As a result of combined efforts with associations and entities in the fields of health and demography in Brazil, IBGE’s National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE) is currently organizing the seminar “Health, Sexual and Reproductive Rights: elements for public policies”. The event will take place on the 24th of August, from 2 to 6 pm, at Pedro Calmon Hall, at the Institute of Economics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Together with IBGE in this enterprise are: the Brazilian Association for Graduate Studies in Collective Health (ABRASCO), the Brazilian Association for Population Studies (ABEP), Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), the National Commission on Population and Development (CNPD), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Institute of Economics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IE/UFRJ). Among the participants of the event are the Minister of Health Affairs, José Gomes Temporão, and the Minister of the Special Secretariat of Policies for Women, Nilcea Freire.

The seminar aims at supporting public policies and measures in defense of sexual and reproductive rights, opposed to religious fundamentalism and moral conservative thought which threatens the actions of Lay State. Matters such as the guarantee of family and reproductive planning within the realm of global and integral health services; the control of sexually-transmitted diseases; the control of the AIDS epidemic; abortion as an issue of public health. These topics, in fact, are defined in the Brazilian Constitution, in the Law of Family Planning and in International Conventions.

Researches from universities and from society in general will deliver presentations about topics related to the theme of the event. The program includes four presentations: Policies of Reproductive Planning in Brazil: Suzana Cavenaghi – IBGE/ABEP; Abortion in Brazil - Débora Diniz - Anis/UnB; The current status of STD in Brazil: Francisco Inácio Bastos – Fiocruz; Reproductive Rights in Brazil - Margareth Arilha – CCR.

The seminar is open to the public and will be broadcast at real time by the site of the Institute of Communication and Technological and Scientific Information on Health (Incit/Fiocruz), available at : http://www.cict.fiocruz.br/cgi/cgilua.exe/sys/start.htm. The Institute of Economics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro  (IE/UFRJ) is located at  250, Pasteur Avenue, in Rio de Janeiro.
