Unemployment rate remained at 9.5% in August

There was stability in relation to July (9.5%) and decrease compared to August last year (10.6%). The employed population (21.0% million) increased by 1.0% in relation to July and by 2.9% in comparison with August 2006.

The number of persons looking for a job (2.2 million) remained stable in relation to the previous month and fell by 8.4% in comparison with July 2006. The number of workers with a formal contract increased by 2.5% in relation to July 2007 and by 7.0% in comparison with August 2006. For the third consecutive month, in comparison with the previous year, the real average income of workers decreased (R$1,109,40). In comparison with August 2006, income increased by 1.2%.

 

 

 

UNEMPLOYMENT

 

In August 2007, the estimated unemployment rate for the group of six areas surveyed was 9.5%; the rate was stable in comparison with last July, and decreased by 1.1 percentage points in comparison with August 2006 (10.6%).

 

By area, in comparison with July 2007, there was stability in all the metropolitan areas. In comparison with August 2006, there were lower results in three areas: Recife, in which the rate decreased by 2.0 percentage points, Belo Horizonte (by 1.3 percentage points) and São Paulo (by 1.5 percentage points).

 

The Monthly Employment Survey showed there was stability of the number of unemployed persons (2.2 million) in comparison with the previous month and in relation to August 2006, there was decline by 8.4% in the group of six areas surveyed.

 

In the analysis by area, in relation to last July, there was stability of this estimate in all the areas surveyed. In comparison with August 2006, there was decrease of this estimate in three metropolitan areas: Recife (13.4%), Belo Horizonte (13.2%) and São Paulo (10.9%).

 

Among the unemployed, 57.7% were women, 7.9% were up to 17 years of age, 37.7% were between 18 and 24 years of age, 47.9% were between 25 and 49 years of age, and 6.6% were between 50 years of age or over.  

 

In August 2005, 45.7% of the unemployed persons had finished at least high school. In August 2006, 46.4%; in the last survey, 50.3%.

 

 

EMPLOYED PERSONS

 

 

The estimated number of employed persons in August 2007, 21.0 million, reflected increase in comparison with the previous month (1.0%). In relation to August 2006, the level of occupation increased by 2.9%, that is, about 594 thousand jobs were created.

 

By area, in relation to July 2007, the number of employed persona did not have any significant change in any of the areas surveyed, although the tendency to increase was evident in all of them. In the annual comparison, the metropolitan areas of Salvador (6.2%), Belo Horizonte (3.7%), São Paulo (3.3%) and Porto Alegre (2.5%) had positive change in this type of comparison.

 

Considering the level of occupation (51.9%), the results indicate increase in comparison with July 2007 (0.4 percentage points) and stability in relation to August last year in the group of six areas. By area, in relation to the previous month, there was no significant change of this indicator in any of the areas surveyed. However, in comparison with August last year, there was change only in the metropolitan area of Salvador (1.3 percentage points).

 

 

The survey showed that men made up 55.4% of the employed population, whereas women, 44.6%. The population between 25 and 49 years of age accounted for 63.6% of the overall number of employed persons. The percentage of employed persons in August 2007 with 11 or more years of schooling was 53.7%.

 

The size of enterprises was another feature covered by the survey, which estimated as 57.5% the percentage of persons working in enterprises with 11 or more persons. In enterprises with 6 to 10 employed persons, this proportion was 6.2%,whereas in those with up to 5 employed persons, the proportion was 36.3%. 

 

According to the Monthly Employment Survey, 50.3% of the employed population worked in August 2007, a total of 40 to 45 hours per week and about 32.0% worked over 45 hours per week. On average, according to data from the survey, 68.3% of the workers in the six metropolitan areas had had that job for at least 2 years; 11.3%, for between 1 year and less than 2 years; 18.6% for between one month and one year, and only 1.8% had been in that position for at least 1 month.

 

Groups of Activity

 

Mining and quarrying industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (17.1% of the PO) It remained stable in relation to both July 2007 and August 2006, in the group of six areas. In the analysis by area, there was stability in the monthly comparison, and hike of 9.1% in Porto Alegre, in relation to August 2006.

 

 

Construction (7.2% of the PO) In the group of six areas, in the monthly comparison, there was stability in relation to August 2006, with hike of 4.9%. In the analysis by area, there was no change in this group in relation last July, and, in the annual comparison, there was hike of 15.0% in the metropolitan area of São Paulo.

 

 

Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels (19.3% of the PO) In the group of six areas, in both comparisons, there was stability. In the analysis by area there was hike of 5.5% in Belo Horizonte, in relation to last July. In comparison with August 2006, there was significant hike (16.2%) in Salvador, and also in Belo Horizonte (8.2%).

