In September, industrial production decreased in 11 among 14 surveyed localities

Negative performance in the majority of areas was observed from August to September, in the series with seasonal adjustment.  The situation is the opposite in the comparisons with the same period of the previous year and in the indicator accumulated in the year, with expansion in 8 and 13 localities, respectively, of the total of 14 investigated.

In September, the regional indexes of industrial production seasonally adjusted showed a prevailing of negative results compared to August, with eleven among fourteen localities with decrease.  Espírito Santo (-9.9%), Amazonas (-5.3%), Paraná (-3.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (-3.7%) recorded the most pronounced reductions.  Ceará (2.9%), São Paulo (1.6%), which has approximately, 40% of the national industrial structure, and Northeast Region (0.1%), registered rates above the national average (-0.5%).

The evolution of the quarterly moving average index showed stability (0.1%) between August and September for the total of the national industry. In the analysis by regions, five among fourteen localities surveyed had positive results in this comparison, with Goiás (1.3%), São Paulo (0.7%) and Pará (0.4%) bringing the most pronounced gains.  On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (-1.4%), Pernambuco (-1.2%), Paraná (-1.1%) and Espírito Santo (-0.6%) had the most intense decreases in this comparison.  The other localities had results close to stability.

In relation to September of the previous year, the industrial activity showed growth in eight among fourteen surveyed localities, with São Paulo (8.5%) and Minas Gerais (6.5%) registering expansion above the national average (5.6%).  Still with positive results were Goiás (4.9%), Santa Catarina (4.1%), Paraná (3.1%), Amazonas (2.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.0%) and Northeast Region (0.7%).  The following localities had decrease in this indicator: Ceará (-0.2%), Pará (-0.4%), Bahia (-1.5%), Pernambuco (-1.8%), Espírito Santo (-2.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.4%).

In quarterly basis, the majority (twelve) among fourteen surveyed areas had expansion in the third quarter of the year, when compared to the same period of 2006.  Also, the majority (eight) of the localities maintained an ascending rhythm in relation to the result of the second quarter.  This acceleration is particularly pronounced in Espírito Santo where, between the indexes of the second and third quarters, the rate changed from 2.4% to 8.7%, followed by Goiás (from –2.8% to 1.6%) and Bahia (from –1.4% to 2.4%).  In the comparison with the immediately previous quarter, series seasonally adjusted, eight localities had positive results, with Espírito Santo (6.0%) and Amazonas (3.4%) reaching the highest rates, while Pernambuco (-3.5%) registered the highest loss.

In the indicator accumulated in the nine first months of the year, in relation to similar period of  2006, there was growth in all the localities, with the exception of Ceará (-0.4%).  The industry of Minas Gerais had major expansion (8.4%), supported, mainly, by increases in the manufacturing of automobiles.  With rates above the national average (5.4%) were also Rio Grande do Sul (7.3%), Paraná (6.8%) and Espírito Santo (5.8%).  These regional performances confirm the profile of growth in 2007, supported, mainly, in the production of durable consumer goods and capital goods, in the dynamism which came from the exports of commodities and in the effects of the recovery of the agricultural sector.  Growing below the national average were São Paulo (5.2%), Santa Catarina (5.1%), Pernambuco (4.9%), Pará (2.6%), Northeast Region (2.3%), Amazonas (1.8%), Goiás (1.5%), Rio de Janeiro (1.4%) and Bahia (1.0%).

 

AMAZONAS

In September, the industry of Amazonas decreased 5.3% in relation to the immediately previous month, in the series without seasonal influence, after increasing 7.5% in August.  In the comparison with similar month of the previous year, an increase of 2.1% was observed, a result considerably below the one of August (12.2%).  The indicators accumulated, in the year (1.8%) and in the last twelve months (0.5%), repeated the results of August.  In the third quarter of 2007, the production was 5.1% higher than the same period of 2006 and increased 3.4% in the comparison with the immediately previous month (seasonally adjusted series).

In the monthly index (2.1%), seven among eleven activities had positive rates, especially the two-digit growth of edition and printing (87.2%) and other transportation equipment (16.2%).  In these segments stood out respectively, the major manufacturing of DVDs and motorcycles. On the other hand, food products and beverages (-11.1%), electronic material and communication equipment (-6.7%) and metal products (-14.1%) brought the main negative contributions, due, mainly, to the decreases in the manufacturing of syrups for beverage elaboration; TV sets, radios; and razor blades and shaving equipment.

 In quarterly basis, a major dynamism from the second (2.8%) to the third quarter (5.1%) was observed, both comparisons with similar periods of 2006.  This trend reached seven among eleven surveyed segments, standing out the reduction in the rhythm of growth of electronic material and communication equipment, which changed from a reduction of 24.4% in the period April - June to –6.4% in the period July - September, and for the acceleration of edition and printing (from 70.2% to  83.2%).

