In October, industrial production increased in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed

From September to October, the seasonally adjusted indexes by area for industrial production increased in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed by IBGE. The only exception was Pernambuco (-1.3%), with a falling result, after a period in which it accumulated increase of 1.5%.

From September to October, the seasonally adjusted indexes by area for industrial production increased in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed by IBGE. The only exception was Pernambuco (-1.3%), with a falling result, after a period in which it accumulated increase of 1.5%. Paraná (13.6%) was the only state with a two-digit increase. With growth above the national average (2.8%), also feature: Rio de Janeiro (8.5%), Espírito Santo (6.6%), Amazonas (5.4%), Goiás (3.9%) and Bahia (3.0%). The results for the remaining areas were: Rio Grande do Sul (2.8%), Minas Gerais (2.3%), Pará (2.0%), São Paulo (1.5%), Santa Catarina (1.4%), Northeast Region (1.3%) and Ceará (0.5%).

 

In relation to October last year, the indexes had very positive results, with increase in the 14 areas surveyed, and two-digit results in five of them. The states of Amazonas (15.4%), Paraná (14.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.3%), São Paulo (11.1%) and Santa Catarina (10.6%) had increase above the national average (10.3%). Below the figure for the country, but also with high rates were Minas Gerais (9.8%) and Espírito Santo (9.2%). The other results were: Goiás (5.3%), Rio de Janeiro (5.1%), Pará (4.6%), Bahia (4.2%), Ceará (3.7%), Northeast Region (3.4%) and Pernambuco (1.3%). It is important to highlight the occurrence of one extra working day in October this year, in comparison with the previous year.

 

Another sign of the dynamism of industrial activity is related to the observation of the higher rhythm of increase in October, compared to the increase accumulated in the period January-September, which reaches thirteen of the fourteen areas.

Considering the indicator accumulated in the year - 5.9% for the country - the regional indexes were also positive in all the areas, except in Ceará, which had null increase (0.9%). Minas Gerais (8.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (7.9%) and Paraná (7.6%) had the highest rates, reflecting the increase of the internal demand for durable goods (automobiles and car pieces), of the recovery of the agriculture sector (agricultural machines) and of the foreign sales of commodities (iron ore, sugar, poultry meat). With rates similar to the national average featured Espírito Santo (6.1%), São Paulo (5.8%) and Santa Catarina (5.7%). The remaining rates ranged between 4.6%, in Pernambuco, e 1.3%, in Bahia.

Amazonas 

 

In October, the industrial production of Amazonas increased in comparison with the immediately previous month (5.4%), in the seasonally adjusted series; this result made up for the decrease of 5.2% which had occurred in September. In relation to the same month last year, the increase of 15.4% was the highest rate since February 2006 (16.6%). The indicator accumulated in the year (3.3%) was above the September rate (1.8%). The annualized rate, that is, there was also acceleration of the index accumulated in the last twelve months: it changed from 0.5% in September, to 2.7%, in October.

 

In comparison with October 2006, nine of the eleven subsectors had positive rates. The increase of 15.4% resulted, above all, from the two-digit increase of editing and printing (86.6%), other transportation equipment (29.4%) and food products and beverages (12.9%). In the first of these three subsectors, the highlight was the increased production of DVDs; in the second one, of motorcycles and, in the third one, of syrup preparations for beverage elaboration. The negative contributions came from chemical products (-15.7%) and mining and quarrying industry (-6.9%), mainly due to decreases in photographic films and petroleum.

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in the year (3.3%), in comparison with the same period in 2006, there was increase of production in six of the eleven subsectors. The most significant positive contributions came from editing and printing (77.8%), other transportation (18.4%), food products and beverages (15.1%) and machinery and equipment (51.6%). On the other hand, electronic and communication material and equipment remains as the most significant negative influence, affected, mainly by the decrease of the production of mobile telephones and television sets.

 

Pará

 

From September to October, the industry in Paraná increased by 2.0%, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having decreased by 1.6% in the previous month. The comparison with October 2006 showed increase of 4.6% and the index accumulated in the period January-October was 2.8%.The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, which had been on a falling trend since the beginning of the year changed from 4.8% to 4.4% in October.

 

In relation to October 2006, the industry in the state of Paraná grew by 4.6%, with increase in four of the six subsectors surveyed. Among these activities, the main impacts came from mining and quarrying industry (8.5%) and from cellulose and paper (27.4%). In these subsectors, the highlights came from iron ore, cellulose and toilet paper respectively. On the other hand, metallurgy (-4.3%) was the main negative contribution, with the main decreases in the item aluminum oxide.  

