Unemployment rate of June was 9.7%

It was the first decrease in the indicator this year (0.4 percentage points in relation to May), after three months of stability in 10.1%. In relation to June 2006, the decrease was even higher: 0.7 percentage points.

The level of employment 1 was 51.3% in June, 0.5 percentage points above the one of May and stable in the comparison with June of the previous year.  Regarding the unemployed population, 2.2 million persons, the number did not change in both comparisons.

 

The average real income of the employed persons in the six surveyed metropolitan areas2  (R$ 1,119.20) had slight decrease in relation to May (-0.5%), but, compared to June 2006, it continued to increase (2.7%), although in a lower intensity. There was reduction in the income of employees with a formal contract (R$ 1,077.50) compared to May (-2.7%) and June 2006 (-2.1%).

 

The overall actual average income of the employed population3 was estimated in R$ 22.9 billion, a hike of 0.7% in relation to May. Compared to June 2006, there also was hike (5.9%).  Regarding the average household real income per capita (R$ 700.21) it was stable in relation to May and increased by 3.3% when compared to June of the previous year.

In the comparison with May, only the metropolitan area of São Paulo had change in the rate of unemployment4, which fell 1.0 percentage points.  In relation to June 2006, the major decrease (2.8 percentage points) occurred in the metropolitan area of Recife, where the rate changed from 15.4% to 12.6%.

 


Regarding the unemployed population (PD), São Paulo also registered reduction (-8.0%) in the comparison with May.  In the comparison with June 2006, besides the decrease in the number of unemployed persons in Recife (-21.0%), there was increase in this group in the metropolitan area of Salvador (16.6%).

 


Among the unemployed persons, 19.8% were searching for their first job and 25.1% were the main responsible in the family.  Also in this group, 51.2% had at least concluded the secondary instruction – proportion higher than the one recorded in June 2006 (47.7%) and June 2005 (46.6%).

 


Employed population (PO) increases in the comparisons with May 2007 and June 2006

 

 

The number of employed persons, estimated in 20.8 million in June, presented hikes of 1.3%, in the comparison with May and 3.2% (which equals to 646 thousand persons) in relation to June  2006.

 

In the analysis by areas, in relation to May, this total had significant changes only in the metropolitan area of São Paulo (2.1%); in the others, the scenario was of stability.  In the annual comparison (June 2007/ June 2006), the metropolitan areas of Salvador (6.2%), Belo Horizonte (3.0%), Rio de Janeiro (2.5%) and São Paulo (4.1%) had growth.

 

Considering the level of employment (51.3% for the total of the areas), in the comparison with May, also only São Paulo had increase (1.0 percentage points). In relation to June 2006, Salvador (1.6 percentage points) and São Paulo (1.0 percentage points) had significant changes.

 

Analysis by groups of activities


 

The group of activity trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail fuel trade, responsible for 19.6% of the employed persons, had increase in the number of employed persons in relation to May (3.0%). Compared to June of the previous year, three groups had increase: construction (5.2%), services rendered to companies, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (10.2%) and domestic services (5.8%).

 

In the analysis by areas, in relation to May of this year, São Paulo had increase of 8.0% among the employed persons in trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail fuel trade. Also registered growth of 6.1% the group services rendered to companies, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation.  In this same group of activity, the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro had decrease of 5.5% among the employed persons, in the comparison June/ May 2007. Still in this comparison, the metropolitan area of Recife had growth of 15.9% in the employed population in domestic services.

 

In relation to June 2006, the metropolitan areas of Belo Horizonte (15.5%) and São Paulo (14.4%) had increase in the number of employed persons in the group construction. In the same comparison, Salvador (16.4%) and São Paulo (7.0%) registered increase of the employed population in the group trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail fuel trade. The number of employed persons in the group services rendered to companies, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation increased in the metropolitan areas of Recife (19.8%), Rio de Janeiro (7.8%) and São Paulo (11.8%). Recife (41.1%) and São Paulo (9.6%) also registered increase in the number of employed persons in domestic services, in the comparison June 2007/ June 2006.

 

The employed population continued stable in both comparisons (monthly and annual), for the total metropolitan areas and in each one surveyed separately, in the following groups of activity: mining and quarrying, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (16.9% of the employed population); education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (15.4% of the employed population); and other services - lodging, feeding, transportation, storage and communication, urban sanitation, associative, leisure, cultural, sport activities and personal services, 16.6% of the employed population.

 

Own-account workers increase by 2.6% in relation to May


 

In relation to May, the number of own-account workers increased by 2.6%.  In relation to June 2006, increases were registered among employees with a formal contract (4.9%, which equals to approximately 403 thousand persons) and own-account workers (5.5%).

 

In the analysis by areas, in relation to May, only Rio de Janeiro (-3.2%) had decrease in the number of employed persons with a formal contract – this number was stable in the other metropolitan areas.  Among the own- account workers, only São Paulo (5.3%) had increase.