In the indicator accumulated in the year (1.8%), six among eleven surveyed segments had positive results, with the most relevant results coming from edition and printing (76.2%), food products and beverages (15.4%), other transportation equipment (17.1%) and machines and equipment (57.4%).  In these segments stood out, the items DVDs; manufacturing of syrups and powder for beverage production; motorcycles; and microwave ovens.  On the other hand, electronic material and communication equipment (-23.0%) continued bringing the main negative influence on the overall average, still influenced by the decrease in mobile telephones and TV sets.  

The quarterly moving average index was almost stable (0.1%) between the quarters closed in August and September, after accumulating, in the last three months, gain of 3.4%.  In the comparison quarter with immediately previous quarter, series with seasonal adjustment, the industrial activity of Amazonas registered significant acceleration while changing from a decrease of 2.7% in the second quarter of 2007 to a growth of 3.4% in the third.

 

PARÁ

In September, the industry of Pará decreased 1.7% compared to the previous month, in the series with seasonal adjustment, after accumulating gain of 2.8% in two months of expansion.  In the comparison with similar month of the previous year, a negative rate also was recorded (-0.4%), while the indicators accumulated in the year (2.6%) and in the last twelve months (4.8%), even recording positive rates, showed indexes below the ones observed in August (3.0% and 6.0%, respectively).  In the third quarter of 2007, the production was greater in relation to the same period of 2006 (0.9%) as in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (2.2%) – series seasonally adjusted. 

In the comparison September 07/ September 06, the industry of the state had negative change of 0.4%, with four among six surveyed activities presenting negative performances.  The most pronounced negative performances came from food products and beverages (-18.4%) and wood (-14.9%), influenced by the decreases in the items frozen crustaceans; and plywood and sawed wood.  On the other hand, among the two activities which had increase, the main contribution came from mining and quarrying (4.9%), which increased, mainly in the extraction of iron ores.

In quarterly basis, the industry of Pará almost maintained constant the rhythm of production from the second (0.7%) to the third quarter of the year (0.9%), both comparisons with similar periods of the previous year.  Between these two periods, three among six surveyed activities showed major dynamism, especially the increases of basic metallurgy (from –1.4% to 2.4%) and cellulose and paper (from –3.7% to 9.8%), while food products and beverages (from -17.9% to –23.2%) and wood (-1.0% to –6.6%) had the major losses.

 

In the indicator accumulated January-September, the increase of 2.6% was supported in the expansion of mining and quarrying (9.0%), once manufacturing continued decreasing (-2.7%).  In this last one, the main negative result came from the food products and beverages sector (-16.3%), while basic metallurgy (4.4%) brought the only positive rate. 

Finally, the quarterly moving average indicator, which increased 0.4% between the quarters closed in August and September, confirmed the ascending trend which began in last May, accumulating in this period, a gain of 2.8%.  In the quarterly indicator compared to the immediately previous quarter, seasonally adjusted, increase in the industrial activity of Pará was also observed, increasing 2.2% from the second to the third quarter of 2007.  It is also worth mentioning that this positive result broke a sequence of three quarters with negative rates.

 

NORTHEAST

In September, the industrial production of the Northeast was stable compared to August (0.1%), series with seasonal adjustment, after a negative change of 0.2% in the previous month.  In the comparison with similar month of the previous year, there is an increase of 0.7%.  As a consequence, the indicator accumulated in the year was 2.3%, slightly below the result of August (2.5%).  The annualized rate, indicator accumulated in the last twelve months (2.4%), showed reduction in the rhythm of growth compared to the months of July (2.9%) and August (2.7%).  In the quarterly indexes, the production in the period July-September 2007 showed positive rates compared to the same quarter of the previous year (2.4%), as well as in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (1.7%) – series seasonally adjusted.

In the comparison with September 2006, the industry of the state registered increase of 0.7%, fifth consecutive positive result, with increase in the production in seven among eleven surveyed segments.  The major positive results on the overall result was observed in food products and beverages (3.7%), textiles (6.7%) and chemical products (1.9%), which brought increases in the production, mainly, of the items: powder milk, refined sugar; bath towel, mesh fiber thread; non-saturated ethylene  and rubber of styrene – butadiene, respectively.  On the other hand, petroleum refining and alcohol production (-4.9%) and cellulose and paper (-14.6%) brought the main negative results, in which stood out naphthas for petrochemical products, gasoline; and cellulose, respectively.
In quarterly basis, the industry of the Northeast showed major dynamism from the second (1.7%) to the third quarter (2.4%), supported on the increases of six among eleven surveyed sectors, especially chemical products which changed from –1.3% to 4.2%; and petroleum refining and alcohol production (from -5.3% to 1.8%). 

