of 5.5%.

 

Compared to similar periods in 2008, the total payroll presented negative results in the quarterly index (-3.9%) and in the index accumulated in the year (-1.6%). The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months has faced reduction of increase since September last year (6.7%), having reached 1.5% in July 2009.

 

Compared to July last year, payroll decreased 3.9%, with reduction in eleven of the fourteen areas surveyed. The main negative contributions came from São Paulo (-3.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (-10.4%) and Minas Gerais (-7.2%). In São Paulo, the main negative results were those of transportation material (-7.5%) and machinery and equipment (-11.8%). In Rio Grande do Sul, the main decreases occurred in means of transportation (-31.1%), machinery and equipment (-14.8%) and footwear and leather articles (-11.9%).

 

In the analysis by industrial activity, real payroll, also compared to the same month in the previous year, decreased in eleven of the eighteen subsectors surveyed, and the highlights were means of transportation (-8.6%) and machinery and equipment (10.5%). On the other hand, paper and printing (16.5%) was the main positive highlight.

 

Considering the index accumulated in the year, the performance of real payroll was also negative, with decrease of 1.6% in relation to the same period last year. There was decrease in thirteen subsectors, and the main negative contributions came from means of transportation (-5.1%), machinery and equipment (-4.8%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (-7.6%). In terms of positive results, the highlight was mining and quarrying industry (20.2%) and paper and printing (12.3%). In the analysis by area, São Paulo (-2.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-6.7%) and Minas Gerais (-3.5%) accounted for the main negative highlights, opposite to the results of (3.9%) and Espírito Santo (8.5%).
