In June, employment in industry increased by 0.5%

In the comparison with the immediately previous month, in the series with seasonal adjustment, the rate of 0.5% compensated the decrease accumulated of 0.4% in the two previous months.  In relation to June /07, employment registered increase of 2.5%, completing two years of positive rates in the comparison with the same month of the previous year.  In the index accumulated in the year, the percentage was 2.7%, best result for the closure of the first semester in all the time series.  The real payroll was stable (0.2%) in relation to May, in the result already seasonally adjusted.  In longer comparisons, the results were clearly positive, with 6.7% of increase compared to the same month of 2007 and 6.5% in the index accumulated in the year.

 

EMPLOYED SALARIED PERSONNEL

In June, the industrial employment increased by 0.5% compared to May, in the series with seasonal adjustment, compensating, therefore, the decrease accumulated of 0.4% in the two previous months.  With this, the index of quarterly moving average had no change between May and June (0.0%), maintaining a stable level since December 2007.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the number of employed persons in the industry had a sequence of twenty –four consecutive positive rates, reaching an increase of 2.5% in June. In the quarterly indexes, employment increased by 2.4% in the second quarter of 2008 in relation to the same period of 2007, and repeated the level of the first quarter of the year (series seasonally adjusted).  In the index accumulated in the period January-June, the index was 2.7%.  The annualized rate in June (2.8%) was equal to the one of May.

In relation to June 2007 (2.5%), ten among fourteen localities and twelve among eighteen sectors surveyed increased the number of workers in industry.  The main highlights by areas were: São Paulo (3.6%), Minas Gerais (5.3%) and North and Central West Region (4.1%).  In the industry of São Paulo, the main positive contributions came from electronic material and communication equipment  (16.8%), chemical products (19.9%), transportation (9.2%) and machines and equipment (7.0%); in the industry of Minas Gerais, the most relevant positive results came from food products and beverages (10.8%), transportation (13.6%) and electronic material and communication equipment (19.4%); and in the North and Central West Region, food products and beverages (15.4%) was the main highlight.

In the total of the country, in terms of sectors, machines and equipment (10.3%), transportation (9.9%), electronic material and communication equipment (12.4%) and food products and beverages (3.1%) brought the main positive influences on the industrial average. On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-9.4%), apparel (-6.3%) and textiles (-6.1%) brought the most important negative results.

In the comparison with the same period of the previous year, the industrial employment increased by 2.4% in the second quarter of 2008, confirming the reduction in the rhythm of growth compared to the results of the first quarter of this year (3.1%) and the last one of the previous year (3.5%).  This loss of rhythm was observed in eleven segments and in ten localities, especially machines and equipment (from 14.3% to 11.0%), apparel (from -4.1% to -6.0%) and textiles (from -4.0% to -6.7%), among the segments; and Pernambuco (from 4.5% to -3.4%) and Northeast Region (from 2.9% to 0.2%), among the areas surveyed.

In the index accumulated in the first semester of the year, the salaried employed personnel increased by 2.7%, with positive indexes in eleven localities and eleven segments.  The main positive contributions came from São Paulo (4.1%), Minas Gerais (3.7%) and North and Central West Region (3.5%), while Ceará was stable (0.0%) and the negative results came from Espírito Santo (-1.9%) and  Santa Catarina (-0.4%).  In terms of sectors, in the total of the country, the positive highlights came from machines and equipment (12.6%), transportation (10.8%), electronic material and communication equipment (12.9%) and food products and beverages (3.1%).  The main negative influences on the general rate came from footwear and leather articles (-11.1%), apparel (-5.0%), wood (-8.2%) and textiles (-5.4%).

 

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

In June, the number of hours paid to the workers in industry increased by 0.7% in relation to the previous month, in the series seasonally adjusted, after decreasing by 0.7% in May. With this, the quarterly moving average index was stable (0.1%) between the quarters closed in May and June, reverting a decrease of 0.5% in the previous month.

The comparison with the same month of the previous year had expansion of 2.6%, twenty-fifth consecutive positive result.  In the comparisons with longer periods, the quarterly and accumulated indexes of the year also had increases: 2.3% and 2.7%, respectively.  The index which compares quarter with immediately previous quarter, already seasonally adjusted was stable (-0.1%) after increasing for nine consecutive months.  The annualized rate, index accumulated in the last twelve months, also had stability from May (2.4%) to June (2.5%).

In relation to June 2007, the number of hours paid increased by 2.6%, supported mainly by increase in eleven among fourteen localities and twelve among eighteen segments surveyed.  In terms of sectors, the major positive results came from machines and equipment (10.9%), transportation (12.0%) and electronic material and communication equipment (10.2%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-8.9%) and apparel (-6.4%) brought the main negative contributions.