In the indicator accumulated January - September, the increase of 2.3% was supported in the positive performance of five among eleven surveyed activities, especially food products and beverages (8.0%), followed by non-metallic minerals (9.0%) and chemical products (2.4%).  In these groups, stood out the items soft drinks, toasted coffee; cement; and dyes and varnishes for construction, respectively.  On the other hand, the major negative results came from cellulose and paper (-7.0%), mainly influenced by the decrease in the manufacturing of cellulose and electric machines, material and equipment (-7.3%), due to the decrease in the item transformers.

The quarterly moving average indicator was almost stable (0.1%) between the quarters closed in August and September, after increasing for four consecutive months, accumulating in this period gain of 2.6%. Still in the series seasonally adjusted, the index quarter against immediately previous quarter, recorded increase of 1.7% from the second to the third quarter of 2007, after a rate of –0.1% in the previous period.

 

CEARÁ

In September, the industrial production of Ceará increased 2.9% in relation to the immediately previous month, after growing 1.5% in August (series with seasonal adjustment).  In relation to the same period of 2006, the monthly indicator (-0.2%) and indicator accumulated in the year (-0.4%) registered negative rates.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, while showing an increase of 1.7%, continued in a downward trend since last January (7.0%).  In the quarterly analysis, the period July – September of this year decreased compared to the same quarter of 2006 (-2.0%) as well as in relation to the immediately previous quarter (-1.8%) – series seasonally adjusted. 

In the comparison September 07/ September 06, the industry of the state changed negatively 0.2%, with decrease in five among ten surveyed sectors.  For this result, the third consecutive negative one, the main contributions came from apparel (-20.5%); electric machines, material and equipment (-32.0%); and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-21.5%). In these sectors, stood out, respectively, the decreases of the items long pants for feminine use and apparel for professional use; transformers; and gasoline and asphalt.  On the other hand, the major positive results came from  textiles (5.8%), due mainly to the increase in the manufacturing of mesh threads of artificial fibers and cotton; and food products and beverages (3.0%), due to the major production of toasted and beneficiated cashew nuts.

In quarterly basis, the industry of the state changed its performance from the second (2.8%) to the third quarter (-2.0%).  This trend can be observed in seven sectors, especially food products and beverages, most pronounced activity in the industry of the state, which changed from 14.4% to 0.5%; and apparel (from 4.9% to -18.9%).

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the industry of the state had negative change of 0.4%, with negative rates in five among ten surveyed sectors, being the major contributions on the overall average the sectors of petroleum refining and alcohol production (-34.1%); textiles (-5.6%) and electric machines, equipment and material (-28.3%).  On the other hand, the most relevant positive results were registered by food products and beverages (7.3%) and chemical products (19.0%).

Even with the positive result in the comparison September/August (2.9%), series with seasonal adjustment, the quarterly moving average indicator showed negative change of 0.3%, being therefore in a downward trend since last July.  In the comparison quarter/immediately previous quarter, reduction was also observed in the rhythm of industrial production of the state which decreased 1.8% in the third quarter of 2007.

 

PERNAMBUCO


In September, the industrial production of Pernambuco seasonally adjusted decreased 0.6% compared to the immediately previous month, after increasing 1.4% in August.  In the comparison with September 2006, there was a decrease of 1.8%, while the indicator accumulated in the year continued showing increase (4.9%).  The annualized rate, index accumulated in the last twelve months, had reduction in the rhythm of growth from August (5.8%) to September (5.1%).  In the quarterly analysis, the third quarter of 2007 increased compared to the same quarter of 2006 (1.8%), although it showed a decrease in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (-3.5%) – series seasonally adjusted.

In the monthly indicator, the industry of the state fell 1.8%, with negative rates in five among eleven surveyed sectors, breaking a series of twenty-two months of positive results.  The major negative contribution was observed in food products and beverages (-8.9%), due to the decrease in the production of crystallized sugar, beer and draft beer.  It is also worth mentioning the decreases of cellulose and paper (-16.6%), due to the lower manufacturing of sacks and bags made of plastic, and  kraft paper for packaging; and of metal products (-5.7%), due to the reduction in the production of aluminum cans , and steel wool.  On the other hand, the main positive result came from chemical products (17.0%), sector influenced, mainly, by the increase in the manufacturing of rubber of styrene – butadiene.

In the quarterly analysis, comparison with the same quarter of previous year, the local industry continued, for the ninth consecutive quarter, presenting positive rates.  From the second (7.5%) to the third quarter (1.8%), it could be observed a significant reduction in the rhythm of growth, as a consequence mainly  of the loss of dynamism in seven among eleven activities, especially food products and beverages, which changed from 4.7% to a decrease of 5.2%; and metal products (33.5% to -3.2%).

