Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of October was 0.30%

The rate was above the value of September (0.18%).  In the index accumulated in the year 2007, IPCA summed 3.30%, more than in the same period of 2006 (2.33%). The seasonal products brought influence on the index of the month, and the fruits (7.05%) brought the major individual contribution: 0.06 percentage points.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months was 4.12%, close to the rate of 4.15% registered in the previous 12 months.  In October 2006 the index had been 0.33%.

Even with the decrease of 12.84% in the price of the liter of milk, the group food products and beverages increased again between September and October (from 0.44% to 0.52%).  Meats (1.83%), beans (15.85%, the carioca type, and 9.98%, the black type) and potatoes (14.97%) also influenced the IPCA.

Pasteurized milk (-12.84%) brought the lowest individual contribution: -0.17 percentage points. Other products also turned cheaper.  The highlights were the following products:

Non-food products changed from 0.11%, in September, to 0.24%, in October. The group apparel (from 0.45% to 0.72%) increased as a consequence of the new collection of clothes and footwear in the market.

Gasoline after a decrease of -0.79% in September had a hike of 0.36% in October.  This occurred mainly due to the municipality of Goiânia (12.79%) and the metropolitan area of Salvador (3.45%), which recorded increases.  Alcohol had, on the average, decrease of -0.90%, even with the increase of prices in Goiânia (20.42%).  Vehicle gas increased 1.04% as a consequence of the hikes of 2.97% in Rio de Janeiro and 3.85% in Fortaleza.

Medicines also increased (from 0.22%, in September, to 0.36%, in October), with the major change registered in the metropolitan area of Belém (1.12%).  The increase of 6.46% registered by cement stood out.  It is also worth mentioning the increase of 1.30% in the services of hairdressing and 1.16%, in perfumes.

Line telephony changed 0.11% in October as a consequence of the average readjustment of 1.80% in the value of the minute in effect in all the regions since the first day of the month, and also as a consequence of the switch of pulse to minute, in the areas of Porto Alegre, Brasília, Curitiba and Goiânia.

Among the indexes by areas in October, the highest one was registered in Goiânia (0.95%), where gasoline (12.79%) and alcohol (20.42%) stood out.  The lowest one was recorded in Curitiba (0.16%).

The IPCA is calculated by the IBGE since 1980.  It refers to families with monetary income, from any source, ranging from 1 to 40 minimum wages, and includes nine metropolitan areas of the country, besides the municipality of Goiânia and Brasília.  To calculate the index of this month, prices collected between August 28 and September 27 (reference period) were compared to those charged between July 28 and August 27 (base period).

 

INPC changed 0.30% in October

The result of the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) also was above the one of September (0.25%).  With the index of October, the index accumulated in the year 2007 reached 3.70%, considerably above the rate of the same period of 2006 (1.75%).  The index accumulated in the last 12 months was 4.78%, lower than the result of the 12 immediately previous months (4.92%).  In October 2006, the INPC had been 0.43%.

In October, food products changed 0.55%, while non-food products increased 0.20%.  The major index by area was registered in Belém (0.82%).  The lowest result was observed in Curitiba (0.06%).

The INPC is calculated by the IBGE since 1979 and it refers to families, headed by a salaried worker, with monetary income ranging from one to six minimum wages.  It includes nine metropolitan areas, besides the municipality of Goiânia and Brasília.  To calculate the index of the month, prices collected from August 28 to September 27 (reference period) were compared to prices charged from July 28 to August 27 (base period).