 

In the comparison with June 2006, Recife (6.1%), Salvador (11.0%) Belo Horizonte (6.6%) and São Paulo (4.7%) registered increase among the employed persons with a formal contract; and own-account workers increased in the metropolitan areas of Salvador (11.0%) and São Paulo (13.7%).

 

The number of employed persons without a formal contract was stable in all the metropolitan areas, in relation to May as well as in the comparison with June of the previous year.
 

 

In the comparison with May, average real income increases in Rio and in Porto Alegre

 

 

In relation to May, there was recovery of the average real income5  in the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro (1.8%) and Porto Alegre (0.6%); decline in Salvador (4.9%) and São Paulo (1.8%); and stability in Recife and Belo Horizonte.  In the annual comparison (June 2006), the performance was of increase in Salvador (7.3%), Belo Horizonte (2.3%), Rio de Janeiro (8.8%) and Porto Alegre (6.5%).  In Recife and São Paulo, the income decreased (-4.1% and -1.0%, respectively).

 

The employees without a formal contract (average income of R$ 768.50 in June) and own-account workers (R$ 949.80) had gains compared to May (2.6% and 3.4%, respectively). In the comparison with June of the previous year, their purchasing power also increased (9.4% and 10.1%, respectively). The military and public servants of the Single Juridical Regime (R$ 1,946.50) had decrease in the income (-0.8%) in relation to May and increase of 5.4% compared to June 2006.

 

In the comparison with May, the metropolitan areas of Recife (-1.6%), Salvador (-3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.7%), São Paulo (-4.2%) and Porto Alegre (-1.1%) had decreases in the income of employees with a formal contract; while Belo Horizonte had stability.  Among employees without a formal contract, there was decrease in the income in Recife (-0.7%), Salvador (-6.0%) and Porto Alegre (-7.7%); and increase in Belo Horizonte (1.1%), Rio de Janeiro (4.2%) and São Paulo (4.0%). In the same comparison,  own-account workers of the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro (7.3%), São Paulo (1.4%) and Porto Alegre (5.8%) had gain in the purchasing power; in Recife (-0.4) and Belo Horizonte (-1.9%), the scenario was of decrease; and in Salvador, stability was observed.

 

In relation to June 2006, the employees with a formal contract of the metropolitan areas of Salvador (-0.8%), Belo Horizonte (-0.6%) and São Paulo (-4.4%) had losses in the income.  In Recife (2.4%) and Porto Alegre (3.9%), the income had increase; and in Rio de Janeiro the scenario was of stability. Among the employees without a formal contract, there was gain of income in all the surveyed areas: Recife (6.9%), Salvador (6.6%), Belo Horizonte (13.4%), Rio de Janeiro (8.7%), São Paulo (9.8%) and Porto Alegre (3.3%).  Regarding the own account workers, there was recovery in the income in the metropolitan areas of Recife (5.1%), Salvador (7.1%), Rio de Janeiro (21.8%), São Paulo (5.1%) and Porto Alegre (6.6%); and stability in Belo Horizonte.

 

In the comparison with May 2007, it could be observed for the real average income usually earned:

 

Hike in construction (0.8%); services rendered to companies, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (1.6%); domestic services (0.8%); and other services (1.9%).

 

Decrease in mining and quarrying, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (-2.1%); trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail fuel trade (-1.8%); and education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (-1.5%).

 

In the comparison with June 2006, it could be observed for the real average income usually earned:

 

Hike in trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail fuel trade (9.0%); services rendered to companies, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (2.0%); education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (4.5%); domestic services (4.6%); and other services (3.8%).

Decrease in construction (-2.9%).

 

Stability in mining and quarrying, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water.

 

Average household real income per capita6  increased in 3 among 6 surveyed areas


In relation to May, two metropolitan areas had decrease in the household income per capita: Salvador (-2.0%) and São Paulo (-1.8%). There was recovery in Belo Horizonte (0.9%), Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre (each one with 2.7%).

 

In the comparison with June 2006, only Recife had decrease (-6.3%) in this indicator.  The household income per capita increased in Salvador (7.6%), Belo Horizonte (3.2%), Rio de Janeiro (9.8%) and Porto Alegre (4.1%); in São Paulo the scenario was of stability.

 

 

In relation to May, the overall actual real income of employed persons fell only in Salvador

 

Regarding the overall actual real income of the employed population, the scenario in June was of increase, in the comparison with May, in Belo Horizonte (2.3%), Rio de Janeiro (0.9%), São Paulo (0.6%) and Porto Alegre (2,9%).  There was decrease in Salvador (-4.1%), and in Recife, the overall income was stable.

 

In relation to June of the previous year, only the metropolitan area of Recife had decrease in the overall income (-3.2%).  The other areas registered increase: Salvador (11.9%), Belo Horizonte (5.2%), Rio de Janeiro (11.2%), São Paulo (3.0%) and Porto Alegre (9.0%).