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the industry of Pernambuco increased 4.9%, with expansion in the production of seven among eleven activities.  The major positive influence on the overall result came from chemical products (21.3%), influenced, mainly, by the items rubber of styrene – butadiene and dyes and varnishes for construction.  Other relevant positive contributions came from food products and beverages (1.9%), rubber and plastic (12.4%) and metal products (9.4%).  In these segments, the highlights were ice creams and margarine; plastic films and garbage plastic bags; and aluminum cans for packaging.  On the other hand, the main negative result was registered by electric machines, equipment and material (-4.8%), due to the decrease in the production of electric batteries and cells.

Finally, the quarterly moving average indicator, which decreased 1.2% between the quarters closed in August and September, remained showing a downward trend since last June, accumulating, in this period, a loss of 3.7%.  The index quarter compared to immediately previous quarter seasonally adjusted also showed a negative rate (-3.5%) from the second to the third quarter.  It is also worth mentioning that this negative result broke eight quarters of consecutive positive rates in this type of comparison, period in which it accumulated gain of 9.4%.

 

BAHIA

In September, the industrial production of Bahia seasonally adjusted decreased 2.0% compared to the immediately previous month, after also decreasing in August (-2.8%). In the comparison with September 2006, the decrease was 1.5%, while in the indicator accumulated in the year it continued showing a positive result (1.0%).  The index accumulated in the last twelve months showed a slight deceleration in the rhythm of growth from August (1.2%) to September (0.9%).  In the quarterly analysis, positive rates may be observed compared to the same quarter of 2006 (2.4%), as in relation to the immediately previous quarter (3.0%) – series with seasonal adjustment.

In the monthly indicator (-1.5%), four among nine surveyed sectors had decrease in the production, with the main negative results coming from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-7.1%) and cellulose and paper (-15.3%).  In these segments, the highlights came from the decrease in the production of naphthas and diesel oil, in the first sector, and the lower manufacturing of cellulose and non-coveted paper, in the second.  On the other hand, the major positive influences on the overall result were observed in food products and beverages (9.3%) and chemical products (1.5%), due, respectively, to the increase in the manufacturing of powdered milk, beers and draft beers; non-saturated ethylene and low density polyethylene.

In quarterly basis, the third quarter of 2007, while increasing 2.4%, showed the major increment of the year, once the rates of the first and second quarters were, respectively, 2.0% and –1.4%, all comparisons with same periods of the previous year.  The gain of dynamism between the second and third quarter can be observed in five among nine activities, especially, for the two with the major participation in the industry of the state: chemical products, which changed from 3.6% to a growth of 4.6%; and petroleum refining and alcohol production (from -4.2% to 0.3%). 

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the industrial production of the state increased 1.0%, with positive results in five among nine investigated sectors.  The main contribution came from food products and beverages (12.5%), due to the increase in the manufacturing of flours and “pellets” of the extraction of soybean oil and crude soybean oil.  It is also worth mentioning the increase which came from chemical products (1.3%), due to the major production of non-saturated ethylene and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).  On the other hand, the major negative influences were observed in cellulose and paper (-7.2%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-2.2%), due, respectively to the lower production of cellulose and naphtha.

Finally, the quarterly moving average indicator was stable (0.0%) compared to the level of August, after accumulating gain of 3.4% between last April and August.  The quarterly index compared to the immediately previous quarter, seasonally adjusted, showed expansion of 3.0% in the third quarter of 2007,  reverting therefore a change of –1.8% observed in the previous quarter.

 

MINAS GERAIS

The industrial sector of Minas Gerais decreased 2.0% compared to the previous month, in the series without seasonal influence, after a sequence of four months of positive rates in this comparison, accumulating gain of 4.0% in this period.  In the comparison with September 2006, the increase was 6.5% and the indicator accumulated in the first nine months of the year, 8.4%.  The accumulated indicator in the last twelve months continued in a growing trend, changing from 7.5% in August to 7.7% in September.  In the quarterly indicators, the production in the period July-September 2007 increased compared to the same period of 2006 (9.4%) as well as in comparison with the immediately previous quarter (1.7%) – series seasonally adjusted. 

The increase of 6.5%, in the comparison with September 2006, was supported in the good performance of mining and quarrying (9.0%) and of the manufacturing industry (6.1%).  The positive performance of mining and quarrying, due, mainly to the major extraction of iron ores, brought the second major positive influence on the overall average.  In the manufacturing industry, where nine among twelve segments investigated had expansion, automotive vehicles (27.1%) brought the main positive highlight, followed by metal products (28.3%).  These segments were influenced, mainly, by increases in the items: automobiles and vehicles for merchandise transportation; and iron and steel structures, respectively.

On the other hand, the activities which most influenced negatively the overall result were petroleum refining and alcohol production (-18.6%), influenced by the reduction in diesel oil and gasoline as a consequence of a technical stoppage in September of the current year, and food products (-3.4%), due, mainly, of the decrease in the items mayonnaise and condensed milk.

