The reduction of industrial activity at national level, in the end of the first semester of 2009 (-13.4%), affected the 14 areas surveyed by IBGE, among which there were five with decreases above the national average, when compared to results in the first six months of 2008.The major decrease occurred in Espírito Santo (-29.3%), followed by Minas Gerais (-21.3%), Amazonas (-16.8%), São Paulo (-14.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-13.5%). Figures reflect the reduced dynamism of exports of sectors which produce durable consumer goods (cars, cell phones, household appliances) and capital goods, versus a high comparison basis in June 2008, when the national industry had 6.35 of increase. Other negative results occurred in Santa Catarina   (-12.9%), Bahia (-10.2%), Northeast Region (-9.7%), Pernambuco (-8.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-8.5%), Pará (-7.6), Ceará (-6.8%), Paraná (-5.9%) and Goiás (-4.6%).

In the analysis by quarter, all the areas had negative rates when results in the second quarter of 2009 were compared to those in the same period of 2008. At national level, there was reduction in the intensity of decrease from the first to the second quarter of 2009 (-14.6% versus -12.3%). Ten of the fourteen areas surveyed had similar occurrences between these two periods: Rio Grande do Sul (from -16.8% to -10.5%), Rio de Janeiro (from -11.4% to -5.6%), Minas Gerais (from -24.2 to -18.7%) and Amazonas (from -19.4% to -14.2%), with major increase, whereas Paraná (from -0.9% to -10.5%) was the area with the most significant decrease.