Also in the comparison June 08/ June 07, the localities with the most important performances for the national result were: São Paulo (3.6%), Minas Gerais (7.0%) and North and Central West Region (4.2%).  In São Paulo, fourteen activities increased the number of hours paid, especially transportation (10.0%), electronic material and communication equipment (12.7%) and chemical products (16.8%).  In the industry of Minas Gerais, stood out the sectors of food products and beverages (10.9%) and transportation (18.3%); and in the North and Central West Region, the most significant result came from food products and beverages (14.5%).  On the other hand, the main negative result in the overall result came from Pernambuco (-6.0%), influenced, mainly, by the segment of food products and beverages (-10.3%).

In quarterly based indexes, the rhythm of growth of the number of hours paid showed deceleration from the first (3.1%) to the second quarter (2.3%) of this year.  For this result contributed twelve segments surveyed, especially machines and equipment, which changed from 15.1% to 11.5%; and apparel (from -3.7% to -6.3%).  In the analysis by areas, the major decreases came from Pernambuco, which increased by 5.4% in the first quarter and decreased to 5.5% in the second one; and the Northeast Region (from 3.3% to 0.2%).

In the closure of the first semester of the year increase of 2.7% was observed, due, mainly, to the positive contributions of twelve localities and twelve sectors.  The major positive results, by localities, came from São Paulo (4.1%), Minas Gerais (4.3%) and North and Central West Region (3.5%).  On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-2.2%) brought the major negative influence.  In the analysis by sectors, the main influences came from machines and equipment (13.2%), transportation (12.1%) and metal products (9.6%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-12.2%) and apparel (-5.0%) stood out with the most significant negative contributions.

 

REAL PAYROLL

In June, the index of the real payroll of workers of industry seasonally adjusted increased by 0.2% in relation to the immediately previous month, bringing the second consecutive positive rate, accumulating increase of 1.0%.  The index of quarterly moving average was stable (-0.1%) between the quarters closed in May and June, after increasing for four consecutive months, accumulating gain of 3.0%.

In the comparisons with the same periods of the previous year, the results continued positive: 6.7% compared to June 2007 and 6.5% in the index accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months showed a slight acceleration in the rhythm of growth in June (6.3%), after bringing a result of 6.1% in May and 5.9% in April.  In the quarterly indexes, the second quarter of 2008 increased by 6.6% compared to the same period of 2007 and was 1.0% higher than the immediately previous quarter – series with seasonal adjustment.

In June, the value of the real payroll increased by 6.7% in relation to the same month of the previous year, with positive rates in fourteen localities surveyed.  The major positive contribution came from São Paulo (7.5%), supported by increases in the real payroll in the sectors of transportation (16.3%), chemical products (10.4%) and electronic material and communication equipment (8.8%).  Following, it is worth mentioning Minas Gerais (9.0%), especially electronic material and communication equipment (32.9%) and transportation (12.0%); North and Central West Region (9.6%), as a consequence of food products and beverages (13.6%) and mining and quarrying (49.8%); and Northeast (5.5%), due to the expansion in payroll in footwear and leather articles (11.7%) and machines and equipment (25.0%).

In the analysis by sectors, also in the monthly analysis, the real payroll increased in twelve among eighteen sectors surveyed, with the major positive influences coming from transportation (15.2%), machines and equipment (9.7%) and metal products (14.2%).  On the other hand, the most relevant negative results came from footwear and leather articles (-7.5%), textiles (-5.4%) and paper and printing (-1.3%).

From the first quarter of 2008 (6.5%) to the second quarter of 2008 (6.6%), both comparisons with the same period of the previous year, the index of the real payroll was almost stable. It is worth mentioning that for this type of comparison, a sequence of eighteen quarters with positive rates was observed.  In these two periods the highlight was mining and quarrying, which changed from a decrease of 4.2% to an expansion of 14.7%, influenced, mainly, by a high base of comparison in the first quarter of 2007, due to profit sharing payment.  It is also worth mentioning the increases recorded in food products and beverages (from 2.2% to 4.2%) and chemical products (from 6.9% to 9.6%).  On the other hand, basic metallurgy (from 12.6% to 7.7%) and paper and printing (-1.0% to -5.4%) were the sectors which most contributed negatively.  Among the localities, all brought positive results in the second quarter, especially Espírito Santo (from -0.9% to 6.2%), Ceará (from 4.5% to 7.6%) and North and Central West Region (from 5.6% to 8.2%).

The index accumulated in the year (6.5%) had increase in all the localities. The main positive results were recorded by São Paulo (7.7%), Minas Gerais (8.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (6.0%).  In these localities the highlights were, respectively, transportation (14.9%) and chemical products (14.3%); transportation (15.0%) and basic metallurgy (7.7%); and metal products (39.3%) and machines and equipment (22.6%).

In terms of sectors, thirteen activities increased the value of the real payroll, being that transportation (13.9%), machines and equipment (9.0%) and metal products (13.4%) brought the main positive influences.  On the other hand, the major decreases were observed in footwear and leather articles (-7.7%) and paper and printing (-3.2%).
