The production value of tourism activities (ACTs) reached R$ 149.64 billion, that is, 7.1% of the production value of the Services sector and 3.6% of Brazilian economy. However, between 2003 and 2006 the participation of such activities in the Brazilian economy decreased from 3.80% to 3.62%. In 2006, 5.7 million persons were employed in tourism activities, corresponding to 10.1% of all the population employed in the Services sector (56.6 million) and 6.1% of the employed population of the country (92.2 million). In 2006, the total income paid by tourism activities (R$ 31.34 billion) made up 3.23% of all the amount paid in the Brazilian economy, being below the figure reached in 2003 (3.30%).

The study Tourism Economics: a macroeconomic perspective 2003-2006 results from a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Tourism and IBGE. This edition presents a review compared to the study released in 2008, Tourism Economics: a macroeconomic perspective 2000 - 2005 and brings more precise definitions of the activities related to Tourism, at four-digit level of the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE). This allowed the exclusion of some economic activities which are not related to Tourism, such as private food services (cafeterias) and also, cargo transportation, urban public transportation and rental of personal property, among others.

Besides, through the System of national Accounts, it was possible to obtain more detailed information about some economic activities. This fact has made it possible, for example, to identify the most specific part of water and air transport which is the transportation of passengers.

In 2006, value generated by activities related to tourism reached R$ 149.64 billion

In 2006, the production value generated by tourism activities was R$ 149.64 billion. This represents 7.1% do of the total production value of the Services sector and 3.6% of the Brazilian economy.

The activity food services accounted for the biggest participation in the production value of ACTs, 40.94%, or R$ 61.28 billion. Other highlights were road transportation, with R$ 26.42 billion or 17.67% of the production value generated by ACTs. Recreational, cultural and sports activities generated R$ 20.68 billion and made up 13.82% of the ACTs.

In 2006, the aggregated value generated by ACTs was R$ 73.87 billion. It corresponded to 5.5% of the aggregated value of the services sector and 3.6% of the Brazilian economy. The main levels of participation came from food services (36.36% or R$ 26.86 billion) and road transportation (19.27% or r$ 14.23 billion). Recreational, cultural and sports activities accounted for 18.06% (R$ 13.34 billion) and auxiliary services to transportation, for 8.77% (R$ 6.48 billion) of the aggregated value of ACTs.

The heterogeneous nature of ACTs can also be observed in terms of the ration between intermediate consumption and production value. Intermediate consumption corresponds to goods and services consumed in a production process. The value of intermediate consumption is affected by price and quantity of inputs used in the production process. ACTs consumed, in an intermediate way, R$ 75.77 billion in gods and services of the Brazilian economy.

In 2006, air transport had the highest intermediate consumption/production value ratio among the activities belonging to ACT (0.71). With a ratio above average of ACTs (0.51) there are also food services and railroad transportation, with 0.56 and 0.53, respectively.

Over 5.7 million persons were employed in tourism activities

In 2006, ACTs employed 5,714,669 persons, or 10.1% of the Services sector (56,619,241) and 6.1% of the total employed in the country (92,246,963). Food services led the ranking with 2,857,677 persons, or 50.01% of the total of ACTs. It is also worth mentioning road transportation services (1,079,351 workers or 18.89%) and recreational, cultural and sports activities (1,013,987 persons or 17.74%).

In 2006, ACTs paid R$ 31.34 billion in salaries and other compensation, or 4.6% of the total of Services sector and 3.2% of the Brazilian economy. The major participation in this item was that of Food services: 28.8% or R$ 9.02 billion, followed by recreational, cultural and sports activities (17.7% or R$ 5.55 billion) and by railroad transportation services (R$ 4.97 billion or 15.9%).

In 2006, ACTs paid average annual income (including the 13th salary) of R$ 5,484 per workers. The highest figures for average annual income were found in air transport (R$ 68,406), water transport (R$ 36,069) and railroad transportation (R$ 33,265), and the lowest ones in the services of road transportation (R$ 4,608) and food services (R$ 3,158).

Participation of Production Value of ACTs in economy decreased between 2003 and 2006

In 2006, the production value of ACTs, at current prices, amounted to R$ 149.64 billion, and the participation of this indicator in the Brazilian economy decreased to 3.62% in 2006, versus 3.80% in 2003.

In 2006, ACTs reached value of production at current prices of R$ 149,642 million, pointing to increase of 11.5% in relation to 2005. This result was above the one relative to the Brazilian economy, which changed by 8.8%. So, in the period, the participation of the ACT group in the Brazilian economy increased from 3.54% in 2005 to 3.62% in 2006.

The highlights in 2006, with reference to the positive change in the value of production compared to 2005 were: rental of personal property (21.2%), food services (21.1%), water transport (16.2%), railroad transportation (14.4%) and auxiliary transportation activities (12.3%). The performance of ACTs as a whole was very significant, except for the decrease of production value in the subsectors of air transport (-9.2%) and auxiliary transportation services (-7.2%).

From 2003 to 2006, participation of value added of ACTs in economy increased

In 2006, tourism activities had total value added of R$ 73.87 billion, at current prices. From 2003 to 2005, the participation of the sector in the Brazilian economy increased from 3.61% to 3.63%.

From 2005 to 2006, the participation of ACTs in economy increased from 3.58% to 3.63%. The activities which most contributed to this performance were railroad transportation (29.8% of the ACTs in 2006), food services (25.5%), rental of personal property (23.4%), water transport (34.3%) and auxiliary transportation activities (12.0%). Air transport fell by 4.2%.

From 2003 to 2006, the number of persons employed in ACTs changed from 5.3 to 5.7 million

ACTs, in 2003, employed 5,355,784 persons, with 6.4% of participation in the total Brazilian economy. In 2006, although participation was 0.3 percentage points lower (6.1%), the number of persons employed increased by 6.7%, amounting to 5,714,669 workers

Employment in ACTs increased 6.1% throughout the series, being significantly above employment relative to the Brazilian economy (2.6%). In 2006, employment increased in all the activities of the Services sector. The most significant contributions came from food services (6.0%), recreational, cultural and sports activities (13.4%) and road transportation (1.4%). The only activity to face reduction in the number of job posts was air transport (-9.2%).

Between 2003 and 2006, participation in economy of the income paid by ACTs decreased

The income paid by ACTs amounted to R$ 31.34 billion, at current prices in 2006, corresponding to 3.23% of the group of Brazilian economy. However, the major participation of ACT income in total income occurred in 2003 (3.30%), as shown in the table below.