In the analysis by quarters, it can be observed that the industrial sector of the state is maintaining positive results for twenty-one consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with same period of the previous year, longer period than the one observed in national level (sixteen quarters).  In this third quarter of 2007, the increase of 9.4% almost confirmed the rhythm of the second quarter, which had expansion of 9.9%.  Among the industrial segments, it is worth mentioning the loss of the dynamism in petroleum refining and alcohol production, whose index changed from 14.8% in the second quarter to 0.8% in the period July-September. 

In the indicator accumulated January-September, compared to same period of 2006, the industry of the state increased 8.4%, with eleven segments with growth.  Once again, automotive vehicles (20.0%) answered for the most important result.  It is also worth mentioning the favorable performance observed in mining and quarrying (10.0%) and in machines and equipment (21.5%). In these segments stand out, mainly, the increase in iron ores; and portable household electric articles. Only two activities had decrease in this comparison: non metallic minerals (-0.6%) and tobacco (-1.0%), influenced, mainly, by the reduction in the production of cement and cigarette, respectively.

Finally, the quarterly moving average index showed stability (-0.2%) among the quarters closed in August and September, after six positive rates, period which accumulated 6.5% of growth.  In the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (series with seasonal adjustment), the index for the third quarter, while growing 1.7%, maintained a sequence of fourteen positive rates in this comparison, accumulating gain of 27.4% in this period.

 

 ESPÍRITO SANTO

In September 2007, the industrial production of Espírito Santo fell 9.9% in relation to August, in the series without seasonal influence, after accumulating 15.6% in four months of growth.  In the comparison with same month of the previous year, a decrease was also observed (-2.1%), breaking twenty consecutive months of positive results.  The indicators accumulated, in the nine months of the year (5.8%) as well as in the last twelve months (6.8%), showed decrease compared to the results of August (6.9% and 8.1%, respectively).  In the third quarter of 2007, positive results were observed in the comparison with same quarter of the previous year (8.7%) and in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (6.0%) – series with seasonal adjustment.

In the comparison September 07/ September 06,  the industry of the state had decrease of 2.1%, influenced by the decrease in manufacturing (-8.3%), once mining and quarrying, supported by the major extraction of petroleum, had expansion of 12.5%.  In the first segment, the main negative contribution came from cellulose and paper (-26.5%), followed by food products and beverages (-20.2%), both influenced by technical stoppages of great companies. In these segments stood out, respectively, the decreases in the items cellulose and cookies.  On the other hand, the only activity of the manufacturing industry which increased the production was basic metallurgy (11.0%), as a consequence of the growth in the production of steel slugs, blocks and ingots.

In the analysis by quarters, it could be observed that the period July-September 2007 (8.7%) had a more pronounced rhythm than the two first quarters of 2007:  January-March (6.2%) and April-June (2.4%), all comparisons with same period of the previous year.   The major rhythm from the second to the third quarter showed the increase in mining and quarrying, which changed from 10.8% to 12.7%, as in manufacturing (from –1.2% to 6.8%).  In this last one, the more relevant gains were observed in basic metallurgy, which changed from –3.9% to 11.0%, and cellulose and paper (from –5.5% to 4.5%).

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the industry of the state had expansion of 5.8% compared to the same period of the previous year, with mining and quarrying (15.3%) bringing the main influence on the overall average.  In the industry of manufacturing, which showed a moderate growth (1.8%), the most relevant positive contribution came from food products and beverages (8.9%), influenced, mainly, by the increase in the items cookies.  On the other hand, the only negative result was observed in cellulose and paper (-0.7%), influenced by the decrease in cellulose.

Finally, the quarterly moving average index showed a slight decrease (-0.6%) between the quarters closed in September and August, breaking therefore an ascending trend observed since last June. The index quarter compared to immediately previous quarter seasonally adjusted showed expansion of 6.0% from the second to the third quarter of 2007, changing therefore, two consecutive quarters of decrease, period in which it accumulated loss of 1.4%.

 

RIO DE JANEIRO

In September, the index of industrial production of Rio de Janeiro seasonally adjusted had decrease of 3.7% compared to August, after a positive change of 0.4% in the previous month.  In the comparison with September 2006, a decrease was also observed (-2.4%).  With this, the indicator accumulated in the year was 1.4%, below the value observed in the index accumulated until August (1.9%). The annualized rate, indicator accumulated in the last twelve months (1.1%), repeated the results of August and July.  In the quarterly indicators, the production in the period July-September 2007 showed negative results compared to the same quarter of the previous year (-0.3%) as in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (-2.8%) – series seasonally adjusted.