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in January-October, the increase of 2.8% was a consequence, mainly, of the positive performance of three sectors, being the highlight mining and quarrying industry (9.0%), which had increase of iron ore production. On the other had, food products and beverages (-14.3%) was the main negative impact to the overall result, as a consequence of the exports of frozen crustaceans in 2007. 

 

Northeast Region

 

In October, the industry of the Northeast Region had increase of 1.3% in relation to September, in the seasonally adjusted series. In comparison with the same month in the previous year, there was increase of 3.4%; the indicator accumulated in the year changed by 2.4%. The index accumulated in the last twelve months, on a falling trend, changed from 2.4% in September to 2.0% in October. 

 

In relation to October 2006, the increase of 3.4% reflected, above all, the increase in nine of the eleven subsectors surveyed. The main positive impacts came from food products and beverages (2.8%), cellulose and paper (16.3%) and textiles (8.7%), with increase in the following items: powdered milk; refined sugar; cellulose; cotton cloths and towels, respectively. Negative contributions were those of petroleum refining and alcohol production (-0.7%) and chemical products (-0.2%), which presented decrease in the production of naphtha for petrochemical industry and gasoline; and fertilizers.

 

Considering the index accumulated in the period January-October, the increase of 2.4% was based on the positive performance of six activities, especially food products and beverages (7.2%), non-metallic minerals (9.0%) and chemical products (2.1%). In these subsectors, the highlights were the production of toasted coffee and soft drinks; cement, sinks, bathtubs and other toilet articles; paints and varnishes for construction and non-saturated ethylene, respectively. The main negative impacts, on the contrary, came from cellulose and paper (-4.7%) and electric machines, appliances and material (-6.1%), which faced production decreases, especially of cellulose, toilet paper; transformers and electric ignition components, respectively.

 

Ceará

 

In October, the seasonally adjusted industrial production in Ceará increased 0.5% in relation to the immediately previous month, the third consecutive positive rate, with accumulated increase of 5.3% in the period July-October. In comparison with the same month in 2006, there was increase of 3.7% and the index accumulated in the period January-October was stable (0.0%) in comparison with the same period in the previous year. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months changed from 1.7% in September, to 1.0% in October, and has remained in a falling trend since the beginning of the year.

 

Considering the monthly indicator, the industry in Ceará grew by 3.7%, with positive results in six of the ten subsectors surveyed. The main positive contribution was that of footwear and leather articles (15.5%), due to the increased production of plastic and leather footwear. It is also worth mentioning food products and beverages (5.2%), due to the increased production of toasted peanuts and cashew nuts, and processed cashew nuts; and electric machines, appliances and material (13.2%), with transformers as the main highlights. On the other hand, the main negative influences came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-23.5%) and apparel and accessories (-9.0%), due, mainly, to the decrease of the production of asphalt and diesel; and of apparel for professional and pants for female use.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year was stable in relation to the same period in the previous year (0.0%), with positive results in five activities. The main positive impacts came from food products and beverages (6.9%), as a consequence, mainly, of the increment in the production of toasted peanuts and cashew nuts, and of processed cashew nuts, and of chemical products (16.9%), with paints and varnishes for construction and veterinary vaccines.  On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-33.3%) and textiles (-4.9%), due, respectively, to the reduced production of gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas; cotton cloths and thread.  

 

Pernambuco

 

In October, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Pernambuco decreased by 1.3% in relation to the immediately previous month, after two consecutive months with growing figures, a period in which there was accumulated gain of 1.5. In comparison with October 2006, the increase was 1.3%; the index accumulated in the year also changed positively by 4.6%. The index accumulated in the last twelve months decreased between September (5.3%) and October (4.3%), after reaching its peak in August (5.8%). 

 

The monthly indicator of industry in Pernambuco increased by 1.3%, with positive rates in five of the eleven activities surveyed. The main positive contributions came from chemical products (20.5%), mainly due to the production of paints and varnishes for construction and of styrene-butadiene; and of non-metallic minerals (14.6%0, due to the increased production of glass bottles and containers for packaging; and sinks, bathtubs, bidets and similar ceramic articles. On the other hand, the negative impacts came from food products and beverages (-1.8%) and metallurgy (-5.5%), due, respectively, to the reduced production of soft drinks, aluminum plates and strips, and carbon steel beams. 

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased by 4.6%, with positive results in seven subsectors. The main contributions came from chemical products (21.2%), food products and beverages (1.7%) and rubber and plastic (11.4%); in these subsectors there was increase of the production of paints and varnishes for construction and of styrene-butadiene rubber; ice-cream and margarine; and plastic films. On the contrary, the most relevant negative contributions came from electric machines, appliances and equipment (-3.8%) and footwear and leather articles (-12.1%) due mainly, to the reduced production of electric batteries and bovine leather and rawhide. 

