IPCA was 0.36% in June

The National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of June changed by 0.36% and was below the May rate (0.47%). Considering the June result, the first semester of the year had index of 2.57%, being lower than the rate relative to the same period in 2008 (3.64%). Considering the last twelve months, the result was 4.80%, also lower than the figure in the immediately previous twelve months (5.20%). In June 2008, the rate was 0.74%.

In spite of the rise of food products, which changed from 0.44%, in May, to 0.70% in June, IPCA in June faced deceleration due to the fall of prices of some goods relevant in terms of family consumption, as shown below:

Pasteurized milk kept on affecting the result, changing from 9.77% in May, to 12.10% in June, and was the most significant contribution to IPCA in the month: 0.14 percentage points. The rise affected the prices of dairy products, which had increases as follows: cheese (1.72%), buttermilk (3.57%) and powdered milk (1.48%).

The group non-food products, responsible for the IPCA deceleration, faced decrease in the July result (change of 0.26%) compared to the figure in May (0.48%). From one month to the other, the group housing had its result reduced from 0.72% (May) to 0.27% (June), due to the lower incidence of readjustments of water and sewage fares (from 1.34% to 0.09%), residential rents (from 0.78% to 0.52%) and electricity (from 0.82% to -0.48%). In the group Health and personal care, the result of 0.49% was lower than that of the previous month (0.68%), mainly due to medicines, which changed from 1.33% to 0.37%.

 

Personal expenses fell from 1.57%, in May, to 0.49% in June. This result was affected by the fall of cigarette prices (from 9.21%, in May, to – 0.28% in June), caused by the reduction of prices of some specific brands. The group was also influenced by the item domestic workers, which changed from 1.35%, in May, to 0.80% in June. In the same comparison, the articles of apparel, in a period of off-prices, changed from 1.16% to 0.53%.

  

Among the indexes by area, Curitiba, where the rates of food products (1.01%), gasoline (4.35%) and alcohol (7.47%) increased, had the highest result in the month: 0.83%. The lowest one was that of the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte (0.06%).

 

To calculate the monthly index, prices collected from May 30 to June 29 (reference) were compared to those charged between April 29 and May 29 (base).IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monthly income ranging from one to forty minimum wages, from whatever source. IPCA encompasses nine metropolitan areas in the country, besides the municipality of Goiânia, and Brasília.

 

In June, INPC was 0.42%

 

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) changed by 0.42% in June, being below the result of 0.60% of May. In the first quarter, INPC was 2.75%, being below that of the same period in the previous year (4.26%). Considering the last twelve months, with 4.94%, the result was lower than the rate equivalent to the immediately previous twelve months (5.45%). In June 2008, INPC was 0.91%.

 

To calculate the monthly index, prices collected from May 30 to June 29 (reference) were compared to those charged between April 29 and May 29 (base). INPC has been calculated by IBGE since 1979. It refers to families with monthly income ranging from one to six minimum wages, with a salaried head of household. IPNC encompasses nine metropolitan areas in the country, besides the municipality of Goiânia, and Brasília.

 

Among the indexes by area, the highest one was obtained in Fortaleza (0.99%). The lowest indexes were those of Brasília and Belém (both with 0.12%).