In the comparison September 07/ September 06, the industrial sector of the state showed decrease of 2.4%, with decreases in manufacturing (-1.9%) as well as in mining and quarrying (-4.3%).  In the first sector, where eight among twelve groups had decrease, the main negative results were observed in the pharmaceutical industry (-29.6%) and in basic metallurgy (-9.9%).  It is also worth mentioning the negative contributions of food products (-8.6%) and edition and printing (-7.6%), influenced, respectively, by the decreases observed in fish products (preserves and processing); and CDs.  On the other hand, among the four segments of the manufacturing industry that expanded the production stood out automotive vehicles (38.3%), which continued to present a two-digit rate, followed by petroleum refining and alcohol production (7.4%). In these segments, stood out respectively, the items trucks, automobiles and buses; and diesel oil and gasoline. 

In the quarterly analysis, the industry of the state had a negative change of 0.3% in the period July-September, interrupting a sequence of fourteen quarters of positive results, all comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  The loss of dynamism from the second (3.1%) to the third quarter (-0.3%) showed, mainly, the reduction of the rhythm of growth of the manufacturing industry, which changed from 3.9% to 0.1%, standing out basic metallurgy (from 20.6% to –4.8%), other chemical products (from 16.8% to –5.5%) and edition and printing (from 16.7% to 0.6%).  On the other hand, pharmaceuticals, which changed from –23.4% to –6.1%, and automotive vehicles (from 17.4% to 31.7%), figure as the activities which most increased from the second to the third quarter.

The indicator accumulated in the year registered growth of 1.4%, supported in the expansion of the manufacturing industry (2.0%), once mining and quarrying remained with a negative rate (-0.9%) during 2007.  Eight among twelve surveyed segments had increase in the manufacturing industry.  The sector of basic metallurgy (11.6%) was the main positive result, followed by automotive vehicles (15.5%) and edition and printing (9.3%). In these segments stood out respectively the increases observed in tin plates and carbon steel bobbins; trucks and buses; and newspapers.  On the other hand, pharmaceuticals (-15.9%) continued bringing the major influence on the overall average. It is also worth mentioning the decreases observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-5.2%) and food products (-7.8%), influenced, mainly, by the lower production of gasoline and diesel oil; and fish products (preserves and processing).

Finally, the quarterly moving average indicator, which decreased 1.4% between the quarters closed in August and September, continued showing a downward trend since last June. In the indicator quarter compared to immediately previous quarter seasonally adjusted, it could also be observed reduction in the rhythm of industrial activity of the state which fell from 2.8% from the second to the third quarter of 2007.  It is also worth mentioning that this negative result interrupted four quarters of positive rates in this type of comparison, period in which it accumulated gain of 3.0%.

 

 SÃO PAULO

In September, the industrial production of São Paulo increased 1.6% compared to August, in the series with seasonal adjustment, second consecutive positive result, period in which it accumulated growth of 2.1%.  In relation to the indicators which compare similar periods of 2006, the results were: 8.5% compared to September 2006 and 5.2% in the indicator accumulated in the first nine months of the year.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, in an upward trend since June, changed from 3.9% in August to 4.5% in September.  In the quarterly indicators, the increase was 2.7% in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter – series seasonally adjusted – and 7.2% in relation to the third quarter of 2006.

In the comparison with September 2006 (8.5%), it could be observed the highest rate since December 2004 (11.9%), which had a generalized profile of growth reaching nineteen among twenty surveyed segments.  Among those which most influenced positively the overall performance stood out: automotive vehicles (18.4%), machines and equipment (18.2%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (17.8%).  In these sectors stood out the items automobiles; plant centers, spherical rolling bearings; diesel oil and gasoline.  On the hand, the only negative result came from cellulose and paper (-7.0%).

In the analysis by quarters, it could be observed that the industrial sector is sustaining positive results for sixteen consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with the same period of the previous year, and presented the major result since the 8.8% recorded in December 2004.  In the third quarter of 2007 (7.2%), the rhythm of expansion surpassed the one of the second quarter of the year (5.1%) in eleven segments, especially petroleum refining and alcohol production, which changed from –3.7% in the second quarter to a growth of 7.0% in the third quarter, automotive vehicles (from 2.5% to 9.2%) and other transportation equipment (from 11.7% to 34.3%).

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the increase of 5.2% was explained mainly, by the positive contributions of seventeen sectors, with the main highlights coming from machines and equipment (15.8%), electronic material and communication equipment (13.2%) and pharmaceuticals (9.9%).  The increases observed in the manufacturing of plant centers, harvesting machines; mobile telephones and commutation equipment; and remedies, explain, mainly, the positive performance of those segments.  On the other hand, electric machines, equipment and material (-6.8%), edition and printing (-1.7%) and cellulose and paper (-1.1%) brought the negative results, influenced, mainly, by the decrease in the production of transformers; magazines and printed matter; hygiene absorbents.

The quarterly moving average indicator, with increase of 0.7% in the margin, shows an upward trend since February, accumulating gain of 7.6%.  In the comparison quarter with immediately previous quarter (seasonally adjusted), the indicator for the period July-September was 2.7% and maintained a sequence of eight positive results, leading to a gain of 11.5% in this period.