 

Bahia

 

In October, the seasonally adjusted industrial production in Bahia increased 3.0% in relation to the immediately previous month, after facing decrease for two consecutive months, a period in which there was accumulated loss of 4.5%. In comparison with similar period in the previous year, the results were positive: 4.2% in relation to October 2006 and 1.3% accumulated in the year. The annualized rate, that is, the index accumulated in the last twelve months, remained practically stable from September (0.9%) and October (0.8%). 

 

In terms of the monthly indicator, the industry of Bahia increased 4.2%, with increments in eight of the nine subsectors surveyed. The main positive contribution came from cellulose and paper (18.9%), mainly due to the production of cellulose. It is also worth mentioning the contribution of chemical products (4.3%), mainly due to ammonium sulfate and ammoniac solution; and of food products and beverages (6.5%), due to the increment in the production of powdered milk, beer and draft beer. On the other hand, the only decrease was observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-3.4%), as a result of the reduced production of lubricant oil and naphtha. 

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased 1.3%, with positive results in five of the nine subsectors surveyed. The main influence came from food products and beverages (11.8%), due to the increased production of flour and pellets of the extraction of processed and crude soybeans oil. Other important items were chemical products (1.6%) and rubber and plastic (14.0%), due respectively, to the increased production of non-saturated ethylene, ammonium sulfate; plastic packages for food products, and plastic bottles and containers and other related articles. The main decreases occurred in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-2.4%) and cellulose and paper (-4.7%), due, respectively, to the reduced production of naphtha and diesel, and of cellulose.

 

Minas Gerais

 

The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Minas Gerais increased 2.3% from September to October, after decrease of 2.6% in the previous month. In comparison with October 2006, there was increase of 9.8% and increment of 8.6% of the result accumulated in the first ten months of the year. The indicator accumulated in the year remained on a growing trend, having changed from 7.7% in September to 8.2% in October.

 

In relation to October 2006, the industrial production in Minas increased 9.8%, with changes in both transformation industry (8.9%) and in mining and quarrying industry (14.8%). The latter was the highlight as the second major contribution to the overall indicator, having been benefited by the maintenance of exports of iron ore. In manufacturing industry, nine of the twelve subsectors surveyed had increased, with automotive vehicles (32.5%) as the highlight, mainly due to the production of cars. It is also worth mentioning the high rate of cellulose and paper (93.1%), a result of the comparison affected by a technical interruption of activities in an important company of this subsector in October 2006. As the third major impact on manufacturing industry, machinery and equipment increased 23.7%, affected by the increased production of capital goods used in construction. On the other hand, among the negative contributions, the highlight was food products and beverages (-6.5%). 

 

The indicator accumulated in the first tem months of the year points to increase of 8.6%, resulting from the expansion of tem subsectors. Among these are found automotive vehicles (21.3%), which represents the main positive contribution, followed by mining and quarrying industry (10.5%) and machinery and equipment (21.8%). 

 

Espírito Santo

 

In October, the seasonally adjusted industrial production of Espírito Santo increased 6.6% in comparison with that of September, after facing decrease of 10.5% in the previous year. In comparison with October 2006 there was increase of 9.2% and, accumulated in the year, expansion of 6.1%. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months (6.8%) had the same rate as in September. 

 

In relation to October last year, the production increased 9.2%, with increases in three of the five subsectors surveyed. Metallurgy (31.3%0 was the main positive impact, being the highlight the production of steel ingots and blocks. On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from cellulose and paper (-9.8%) still reflects the consequences of a technical stop in the production of an important company of this subsector, which started in September, and food products and beverages (-4.1%), affected by the reduced production of chocolate candies, toffee candies and others were the main negative contributions.

 

The index accumulated in the year increased by  6.1%, with mining an quarrying industry as the main positive impact on the formation of the overall rate. In manufacturing industry (2.4%, food products and beverages (7.4%) and metallurgy (3.5%) were the main positive contributions, influenced by the items steel ingots and blocks. On the other hand, cellulose and paper was the only subsector with a negative rate (-1.6%).

 

Rio de Janeiro

 

The industrial production of Rio de Janeiro, in October, had positive results in the different types of comparison. From September to October, in the seasonally adjusted series, there was increase of 8.5%, after decrease of 4.1% in the previous month. In relation to October 2006, there was expansion of 5.1%, the best result since January last year (5.8%). The accumulated indicators, both in the fist ten months of the year (1.8%) and in the last twelve months (1.5%) were above those of September (1.4% and 1.1%, respectively).

