IPCA changed by 0.47% in August

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) changed by 0.47% in August, and reached a result twice as high as the July figure (0.24%). The index accumulated in the year was 2.80%, that is, above that of the same period in 2006 (1.78%).

In the last twelve months, the change was 4.18%, a little higher than the rate of 3.74% registered in the immediately previous twelve months. In August 2006, the index was 0.05%.

 

In August, the price of food products rose by 1.39%, having accounted for 62% of the monthly index. The item milk and dairy products rose by 5.77%, and contributed 0.13 percentage points to the index, even having fallen in relation to July (11.31%).

 

In terms of non-food products, there was rise by 0.22% in August and, this way, the contribution of this item was 0.18 percentage points. In July, non-food products faced deflation by -0.03%, with fall of electricity bills in the metropolitan area of São Paulo.

  

Fixed telephony, whose fares rose by 1.14% in august, on average, was influenced by the readjustment which occurred in the price of subscriptions and in the fares from fixed to mobile telephones, which went into effect on July 21. Other important contributions to the August IPCA were: car repair (1.41%), domestic workers (0.69%), health insurance (0.56%), school fares (0.49%) and urban bus fares (0.43%). The major influence on urban bus fares (0.43%) came from the metropolitan area of Belém, in which the rates were readjusted on August 07th 

 

Gasoline represented the biggest fall in the month, with a result of -0.89%, having contributed by -0.04% to the index. The liter of alcohol fell by 3.76%.

The IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980 and it refers to families with monetary income, from any source, ranging from 1 to 40 minimum salaries.  It encompasses nine metropolitan areas of the country, besides the municipalities of Goiânia and Brasília.

 

INPC changed by 0.59% in August

 

The National Consumer Price Index (INPC) changed by 0.59% in August, a result below the July figure (0.32%). The index accumulated in the year was 3.13%, above the rate obtained last year (1.16%). The result for the index accumulated in the last twelve months was 4.82%, slightly above the result of 4.19% relative to the immediately previous twelve months. In August 2006, the index was -0.02%.

 

In the monthly index, food products changed by 1.52%. Non-food products rose by 0.23%. The highest index by area was registered in Belém (1.05%) and the lowest result was that of Curitiba (0.28%).

 

         


The INPC has been calculated by IBGE since 1979; it refers to families headed by a salaried worker and with monetary income ranging from 01 to 06 minimum salaries. It encompasses nine metropolitan areas of the country, besides the municipalities of Goiânia and Brasília.  To calculate the index of the month, prices collected in the period July 28th to August 27th (reference) were compared to those charged from June 29th to July 27th (base).
