The activity Furniture and household appliances (increase of 27.8% in the volume of sales in relation to April 2007) led to the major influence (46%) in the formation of the overall rate of Retail Trade.  In the accumulated index of the year, the rate was 19.8%, and in the last 12 months, 16.0%.  These results, not only positive but above the average established by retail, were caused basically by the expansion of credit; reduction of the prices of electronic products and improvement of the overall wages of the employed population.

The second major contribution (17% of the overall rate) in April came from the segment Textiles, apparel and footwear which expanded the volume of sales in 19.5%, in relation to the same month of the previous year.  This result may be explained by the good performance of the Brazilian economy.  The activity had in the year and in the last 12 months changes of 15.0% and 13.0%, respectively.

The segment Fuels and lubricants, with 8.3% of change in the volume of sales in the relation April 08/ April 07, answered in this month for the third major contribution.   In terms of index accumulated in the year, the rate reached 6.0%, and in the last 12 months, 5.3%.  This performance was a result of the stability of prices of Fuels, together with the improvement of the economic conditions in the Country.

The activities of personal and domestic use, which includes segments such as Department stores, optics, jewelry, sport articles, toys, etc., brought the fourth major influence in the formation of the retail rate, with change of 10.2% in the volume of sales in relation to April 2007.  This rate, although above the overall average, was lower than the one of the previous months due to the base-effect caused by the fact that Easter, which in 2007 occurred in the month of April, in this year occurred in the month of March.  Regarding the indexes accumulated, the rate for the first four-month period of the year was 23.3% and for the last 12 months, 23.0%.

The activity Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles, with the fifth major participation in the overall retail trade, had growth of 14.8% in the comparison with April 2007 and rates accumulated of 13.6% for the first four-month period of the year and 11.4% in the last 12 months.  The conditions of the economy as a whole, the expansion of the overall wages and of credit, together with the increase of the sales of generic products, were the main factors which explain the positive performance of the segment.

The segment Office material, computer and communication equipment, responsible for the sixth major influence in the formation of the overall rate, obtained increase in the volume of sales, in April, of 23.3% compared to the same month of the previous year and rate accumulated in the year of 27.6% and in the last 12 months of 30.6%.  It was the activity with the second major level of growth in the month.  Among the factors which produced this performance stood out the reduction of prices of products of this type, besides better financing conditions and the growing importance of computer and communication products in the consumer habits of the families.

The segment Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with change of  0.6% in the volume of sales in April, compared to the same month of the previous year, was responsible for one of the lowest contributions for the overall retail trade, differently than in the last months, when it had the major influence.  In terms of index accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, the activity had growth of 6.4% in both comparisons.  The reduction of the monthly performance was caused, probably, by the increase in the prices of food products and, also, by the Easter effect, as already explained.

The activity Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles with growth of 10.5%, brought once more the lower influence in the result of retail trade.  The rate accumulated in the four-month period changed by 11.3% and in the last 12 months, 9.1%.  These results were a consequence also of the general scenario of the economy.

The Extended Retail Trade, which includes retail and also the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and accessories and Construction material, registered growth in relation to March 2008 of 1.4% for the volume of sales and 1.8% for the nominal revenue, both rates with seasonal adjustment. Compared to April 2007 (without seasonal adjustment), the changes were 15.8% for the volume of sales and 20.5% for the nominal revenue.  In the index accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, the sector presented rates of 15.0% and 14.3% for the volume of sales and 19.3% and 17.4% for the nominal revenue, respectively.

Regarding the volume of sales, the activity of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and accessories registered expansion of 29.2% in relation to April 2007, accumulating in the four-month period changes of 23.4% and 23.2%, respectively.  With the monthly result, the activity continued to bring the major contribution for the overall rate of extended retail.  The reduction of the interest rates and the increase of financing terms, as well as positive expectations regarding the maintenance of employment, were the main factors for the expansion of the sales of the segment.

Regarding Construction material, the changes were 19.3% in the relation April 08/ April 07, 13.0% in the index accumulated in the year, and 12.5% in the last 12 months. This performance resulted from the favorable scenario of the economy, especially regarding credit and overall wages, combined with government incentives to construction.