 

The main contribution to the rate of 5.1% obtained in comparison with the previous month came from manufacturing industry (8.7%), once mining and quarrying industry (-9.7%) maintains its negative rate. The latte reflects the reduction of petroleum extraction due to the interruption of activities after a technical stop in petroleum platforms. In manufacturing industry (8.7%), which has reached its best results since August 2002 (18%), eight of the twelve subsectors surveyed had increase of production; the main contribution, in this case, came from automotive vehicles (45.7%), followed by petroleum refining and alcohol production (15.9%) and other chemical products (20.5%). In these subsectors, it is worth mentioning the production of trucks, cars and buses; gasoline, diesel, airplane kerosene; and herbicides. On the other hand, pharmaceutical industry remained as the main negative contribution, with decrease of 12.6%, affected by the reduced production of most products surveyed.  

 

The accumulated production of the period January-October shows expansion of 1.8%, with positive rates in eight of the thirteen subsectors surveyed. The most relevant contributions were those of automotive vehicles (18.4%) and metallurgy (11.0%), which grew at two digit rates, influenced, mainly, by the increases of the items trucks, and tin plates and carbon steel bobbins, respectively. Also relevant were the positive contributions from editing and printing (7.9%) and other chemical products (6.5%), affected by the items newspapers and herbicides. Among the falling activities, the most relevant one was pharmaceutical industry (-15.5%), followed by food products (-7.4%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-3.3%) and mining and quarrying industry (-1.8%). In these subsectors, the highlights were the decreases observed in medicines, fish preparations and  canned fish ; gasoline and petroleum, respectively.

  

São Paulo

 

 

In October, the industrial production of São Paulo increased by 1.5% compared to the result in the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, keeping a sequence of three positive rates; in this period there was accumulated gain of 3.6%. In comparison with the same month in the previous year, there was increase of 11.1%, the highest rate since December 2004 (11.9%). The indicator accumulated in the year showed the increase of 5.8%. The index accumulated in the last twelve months showed the gain of rhythm from September (4.5%) to October (5.0%). 

 

In relation to October 2006 (11.1%), most of (17) of the twenty activities surveyed contributed positively to the formation of the overall rate, being the mains highlights: automotive vehicles (25.0%), food products (12.5%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (21.0%) and machinery and equipment (14.5%). The increases observed in these subsectors are explained, mainly, by the production of cars; crystallized sugar; gasoline; machining centers. On the other hand, cellulose and paper (-2.9%), pharmaceutics (-1.0%) and other transportation equipment (-0.9%) were the main negative impacts, influenced, mainly, by the decreases occurred in paper for writing and printing; medicines and airplanes.

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased 5.8%, with positive contributions from seventeen subsectors. The main positive results were those of machinery and equipment (15.3%), electronic material and communication equipment (13.2% ), automotive vehicles (4.8%) and pharmaceutics (8.6%), mainly affected by the increases which occurred in machining centers; mobile telephones; cars; and medicines, respectively. On the other hand, the negative impacts came from: electric machines, appliances and equipment (-5.2%), cellulose and paper (-1.3%), and editing and printing (-1.0%), especially due to the reduction of the production of transformers; sanitary napkins; magazines.  

 

 

Paraná

 

The industrial production of Paraná increased by 13.6% in October, compared to the immediately previous month (seasonally adjusted series), after decrease of 5.2% in September. In relation to October 2006, the increase of 14.4% was the biggest since June 2005 (16.9%). The indicator accumulated in the year reached 7.6% and the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months changed from 6.2% in September, to 7.2%, in October. 

 

Considering the monthly index, the production of Paraná increased by 14.4%, with positive results in eleven of the fourteen activities surveyed. The main contribution to the formation of the overall rate came from automotive vehicles, which had a two-digit rate (66.0%), due to the increased production of trucks and cars. Other highlights are machinery and equipment (44.4%) and food products (6.4%). In these subsectors, the highlight was the increased production of the following items: machinery for processing raw material and tractors; crystallized sugar and bagasses and other chemical products (20.3%), beverages (-9.3%) and cellulose and paper (-2.2%), due, mainly, to the fall of fertilizers, soft drinks and beers; and papers used in writing and printing, respectively.   