 

Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (15.3% of the PO) There were hikes both in the monthly comparison (3.1%) and in the annual comparison (11.7%) in the group of six areas. In the analysis by area, there was stability in comparison with the previous month. In comparison with August last year, there were hikes in Recife (22.8%), Belo Horizonte (10.5%), Rio de Janeiro (8.2%) and São Paulo (15.5%).

 

Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (15.7% of the PO). In the group of six areas and also in each one of them, in both comparisons, there was stability.

 

Domestic services (8.2% of the PO). There was stability in both periods of comparison. By area, there was stability in relation to the previous month, and in relation to August 2006, there was increase in Recife (15.0%).

 

 

Other services (Lodging and feeding, transportation, storage and communications, urban cleaning, associate, recreational, cultural and sports activities, personal services) (16.6% of the PO) There was increase in relation to the previous month (2.9%) and stability in relation to August 2006. By area, in the monthly comparison, there were hikes in Rio de Janeiro (5.7%) and Porto Alegre (7.1%). In relation to August 2006, there was increase in Porto Alegre (9.7%).

 

 

Categories of participation in the job market

 

Workers WITH a formal contract in the formal sector (except domestic workers, military and civil servants, and others). In relation to July 2007, the number of workers in this category of participation in the job market increased by 2.5%. In comparison with August 2006, there was also positive change by 7.0%, that is, increase of about 590 thousand persons working with a formal contract signed in one year.

In the analysis by area, in the monthly comparison, there was hike in Rio de Janeiro (4.4%), São Paulo (2.6%) and Porto Alegre (3.8%); in the other ones there was stability. In relation to August 2006, there were also positive changes in all the areas: Recife (13,4%), Salvador (8,7%), Belo Horizonte (10,0%), Rio de Janeiro (6,2%), São Paulo (5,9%) e Porto Alegre (6,2%).  

 

Workers WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military and civil servants, and others) (13.6% of the PO) The number of workers in this category remained stable in relation to August 2006; there was decrease by 6.2%in the group of six areas. In the analysis by area, there was also stability in all the metropolitan areas, in comparison with last July; except for Belo Horizonte, there was increase by 8.6%, and, in relation to August 2006, the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro faced decrease by 11.6% in this estimate.

 

 

Own-account workers (19.0% of the PO) In relation to last July, this number of workers did not undergo any changes; in comparison with the same month in the previous year, there was increase by 3.5% in the group of six areas. In the analysis by area, there was not change in relation to the previous month. In the annual comparison, there were increases in two areas:  Salvador (11.0%) and São Paulo (10.1%).

 

 

ECONOMICALY ACTIVE PERSONS

 

 

August, the number of economically active persons (employed or unemployed and looking for a job) was 23,3 million, for the group of six areas surveyed. Here was increase in comparison with the previous month (1.1%) and also in comparison with August 2006 (1.7%, approximately, 390 thousand persons more).

 

In the analysis by area, in comparison with last July, workforce remained stable in all the metropolitan areas, except in Rio de Janeiro, where the indicator increased by 1.6%. In comparison with August 2006, there were positive changes in Salvador (7.0%) and Belo Horizonte (2.3%).

 

In the analysis by sex, in August 2007, men continued to make up most of the economically-active population (54.2%).

 

The economically-active population, by age groups, was distributed as follows: 2.2% were between 15 and 17 years of age; 17.5% were between 18 and 24 years of age; 62.1%, between 25 and 49 years of age, and 18.0% were 50 years of age or over. The group of youngsters aged 16-24 made up, in August 2007, 19.4% of the economically-active population.

 

 

AVERAGE REAL INCOME

 

The survey estimated that in August 2007, in the group of six areas, the average real income usually earned by workers in the six metropolitan areas was R$1,109.40; this figure reflects decrease (0.5%) in comparison with the previous month. In comparison with August 2006, there was stability (1.2%).

 

In the analysis by area, in relation to last July, there was recovery in the metropolitan areas of Recife (4.5%) and Belo Horizonte (0.7%). There was decrease in Salvador (0.4%), Rio de Janeiro (3.0%) and Porto Alegre (0.9%). In the annual comparison, there was increase in the following metropolitan areas: Recife (6.6%), Salvador (2.0%), Belo Horizonte (1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (3.9%) and Porto Alegre (2.5%). The opposite occurred in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, where income decreased (0.9%).

 

 

Income of categories of participation in the job market - MONTHLY comparison

 

Workers with a formal contract in the private sector There was decrease by 1.3% of the estimated average income (R$1,086.80) in August 2007. In the metropolitan areas of Recife (2.1%), Rio de Janeiro (1.5%) and São Paulo (2.5%), there was decline of income. In Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre, there was increase (by 3.1% and 0.5%, respectively).