 

PARANÁ

The industrial production of Paraná decreased 3.8% in September compared to August, already seasonally adjusted, after three consecutive months of increase, period in which it accumulated gain of 1.2%.  In the comparison with September 2006, the increase of 3.1% maintained a sequence of twelve consecutive positive rates in this comparison.  In the indicator accumulated in the year, the growth was 6.8%.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, in an upward trend since October of the previous year, changed from 5.1% in August of this year to 6.2% in September.  In the quarterly indicator, it could be observed growth of 6.7% compared to the third quarter of the previous year and decrease of 1.1% in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter.

In the monthly indicator, the production of the state increased 3.1%, with eight among fourteen surveyed activities showing positive rates.  The most important result in the formation of the overall rate came from automotive vehicles (56.0%) due, mainly, to the manufacturing of trucks.  In a lower degree, it is also worth mentioning the positive contributions of food products (8.4%) and machines and equipment (10.5%), especially crystallized sugar, refined soybean oil; and agricultural trucks, soft drinks and freezers.  On the other hand, the main negative influences came from edition and printing (-40.0%), cellulose and paper (-21.1%) and other chemical products (-16.9%) due mainly, to decrease in the items books and didactic printed matter; cardboards; adobes or fertilizers.

In quarterly basis, it could be observed the maintenance of positive results for four consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with similar period of the previous year.  The rhythm of expansion of the industry of the state in the third quarter of 2007 (6.7%) was above the one observed in the second quarter (5.8%).  Six segments followed this trend, especially automotive vehicles, which changed from 9.4% of increase in the period April-June to 46.2% in July-September and, in a lower degree, wood (from –10.5% to 3.8%). 

The indicator accumulated in the year showed increase of 6.8%, with nine segments showing increase. The main positive influences came from automotive vehicles (23.2%), machines and equipment (18.1%) and other chemical products (20.0%), due, mainly, to the products: automobiles and trucks; harvesting machines and agricultural tractors; and adobes and fertilizers.  On the other hand, the main negative results came from wood (-8.2%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-3.5%) and edition and printing (-4.9%), mainly, due to the decreases in the manufacturing of plywood and veneer plates; diesel oil; didactic books and printed matter.

 

With the negative result in the comparison September/August (-3.8%), series with seasonal adjustment, the quarterly moving average indicator showed decrease between the quarters closed in August and September.  Still in the seasonally adjusted series, it could also be observed reduction in the rhythm of industrial activity which decreased 1.1% in the comparison of the third quarter of 2007 with the immediately previous one, reverting therefore three consecutive quarters of positive rates, period in which it accumulated gain of 7.9%.

 

SANTA CATARINA

 The index of industrial production of Santa Catarina seasonally adjusted decreased 0.6% compared to August, after expansion of 1.1% in the previous month.  In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the sector increased 4.1%, ninth consecutive positive rate.  The indicator accumulated in the year also increased (5.1%).  The annualized rate, index accumulated in the last twelve months, maintained the trend of acceleration observed in the last months, changing from 3.8% in August to 3.9% in September.  In the quarterly indicators, the production in the period July - September 2007 increased compared to the same period of 2006 (5.8%), and was almost stable (-0.1%) in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter – series seasonally adjusted.

In the formation of the rate of 4.1%, compared to the same month of the previous year, positive rates could be observed in ten among eleven surveyed industrial activities, standing out the influence which came from textiles (9.5%), which had its major rate since March 2006 (10.0%), followed by machines and equipment (4.4%); electric machines, equipment and material (18.6%); and wood (10.2%).  In these sectors stood out the increases in the items: bath, face and hand towels; refrigerators and freezers; electric motors; and wood doors and windows, respectively.  On the other hand, the only negative result was observed in the sector of basic metallurgy (-1.2%).

In the third quarter of 2007, the industrial activity of the state increased 5.8%, fifth consecutive positive rate, with a slight reduction in the rhythm of growth compared to the period April-June (7.0%), both comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  For this trend contributed five industrial segments, being particularly important the one of machines and equipment, which reduced its rhythm of expansion while changing from 10.0% in the second quarter to 2.7% in the period July-September, and of food products (from 12.3% to 8.3%).

In the indicator accumulated in the nine first months of the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, the industry of the state had expansion of 5.1%, with positive rates in eight among eleven surveyed segments.  The major positive results in the overall result came from food products (9.1%) influenced, mainly, by the increases in the manufacturing of poultry meat, and machines and equipment (8,1%), due to the items refrigerators and freezers.  It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions which came from automotive vehicles (7.4%) and electric machines, equipment and material (11.9%).  Among the sectors which had reduction of production, basic metallurgy, with decrease of 1.4%, answered for the main negative result. 

