Fixed telephony led information services in 2006

The services of fixed-fixed telephony (sector of Telecommunications) led, in 2006, the ranking of net operational revenue of the segment of information services, with 9.9%.  Between 2005/2006, the revenue of the services of road transport of cargo (from 35.2% to 37.0%) and road transport of passengers (from 26.3% to 27.3%) increased in the segment of transport services.  The sector of elaboration and monitoring of industrial projects (mining, extraction of petroleum and natural gas) stood out in the services of engineering. 

The Supplement of Products and Services of the Annual Survey of Services - PAS 2006, applied to the companies with 20 or more employed persons, surveyed the products related to the most modern sector of the economy, which means the information services, which cover the activities related to the new technologies of communication and information, the products of the traditional activities of transportation and part of the qualified services rendered to the companies, including engineering and architecture services.

The activities which form the information services (telecommunications, activities of information and audiovisual services) generated a net operational revenue of R$ 137.3 billion, in 2006, compared to R$ 129.2 billion, in 2005.  Among the 20 products with major participation in the revenue of this segment, 11 belonged to the area of telecommunications.  The services of fixed – fixed telephony (local calls, inter-urban, international and generated in public telephones) led the participation of net operational revenue of the segment, with 9.9%, followed by complementary services (8.0%), interconnection services of mobile telephony (7.7%) and post-paid mobile telephony (local, interurban and international calls), with 7.5%.  These four products accounted for more than half (51.0%) of the revenue of information services.  Similarly to 2005, the services of fixed telephony (fixed- fixed services) continued as the main product of telecommunications in 2006 and accounted for 15.5% of the revenue (R$ 13.7 billion).

The activities of computer related activities accounted for 22.0% of the total revenue of information services in 2006, a percentage higher than the one of 2005 (20.1%).  The services of development of customized software for clients were the ones which most contributed in the generation of the revenue (17.7%), followed by consulting services in information technology (13.3%) and data processing services for others (12.3%).  These products are in the ranking among the 20 highest revenues of information services, in the seventh, tenth and twelfth position, respectively.

Audiovisual services answered for 13.7% of the revenue of information services, in 2006, increasing slightly their participation in relation to 2005 (13.0%).  In this activity, conventional television services (production, schedule, publicity and marketing) represented 47.6% of the revenue, being in the fifth position among information services, followed by basic and special packages offered by cable television companies (20.5%) and radio services (schedule and broadcasting), with 6.4%.


Road transport of cargo accounted for more than one-third of the revenue of the transport segment

Transportation services generated R$ 97.5 billion of revenue, in 2006, and R$ 90.6 billion, in 2005.  Among these services, one of the highlights was the activity road transport (cargo and passenger transport), accounting for 66.0% of the revenue of the segment of transport services, in 2006.  The road transport services of cargo represented 37.0% of the revenue of the transport sector, in 2006, a percentage above the value of 35.2% observed, in 2005.  Stood out, in this group, with 40.4%, the transportation of loose not-unitized cargo (sacked, bottled, packed or manufactured products including metallurgy items), which was in the second place among the major revenues of the products of the sector of transportation, with 15.1%.  The revenue generated by transportation services of non-dangerous solid cargo in great quantity (cereals, sand, crushed stones, ores, cement, etc) represented 22.3% of the road transport of cargo.  Stood out, also, the transportation services of dangerous products, which include fuels and liquefied petroleum gas - GLP (including gas cylinder) and other dangerous products (fertilizers, explosives, asphalt, radioactive cargo, etc),  which accounted for 11.5%  of the total revenue of road transport of cargo.

The road transport of passengers represented 27.3% of the revenue of the sector of transportation, in 2006, compared to 26.3%, in 2005.  The main product was the municipal transportation (urban and suburban) including metropolitan areas, which represented 17.7% of this segment and 64.8% of the road transport of passengers.  The municipal, inter-municipal and inter-state services of road transportation of passengers represented 24.8% of the revenue of the sector of transportation.

The services of railway and subway transportation represented 7.9% of the revenue of transportation services, in 2006, compared to a participation of 7.6% in 2005. The transportation services of solid cargo in great quantity accounted for 44.9% of the revenue generated by the activity of railway and subway transportation, in 2006, (Graph 6) and were in the sixth position in the list of products and services rendered in the total transportation activity, participating with 3.6% of the revenue.  The services of municipal passenger railway and subway transportation answered for 38.0% of the revenue of railway and subway transportation, in 2006.

The services of water transportation represented 8.9% of the revenue of the sector of transportation, in 2006, compared to 9.3%, in 2005.  The transport services of acclimatized cargo in containers (dry cargo, general cargo, frozen and liquid tanks) represented 35.3% of the total revenue of this activity, while the services of transportation of solid cargo in great quantity and liquid cargo in great quantity were responsible for 11.8% and 13.6%, respectively.

The services of water transportation of acclimatized cargo in containers (dry cargo, general cargo, frozen and liquid tanks) stood out in the ranking of the products of the sector of transportation, reaching the seventh position (3.1%), in 2006.
The companies of air transportation participated with 17.2% of the revenue of the sector of transportation, in 2006, compared to 20.0%, in 2005.  The services of air transportation of passengers in regular national domestic lines represented 47.2% of the revenue of the segment of air transportation and were in the fourth position of the ranking, participating with 8.2% of the revenue of the sector of transportation.
The companies of air transportation of other cargo, which exclude mail cargo and cases, accounted for 13.7% of the revenue of services of air transportation and were in the twelfth position in the ranking of the sector of transportation, answering for 2.4% of the revenue of the sector.

 
Sector of elaboration and monitoring of industrial projects (mining, petroleum extraction and natural gas) stood out in engineering services

The sector of engineering and architecture services stood out due to its importance regarding the net operational revenue and the employed persons, in the technical-professional services of the group services rendered to companies of the PAS 2006.  This sector registered R$ 7.7 billion of revenue, in 2006, value above the one of 2005, which had been R$ 5.8 billion.  Engineering services accounted for 74.6% of the total enterprise activity of engineering and architecture.  Among these services, stood out: elaboration and monitoring of industrial projects, including natural gas, petroleum extraction and mining projects; elaboration and monitoring of water, gas, electricity, telecommunications and residual handling projects and services of engineering relative to constructions of civil engineering; elaboration and monitoring of projects in the area of transportation; and services of engineering consulting (technical inspections, audits, examinations, etc.), which represented the four first positions in the ranking of the activity engineering and architecture.  The auxiliary services of engineering, an activity which complemented and supported the services of engineering, answered for 20.0% of the revenue of engineering and architecture, showing the economic potential of the engineering products which, summed, represented 94.7% of the revenue of the segment.  The services of architecture brought 2.4% of the total revenue of the sector of Engineering and Architecture.