 

Workers without a formal contract in the private sector – There was stability of the average income, which was estimated to be R$ 748,30 in August 2007. n the metropolitan areas of Recife (1.0%), Salvador (11.2%), Belo Horizonte (7.9%), Rio de Janeiro (1.2%) and Porto Alegre (2.6%), there were decreases in income. In São Paulo, there was hike (4.2%).

 

Own –account workersThere was decrease by 4.8%, and the estimated average income was R$ 888,30 in August 2007. In the metropolitan areas of Belo Horizonte (9.5%), Rio de Janeiro (9.3%), São Paulo (4.5%) and Porto Alegre (3.5%), there were losses. In Recife (16.6%) and Salvador (5.8%) there was increase of income.

 

 

 

Income of categories of participation in the job market - ANNUAL comparison

 

Workers with a formal contract in the private sector (R$ 1,086.80) – There was decrease (1.5%) in relation to August 2006. There were decreases in the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro (1.3%), São Paulo (2.1%) e Porto Alegre (0.4%), increases in Recife (0.5%) and Belo Horizonte (1.5%), and stability in Salvador (1.5%).

 

Workers without a formal contract in the private sector (R$ 748.30) – There was increase of income by 1.6%. Increases occurred in Recife (11.2%), Rio de Janeiro (4.3%), de São Paulo (1.6%) and Porto Alegre (7.7%). There were decreases in Salvador (9.7%) and Belo Horizonte (4.1%).

 

Own-account workers (R$ 888.30) – There was recovery by 5.2%. There were increases in Recife (37.7%), Salvador (3.8%), Rio de Janeiro (1.3%), São Paulo (6.6%) and Porto Alegre (5.4%). There was decrease in Belo Horizonte (3.8%).

 

 

 

Analysis of the Average Income of Workers by Group of Activity

 

Compared to July 2007:

 

There was increase in the following groups of activity: mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas an water (1.7%) and trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels (0.4%).

 

There was increase in the following groups of activity: construction (-2.9%); services rendered to enterprises, real estate activities and financial mediation (-0.7%), and education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (-3.4%).

 

There was stability in domestic services and other services.

Average Real Household Income Per Capita

 

In August 2007, the average real household income per capita was estimated to be R$ 700.01; there was stability in relation to last June, with rise of 1.0% in comparison with August 2006.

 

In the analysis by area, there were decreases in Rio de Janeiro (-4.3%) and Salvador (-0,4%) and recovery in Belo Horizonte (2.8%), São Paulo (1.1%), and Recife and Porto Alegre, both with (0.4%).

 

In comparison with August 2006, there was recovery in almost all the metropolitan areas: Recife (0.7%), Salvador (3,5%), Belo Horizonte (5.6%), Rio de Janeiro (3.9%) and Porto Alegre (2.5%). In São Paulo, there was decrease (2.2%).

 

 

Volume of Real Income of the Employed Population

 

The volume of real income of the employed population of August 2007 (which refers to July 2007) was estimated by the Monthly Employment Survey as R$ 23.2 billion. There was increase in relation to the previous month of June (1.0%) and significant increase (3.8%) in comparison with July last year.

 

In the monthly comparison, there were rises in Recife (3.9%), Belo Horizonte (0.8%) and São Paulo (2,5%) and decline in Salvador (-0.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.4%). In Porto Alegre, there was stability. In comparison with July 2006, there was recovery of income in all the metropolitan areas: Belo Horizonte (5.9%), Porto Alegre (5.6%), Rio de Janeiro (5.4%), Recife (4.3%), Salvador (3.0%) and in São Paulo (2.1%).

 

NON-ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE PERSONS (PNEA)

 

In August, the non-economically active population (persons at ten years of age who were not employed and were not looking for a job), not classified by the survey as employed or unemployed, was estimated to be 17,3 million. This indicator decreased by 1.2% in relation to the previous year and increased in comparison with August last year (2.6%). 

 

 

In this group, 63.8% were women and 36.2% were men, whereas among economically-active persons, women made up 45.8%, and men, 54.2%.

 

 

Persons under 18 years of age and over 50 years of age amounted to 32.1% and 38.0%, respectively, of the non-economically active population. However, they represented only 2.5% and 18.0%, respectively, of this group.

 

 

In the group of non-economically active persons, 13.5% wanted and were available to take up a job if they found one. Nevertheless, only 5.3% had worked or looked for a job in the previous year (marginally connective to the non-economically active population). In relation to schooling, 78.4% had not finished high school.
