Unemployment rate was 8.0% in July

The unemployment rate was  statistically stable in relation to last June (8.1%) and to July 2008 (8.1%). The number of unemployed persons (1.9 million) was stable in the monthly and annual comparisons. The employed population (21.3 million) increased 0.9% in relation to last June and 1.1% in relation to July 2008. Among the groups of activity, there was decrease (- 4.7%) in Mining and quarrying industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water, in relation to July 2008.

The number of workers with a formal contract (9.6 million) increased 1.5% in relation to June and 4.2% in relation to July 2008. The real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 1,323.30) increased 0.5% in the monthly comparison and 3.4% in the year. The volume of real income of the employed population (R$ 28.2 billion) rose by 0.9% in relation to last May and changed by 4.3% in relation to June 2008. The household income per capita was stable in relation to June and rose by 2.5% in relation to the figure in July 2008. 

In July 2009, the unemployment rate was estimated as 8.0% for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed. There was stability in relation to last June (8.1%) and also to July last year (8.1%). 

 UNEMPLOYED PERSONS (PD)

The number of persons unemployed in the group of six metropolitan areas remained stable both in the monthly and in the annual analysis.

 

In the analysis by region, there was decrease (-11.3%) in relation to the previous month in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte. In relation to July 2008, there was decrease (-15.2%) in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro.

 

EMPLOYED PERSONS (PO)

The employed population (21.3 million) increased 0.9% compared to June and 1.1% compared to July 2008. There was increase in the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (1.3%) in the monthly comparison. In relation to July 2008, there were increases in the Metropolitan Areas of Salvador (3.6%) and Belo Horizonte (2.1%).  

 

Analysis of results in relation to the main groups of activity

 

Mining and quarrying industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (16.3% of the employed population). There was no change in relation to June. Compared to July last year, there was decrease (-4.7%).

 

In the analysis by area, in the monthly comparison, there was increase of 4.8% in Porto Alegre. Compared to July 2008, there were decreases in Belo Horizonte (-6.1%) and Porto Alegre (-7.3%).

 

Construction (7.4% of the employed population) There was stability in both periods analyzed, even in the analysis by area. Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels

In the analysis by area, there were no changes in relation to June. Compared to July 2008, there was increase of 6.9% in Belo Horizonte and decrease (-7.3%) in Porto Alegre.

 

Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and retail trade of fuels (15.3% of the PO). There was stability in both comparisons. In the analysis by area, the Metropolitan Area of Salvador was the only one to present increase, by 10.2% in the monthly comparison and 11.2% in relation to July 2008.

 

Education, health, social services, general government and social security (16.3% of the employed population). There were no changes in either comparison. The rate of Salvador changed by 6.2% in relation to the figure of last June. Compared to July 2008, there was stability in the areas.

 

Domestic services (7.8% of the employed population PO). There was stability in both period analyzed. São Paulo had increase of 7.2% in the monthly comparison. In the annual comparison, there was stability.

 

Other services (lodging, feeding transportation, storage and communications, urban cleaning, associate, recreational and sports activities and personal services) (17.1% of the employed population). There was stability in both periods, even in the analysis by area.

 

Analysis of the type of participation of workers in the job market

 

Workers WITH a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military and civil servants and others) (45.1% of the employed population). There was increase of 1.5% in the monthly comparison and of 4.2% in relation to July 2008. There was increase in São Paulo (2.5%) in the month. Compared to July 2008, there were increases in Recife (9.1%), Salvador (8.2%), Belo Horizonte (4.0%) and São Paulo (3.9%).

 

Workers WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military and civil servants and others) (12.6% of the employed population) There was stability in the monthly comparison and decrease (-7.8%) in the annual comparison. There was stability in the month and decreases in Recife (-19.5%) and Porto Alegre (-15.0%), in relation to July last year.

 

Military or civil servants (7.5% of the employed population). There was stability.

 

Own-account workers (18.7% of the employed population). Estabilidade.

 

AVERAGE REAL INCOME1

 

In July 2009, the real average income usually earned by workers (R$ 1,323.30) e increased in the group of six metropolitan areas.

 

In relation to the previous month, there was increase in Recife (5.1%), Salvador (3.3%), Rio de Janeiro (4.2%) and Porto Alegre (1.7%), and decrease in Belo Horizonte (-1.6%) and São Paulo (-1.9%). In the year, there was increase in all the six areas: Recife (3.6%), Salvador (7.0%), Belo Horizonte (5.7%), Rio de Janeiro (2.6%), São Paulo (2.0%) and Porto Alegre (7.8%).

AVERAGE REAL HOUSEHOLD INCOMEPER CAPITA

 

In July 2009, the average real household income per capita (R$ 858.04) was stable compared to June and increased 2.5% compared to the figure in July 2008. In relation to June, there was increase in Recife (6.7%), Salvador (7.1%), Rio de Janeiro (5.3%) and Porto Alegre (2.0%),  and decrease in Belo Horizonte (-2.6%) and São Paulo (-4.2%). In the year, there was increase in six areas: Recife (6.1%), Salvador (7.7%), Belo Horizonte (4.5%), Rio de Janeiro (0.6%), São Paulo (1.6%) and Porto Alegre (6.1%). 

VOLUME OF REAL INCOME USUALLY EARNED BY THE EMPLOYED POPULATION

 

The volume of real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 28.2 billion) according to the July 2009 edition of PME (reference month: June 2009) increased by 0.9% in relation to last May and by 4.3% in relation to June 2008. Compared to last May, there were increases in Recife (5.1%), Salvador (2.6%), Rio de Janeiro (4.0%) and Porto Alegre (3.2%) and decrease in São Paulo (-1.6%). In Belo Horizonte there was stability. In relation to June last year, there were hikes in the six metropolitan areas: Recife (3.9%), Salvador (9.8%), Belo Horizonte (8.0%), Rio de Janeiro (1.7%), São Paulo (4.0%) and Porto Alegre (5.4%).
