In September, industrial employment increased 1.0%

Industrial employment increased 1.0% from August to September, third consecutive rate and the highest rate since May 2004 (1.1%).  The number of paid hours to workers and the real payroll also increased 1.0% in September compared to August.  In relation to September 2006, the growth of employment in industry was 2.8%, in the indicator accumulated in the year it was 1.7%, and in the last twelve months it was 1.4%.  The end of the third quarter showed growth of 2.3% in relation to the same period of the previous year, and of 1.0% compared to the second quarter of 2007.  The positive evolution of the indexes of industrial employment during 2007 showed the major dynamism of the productive activity.

In the comparison with September 2006, fifteenth consecutive positive rate (2.8%), eleven among fourteen areas and twelve among eighteen sectors increased the number of workers.  São Paulo (4.4%), Paraná (4.8%) and Minas Gerais (2.7%) brought the most significant results on the overall result.  In the industry of the state, hirings were greater than the dismissals mainly in machines and equipment (11.1%) and transportation (8.5%).  This last segment was the main responsible for the increase of employment in the industries of Paraná and Minas Gerais, with increase of 32.5% and 15.9%, respectively.  On the other hand, Pernambuco (-4.8%) brought the main negative result on the overall result, due to decreases in food products and beverages (-5.8%), performance associated to the lesser absorption of workers in the sugar cane sector.

In national level, the groups with major positive contributions were food products and beverages (4.2%), transportation (10.5%) and machines and equipment (9.6%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-9.3%) and wood (-6.0%) brought the major negative results.

In the comparisons with same quarter of the previous year, the period July-September presented increase of 2.3%, the major rate since the first quarter of 2005 (2.8%), and maintained a sequence of five consecutive positive rates in this comparison.  Between the second (1.7%) and third quarters (2.3%), nine segments accelerated their results in the indicator of employment, especially transportation, which changed from 5.4% to 9.4% and food products and beverages, from 3.2% to 4.2%.  Between these two periods, seven localities had higher rates in the third quarter, especially Rio Grande do Sul (from – 0.1% to 1.8%).

In the indicator accumulated January-September, the employed persons increased 1.7%, close to the result observed in the end of the year of 2004 (1.8%). Thirteen localities and thirteen segments contributed positively for the overall index.  In the analyses by sectors, the main positive results came from food products and beverages (4.3%), transportation (6.3%) and metal products (6.5%).  Among the localities, São Paulo (2.8%), Paraná (2.6%) and Northeast Region (1.6%) brought the most significant results.  On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-0.6%) recorded the only negative result in the surveyed areas and, in the analysis by sectors, the highlights were footwear and leather articles (-6.8%) and apparel (-4.4%).

 

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

The number of hours paid to workers of industry, in September, increased 1.0% in relation to August, in the series without seasonal influence, second consecutive positive result, accumulating gain of 1.3% between September and July. 

In the comparison with September 2006 the rate was 2.2%, completing a sequence of sixteen positive rates.  In the indicator accumulated in the year, the increase was 1.4%.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, in an upward trend since September 2006, changed from 1.1%, in August to 1.3%, in September.  In the quarterly indicators, the number of paid hours in the period July-September 2007 increased 2.0% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year and was stable (0.0%) compared to the immediately previous quarter, in the seasonally adjusted series.

In the comparison September 2007/ September 2006, the number of hours paid increased 2.2%, with positive contributions coming from nine among fourteen localities and eleven among eighteen surveyed groups.   In the analysis by sectors, the major positive contributions came from food products and beverages (4.1%), transportation (11.4%) and metal products (9.1%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-13.0%) and apparel (-3.1%) brought the main negative results.

Still in the comparison September 2007/ September 2006, the localities responsible for the major positive results in the overall result were São Paulo (3.9%), Paraná (4.8%) and Minas Gerais (2.0%).  In the industry of the state, ten among eighteen activities increased the number of hours paid, especially transportation (11.3%), machines and equipment (8.5%) and food products and beverages (4.7%). In Paraná, stood out transportation (32.4%) and food products and beverages (4.8%); and in the industry of Minas Gerais, the most significant increase came from transportation (16.4%).  In the analysis by sectors, the main negative influences came from Rio de Janeiro (-1.9%) and Pernambuco (-3.0%), with the segment food products and beverages bringing the worst result in the two states, decreases of 11.2% and 3.3%, respectively.

