In 2007, the 34,216 industrial companies which area part of the Annual Survey of Industry – Product – had volume of sales of R$ 1.2 trillion, which accounted for 89.2% of all the Brazilian industry. The survey presents information about 43 thousand industrial plants of companieswith 30 persons employed and over and value of sales figures of about 3,200 items. The sales of the main 100 products reached R$ 633 billion, which meant 50.9% of the total sales. The São Paulo industry remained as the leader, having accounted for 41.2% of the sales of companies with 30 persons employed and over. Also important in this respect were: Minas Gerais (11.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.3%), Paraná (7.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (7.0%). Diesel also had the highest value of sales (R$ 44.0 billion),followed by processed iron ore (R$ 27,9 billion) and automobiles with engines ranging from 1500 to 3000 cc (R$ 27,0 billion).

Most of the sales of diesel (about 64%) occurred in the states of São Paulo, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul; about 80% of the sales of iron ore, in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo; and about 85% of the sales of automobiles with engines ranging from 1500 to 3000 cc, in São Paulo and Paraná.

Intermediate goods held 58.5% of the sales of products by category of use

The sales of the main 100 products reached, in 2007, R$ 633 billion, which represented 50.9% of the total industry sales of companies with 30 or more workers (in 2005 these made up 50.2%). The aggregation of these products by category of use confirmed, once more, the leadership of intermediate goods, which held 58.5% of the sales of this group. Such goods include the production of items which are turned into or used in the manufacturing of other items and which are thoroughly consumed in the production process (raw material, inputs, and components).

In 2007, considering data about all the surveys, intermediate goods also remained in the leadership of the ranking of all the categories of use, accounting for over half of the total sales of industry in Brazil (56.9%). However, there was reduction of participation in relation to 2005 when sales reached 58.1% of the total.

Most sales of the subsector of intermediate goods were concentrated in the state of São Paulo (38.4%), followed by Minas Gerais (12.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (7.7%). In the analysis by product, the highlights were diesel, with 3.5% of the total sales of industry; processed iron ore (2.2%); and crude petroleum oil (1.5%).

The industry of semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods, with participation of 20.9% in sales, was in the second position in the ranking. This group is basically formed by families, with immediate consumption of food products, cleaning products, apparel and medicines. By area, the most significant sales occurred in São Paulo (43.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.8%), Paraná (7.4%) and Minas Gerais (7.3%). In terms of semi-durable consumer goods, the highlights were: women’s leather footwear, sneakers and mattresses; in terms of non-durable goods, fuels (gasoline and alcohol) and beer or draft beer.

The field of capital goods was the only one to have improvement between 2005 (7.7%) and 2007 (9.0%) in industrial sales among the categories of use. In this group are machinery and equipment, whose production pace is related to investments made by several sectors of the economy. The main highlight in sales of capital goods is still São Paulo, which accounted for 53.5% of the sales of this segment, in spite of presenting the major loss in participation at regional level between the two years (in 2005 it had 56.8% of sales). In second and third positions were Rio Grande do Sul (11.0%) and Minas Gerais (9.9%), the state which had major increase in participation in total sales from one year to the other (3.6 percentage points), and whose main item in this category  was vehicles for transportation of goods. In the analysis by products, the main highlights were heavy trucks, airplanes and tractors.

The subsector of durable consumer goods kept its level of participation in the sales of Brazilian industry (8.8% in both years analyzed). Such goods are predominantly directed to families, and their consumption occurs at longer intervals, as it is the case of automobiles, electronic appliances and cell phones. São Paulo industry remained as the leader of this subsector and increased its participation between 2005 (37.5%) and 2007 (40.3%). Amazonas featured in second (21.4%) and Minas Gerais in third position (11.0%) concerning participation in the sales of this sector. At product level, passenger automobiles and cell phones represented 64% of sales.