Finally, the quarterly moving average indicator showed a negative change of 0.1% and was almost stable between the quarters closed in August and September.  The indicator quarter compared to immediately previous quarter, seasonally adjusted, also had a rate of –0.1% from the second to the third quarter of 2007, after growing for four consecutive quarters, period in which it accumulated a gain of 6.7%.

 

RIO GRANDE DO SUL

The industry of Rio Grande do Sul, in September, decreased 0.8% in relation to August, in the series without seasonal influence.  In the comparison with September 2006, the sector showed an increase of 1.0% and the indicator accumulated in the period January- September closed in 7.3%, below the value of January- August (8.1%).  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months (5.8%) was stable in relation to August.  In the analysis by sectors, the third quarter of 2007 surpassed in 5.3% the same quarter of 2006, but decreased 1.4% compared to the second quarter of 2007, in the seasonally adjusted series.

In the comparison with September 2006, the industry of the state had increase of 1.0%, with positive contributions of seven among fourteen surveyed segments.  Among these, the most significant were machines and equipment (29.4%), automotive vehicles (25.6%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (4.2%).  In these industries stood out the increases in the production of the items: air conditioning equipment and hydraulic tools; axis, semi-axis and other parts for transmission; and diesel oil, respectively.  On the other hand, the major negative influences came from food products (-7.1%), which had reduction in the production, mainly, cattle meats and rice semi-milled; and footwear and leather articles (-6.2%), due mainly to the lower production of leather footwear and synthetic material.

In quarterly basis, in the comparison with same periods of 2006, the industry of the state decelerated the rhythm of growth from the second (10.4%) to the third quarter (5.3%).  Nine among fourteen surveyed segments followed this trend, especially tobacco, which changed from –2.9% in the second quarter to -25.0% in the third; and petroleum refining and alcohol production (from 56.5% to 36.1%).

 The increase from 7.3%, in the accumulated indicator January-September, occurred, mainly due to the increases in nine among fourteen surveyed activities.  The major positive results in the overall result came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (36.3%), machines and equipment (31.5%) and automotive vehicles (29.2%), which registered increase in the production, mainly of naphtha for petrochemistry, gasoline; hydraulic tools of non-electric motor, harvesting machines; axis, semi-axis and other parts for transmission and automobiles, respectively.  On the other hand, the industries of footwear and leather articles (-9.6%) and tobacco (-6.6%) brought the major negative results.  In these segments prevailed the diminishments in the production of leather footwear and tennis; and processed tobacco, respectively.

Finally, with the data seasonally adjusted, it could be observed a decrease of 1.4% in the comparison of the third quarter with the immediately previous quarter.  Also decreased the quarterly moving average (-0.2%), between the quarters closed in August and September.  With this result, continued the downward trend, which began in June, in the rhythm of production of the industry of the state.

 GOIÁS

 In September, the industrial production of Goiás, seasonally adjusted, decreased 1.4% in relation to the previous month, after growing for two consecutive months, accumulating in this period gain of 5.6%.  In the comparison with similar period of the previous year, the production increased 4.9%, breaking five months of negative results.  The indicator accumulated in the year increased 1.5% and the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months 2.2%, both showed a major rhythm compared to the indexes of August (1.1% and 1.7%, respectively). The third quarter of 2007 closed with expansion compared to the same period of 2006 (1.6%), as in relation to the second quarter of 2007 (2.7%) – series with seasonal adjustment.

In the comparison with September of the previous year, the industry of the state increased 4.9% with growth in three among five surveyed sectors, especially food products and beverages (7.1%), segment of major participation in the industrial structure, followed by chemical products  (8.7%), influenced respectively, by the items mayonnaise and sugar; and adobes or fertilizers and remedies.  On the other hand, basic metallurgy (-8.1%) and non-metallic minerals (-9.0%) brought the only negative results, due, mainly, to the decrease in the production of iron niobium and cement, respectively.

In the analysis by quarters, the industrial activity of the state increased 1.6% in July-September, changing a decrease of 2.8% registered in the period April-June, both comparisons with the same quarters of 2006.  For this gain of dynamism, the sector of food products and beverages was the one that most contributed for this recovery, changing from a decrease of 5.3% to an increase of 3.8% between the two periods.

The index accumulated in the first nine months of the year had expansion of 1.5%, with mining and quarrying growing 11.6% and registering the major influence in the formation of the overall rate.  In these sectors, the products which most stood out were amianthus and crushed stones.  The industry of manufacturing (0.7%) had a more moderate participation, with main highlight of non-metallic minerals (9.0%).  On the other hand, chemical products (-1.9%) contributed with the major negative result.

Finally, the quarterly moving average index increased 1.3% in relation to the quarter closed in August.  In the end of the third quarter of the year, in relation to the immediately previous quarter, in the series without seasonal influence, the industry of the state increased 2.7%, its best result in 2007. The previous results had been, January-March (1.4%) and April-June (-3.8%).