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased 7.6%, with positive rates in nine subsectors. The main contributions came from automotive vehicles (27.5%) and, to a lower extent, machinery and equipment (20.6%) and food products (3.7%), due, mainly, to the increased production of the following items: trucks and cars; harvesting machines and machinery for processing raw material; and meats and poultry giblets and crystallized sugar. On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from wood (-7.1%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-2.8%) ad editing and printing (-2.7%), being a major highlight the reduction of the production of plywood and metal covered plates; diesel and gasoline; and school books and printed material, respectively.  

 

Santa Catarina

 

In October, seasonally adjusted the industrial production of Santa Catarina increased 1.4% in relation to September, after having faced negative change of 0.3% in the previous month. In comparison with October 2006, the industrial sector of this state increased 10.6%, maintaining a sequence of tem months with positive results in this type of comparison. This way, the indicators accumulated in the year (5.7%) and in the last twelve months (4.6%) had increase of growth rhythm in comparison with September (5.1% and 3.8%, respectively).

 

In comparison with October last year, the increase of 10.6% is the best result since January2005 (11.2%) and reflects the favorable performance of 10 among 11 subsectors surveyed. The main impacts on the overall average were those of automotive vehicles (23.2%); machinery and equipment (10.7%); rubber and plastic (18.6%) and electric machines, appliances and material (30.8%), all of them affected by the increased production of the following items: car and bus trucks; refrigerators and freezers; pieces and accessories for the car industry, and electric engines. Other relevant positive contributions came from textiles (10.2%), apparel (13.2%) and food products (4.5%), in which the main highlights were towels and similar items; cotton outfits for male use; and meats and poultry giblets. On the other hand, the only negative result was wood (-1.9%).

 

The production accumulated in January-October 2007 show overall increase of 5.7% reaching tem subsectors. The most relevant contributions to the overall result of industry in the state came from the subsectors of food products (8.5%) and machinery and equipment (8.4%). In these subsectors, the main highlights were the items meats and poultry giblets, in the former subsector, and refrigerators and compressors, in the latter. It is also worth mentioning the good performance of automotive vehicles (9.1%) and of electric machines, appliances and equipment (13.9%), influenced by the products trucks and car trunks and electric engines. The only activity which did not undergo changes in the result accumulated in ten months was metallurgy, which remained stable in comparison with the same period in the previous year (0.0%).  

 

 

Rio Grande do Sul 

 

In October, the industrial production in Rio Grande do Sul increased by 2.8% in relation to September, in the seasonally adjusted series. The comparison with the same month in the previous year showed increase of 11.3%, and the indicator accumulated in the year increased by 7.9%. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, which had been on a falling trend since September 2006, increased by 6.8%.

 

In the monthly comparison, production increased by 11.3%. This change can be seen as a consequence of the positive performances of 11 of the 14 area surveyed. The most relevant contributions to the formation of the overall rate came from machinery and equipment (43.0%), automotive vehicles (26.7%) and food products (8.9%), in which the highlights were, respectively, harvesting machines and air conditioning appliances; trucks for buses and cars; bovine and poultry meat. On the other hand, the most significant decreases came from chemical products (-5.9%) and furniture (-10.8%), being the highlights the decreases in styrene- butadiene rubber, fertilizers; and metal chairs and wood shelves, respectively. 

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in the period January-October (7.9%), there were increases in ten activities, especially petroleum refining and alcohol production (32.4%), machinery and equipment (32.8%) and automotive vehicles (28.9%). These subsectors had increases in production, mainly in naphtha for petrochemical industry, gasoline, hydraulic tools for non-electric engines, harvesting machines; axis, semi-axis and other transmission pieces and automobiles. On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-8.1%) and tobacco (-6.1%) accounted for the most significant negative decreases, especially in the items: leather footwear and processed tobacco.

 

  

Goiás

 

The seasonally adjusted industrial production of Goiás increased by 3.9% from September to October, after having decreased by 1.1% in August. In comparison with October 2006, the change was 5.3%, and the increase accumulated in the year, 2.0%. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months was practically stable between September (2.3%) and October (2.2%). 

 

The increase of 5.3% in comparison with the same month in the previous year reflects the positive performance of four of the five segments. The major influences came from chemical products (15.1%), due, mainly, to the production of fertilizers and medicines; and of food products and beverages (3.6%), with increased production of mayonnaise and crystallized sugar. On the other hand, the production of mining and quarrying industry fell by 2.8% due to the decrease of the asbestos production. 

 

The indicator accumulated in the period January-October increased by 2.0% with positive figures in all the five subsectors. The major contribution came from mining and quarrying industry (10.0%), being the highlights asbestos and ballast. Other highlights were non-metallic minerals (9.5%) and food products and beverages (0.7%), due to the increased production of cement and mayonnaise, respectively.