In quarterly basis, the number of hours paid continued in an ascending trend, with a growth of 2.0%  in the third quarter of this year, highest result since the first quarter of 2005 (2.2%).  From the second (1.4%) to the third quarter (2.0%), both comparisons with similar period of the previous year, ten among eighteen groups increased the index of hours paid, standing out transportation, which changed from 5.5% to 10.1%; and metal products (from 5.0% to 9.3%).  In the analysis by areas, the major increases came from the North and Central West Region (from -0.4% to 1.5%) and Minas Gerais (from 0.1% to 1.9%).

The indicator accumulated in the period January- September registered increase of 1.4%, due mainly to increases observed in twelve localities and in eleven segments.  The major positive results came from São Paulo (2.2%), Paraná (3.1%) and Northeast Region (1.6%).  On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-0.9%) and Bahia (-0.5%) were the only localities which influenced negatively the overall result.  In the analysis by sectors, the main contributions in the total of the country came from food products and beverages (4.5%), transportation (6.3%) and metal products (6.0%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-8.9%) and apparel (-5.6%) brought the main negative results.

REAL PAYROLL

In September, the value of the real payroll of the workers of industry seasonally adjusted increased by 1.0% in the comparison with the immediately previous month, fourth consecutive positive result, accumulating in this period gain of 2.3%.  The indicator of the quarterly moving average, in growing trend since June, registered increase of 0.7% between August and September.

In the comparisons with similar periods of the previous year, the results continued positive: 6.0% compared to September 2006 and 5.0% in the indicator accumulated in the year.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, while changing from 3.9% in August to 4.2% in September, confirmed the ascending trend which began in December 2006. In the third quarter of 2007, the growth was 5.5%, in the comparison with similar quarter of the previous year, and 1.2%, compared to the immediately previous quarter – series with seasonal adjustment.

In the comparison September 2007/ September 2006, the real payroll increased 6.0%, the eighteenth consecutive positive result.  All the fourteen localities had increase, coming from São Paulo (5.2%) the major positive influence, due, mainly, to the wage gain in the sectors of transportation (17.7%), chemical products (9.9%) and metal products (9.6%).  It is also worth mentioning, the results which came from Rio Grande do Sul (10.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (9.6%).

In the analysis by sectors, the value of the real payroll increased in fourteen among eighteen groups.  The most important positive results came from transportation (15.6%), metal products (16.9%), food products and beverages (6.2%) and chemical products (8.6%).  On the other hand, the main decreases came from paper and printing (-5.5%), footwear and leather articles (-6.9%) and wood (-10.5%).

In the quarterly analysis, the index of the value of the real payroll in relation to the same period of the previous year, showed increase from the second (4.9%) to the third quarter of 2007 (5.5%).  This trend could be observed in eight localities, especially Rio Grande do Sul, which changed from 6.7% to 11.8% and Rio de Janeiro (from 7.5% to 9.6%).  In the analysis by sectors, twelve segments had major dynamism in the third quarter compared to the second quarter, standing out transportation (from 5.2% to 10.9%), metal products (from 6.4% to 13.9%) and food products and beverages (from 5.1% to 5.8%).

The indicator accumulated in the year (5.0%) had increase in the payroll in all the surveyed activities.  The main contribution came from São Paulo (3.9%), due to chemical products (13.5%) and transportation (5.1%).  It is also worth mentioning Rio Grande do Sul (7.5%), Northeast Region (6.5%) and Minas Gerais (5.5%).  In these localities, stood out respectively, metal products (47.1%) and transportation (15.3%); food products and beverages (6.5%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (27.5%); and food products and beverages (11.4%) and basic metallurgy (4.5%).

In the analysis by sectors, among the thirteen activities which had gain, the major positive results came from chemical products (11.6%), food products and beverages (6.5%) and transportation (5.7%).  On the other hand, the main decrease in the real payroll were observed in paper and printing (-4.4%), wood (-8.2%) and footwear and leather articles (-2.4%).
