Brazil has 183.9 million inhabitants according to IBGE’s Population Count

The current population of Brazil is 183.9 million inhabitants, according to the final report of the Population Count conducted by IBGE, which has covered 5,435 municipalities with up to 170 thousand residents. The report will be result will be submitted to the Brazilian Court of Audit (TCU), which will use it for the calculation of the shares relative to the Municipal Participation Fund (FPM). In the last seven years, the Brazilian population has increased by over 14 million inhabitants, which corresponds to a state of the size of Bahia. In the Count, a total of 30 million households have been visited all over the country.  

There has been population growth in all the Major Regions in relation to Census 2000, but there have been no changes in the ranking of the most populated ones: the Southeast is still the leader, with 77.8 million inhabitants, followed by the Northeast (58.5 million); South (26.7 million), North (14.5 million); and Central West (13.2 million). Seven years ago, the order was the same, and the figures were, respectively: 72.4 million (Southeast); 47.7 million (Northeast); 25 million (South); 12.9 million (North); and 11.6 million (Central West).

São Paulo remains as the most populated state, with 39.8 million inhabitants, followed by Minas Gerais (19.2 million), Rio de Janeiro (15.4 million), Bahia (14 million) and Rio Grande do Sul (10.5 million). The least populated state is Roraima (395.7 thousand inhabitants), followed by Amapá (587.3 thousand) and Acre (655.3 thousand). Palmas, in Tocantins, is still the least populated capital in Brazil, with 178.3 thousand inhabitants.

The municipality of São Paulo is still the most populated in Brazil (10.8 thousand) whereas the smallest one is Borá, in the western part of São Paulo. Seven years ago this municipality had 795 inhabitants and today and, according to the Count, it has 804 residents. Second to Borá is Serra da Saudade, in Minas Gerais (863 inhabitants) and Anhanguera, in Goiás (966 inhabitants), which also featured in this order in Census 2000. In the case of Serra da Saudade, the municipality became even smaller, since in the period of Census 2000 it had 873 inhabitants.

Since Census 2000, the number of municipalities with over one million inhabitants increased from 13 to 14. The latest one included was Campinas, which is the third municipality of the state of São Paulo featuring in the following list: São Paulo (10.8 million); Rio de Janeiro (6.1 million); Salvador (2.8 million); Brasília (2.45 million); Fortaleza (2.43 million); Belo Horizonte (2.41 million), Curitiba (1.7 million); Manaus (1.6 million), Recife (1.5 million); Porto Alegre (1.42 million); Belém (1.40 million); Goiânia (1.24 million); Guarulhos (1.23 million); and Campinas (1.03 million). 

According to Population Count 2007, 444 municipalities have lost part of FPM in 2007, whereas 403 other will be entitled to higher FPM, and 4,588 kept the level observed in 2006. The division of FPM among the Brazilian municipalities will be done according to Law no. 106, of 2001, which has altered the text of Complementary Law no. 91, of 1997. Still according to Complementary Law no. 106, December 31, 2007 will be the deadline to implement the reduction of FPM of about 1.6 thousand municipalities, which will receive, in 2008, a different share of FPM.
