Unemployment rate remains at 10.1% in May

Unemployment rate has remained the same for three months. It is also stable in comparison with May 2006 (10.2%).

 

Unemployment has kept the same rate for the third month. It is also stable in comparison with May 2006 (10.2%). The real average income of the employed population (R$ 1,120,30) did not present statistically significant change in relation to April and increased 3.9% over the rate of May 2006.

 

The unemployed population (2,3 million) was stable in both comparisons, The employed population (20,5 million) did not change in relation to April, but increased by 2.7% (548 thousand persons) in comparison with May 2006.

 

The estimated Mass of Real Income of the Employed Population was R$ 22,7 billion, with increase of 0.9% in relation to March and of 5.6% versus April 2006. The household income per capita (R$ 697,40) was stable in relation to April and increased by 4.1% compared to May last year. 

 

 

 

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

 

In May 2007, the estimated unemployment rate for the group of six areas covered by the survey was 10.1%; there was stability in comparison with last April.  The same behavior was observed in relation to May 2006.

 

By area, in comparison with the previous month, there were no changes in the estimates for any of the areas analyzed. In comparison with May 2006, the only area to present significant change was Recife, of which rate decreased from 15.0% to 12.4%.

 

 

UNEMPLOYED PERSONS (PD)

 

The Monthly Employment Survey showed there was stability of the number of unemployed persons (2,3 million) both in comparison with the previous month and in comparison with May 2006, considering the six areas surveyed.

 

 

In the analysis by area, no estimates have changed in relation to last April. In comparison with May 2006, there was decrease in Recife (-19.0%) and increase in Salvador (17.5%).

 

Among the unemployed persons, 55.5% were women; 8.0% were between 15 and 17 years of age; 32.8% were between 18 and 24 years of age; 46.9%, between 25 and 49 years of age and 6.2% were 50 years of age or over.

 

Among the unemployed persons, 19.8% were searching for their first job and 24.8% were the head of the household. In relation to the job searching period, the results were: 26.2% had been searching for a job for a period no longer than 30 days; 46.8%, for a period between 31 days and 6 months; 6.7%, for a period between 7 and 11 months; and 20.3%, for a period of at least 1 year. In May 2005, 47.5% of the unemployed persons had finished at least high school; in May 2006, 48.3%, and, in the last survey, 51.2%.

 

 

EMPLOYED PERSONS (PO)

 

The estimated employed population in May 2007 was 20,5 million. It did not change in relation to April, but increased by 2.7% (about 548 thousand persons) in relation to May 2006.

 

By area, in relation to April 2007, there was significant change only among the employed persons in the metropolitan area of Salvador (2.2%). In the annual comparison, there were increases in Salvador (7.5%), Belo Horizonte (2.9%) and São Paulo (3.1%).

 

 

Men made up 55.7% of the employed population, and women, for 44.3%. The population between 25 and 49 years of age made up 63.4% of the employed persons, and among these, 53.8% had at least 11 or more years of schooling.

 

The survey estimated as 57% the percentage of persons working in enterprises with 11 or more persons and as 6.0% those working in enterprises with 6 – 10 employed persons. In the enterprises with at most 5 employed persons, the figure was 37.1%.

 

According to the Monthly Employment Survey, 50.0% of the employed population worked from 40 to 44 hours per week, and about 32.7%, worked above 45 hours per week. On average, 68.3% of the workers had been in that job for at least 2 years; 11.4% for more than 1 year and less than 2 years; 18.5% for between 1 month and 1 year and only 1.8% for less than 1 month.

 

Analysis of the results in relation to the main Groups of Activity

 

Mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry  and distribution of electricity, gas and water (17.1% of the employed population) There was stability in relation to April 2007 and to May 2006, for the group of six areas. In the analysis by area, there were no changes, in either the monthly or in the annual comparison.

 

Construction (7.1% of the employed population) In the group of six areas, in both comparisons, there was stability. In the analysis by area, in relation to April, there was change only in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro (-9.4%), and, in the annual comparison, only in Belo Horizonte (11.5%).

 

Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels (19.3% of the employed population) There was stability in both comparisons, in the group of six areas. In the analysis by area, there were changes in Salvador: 6.6% in comparison with April and 17.9% in comparison with May 2006.

 

Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (15.1% of the employed population) There was stability in the monthly comparison and increase of 9.9% in relation to the previous year, in the group of six areas. In the analysis by area, in comparison with the previous month, only Rio de Janeiro had a change (5.8%). In the annual comparison, there were increases in Salvador (11.6%), Rio de Janeiro (11.4%), São Paulo (9.8%) and Porto Alegre (10.2%).

 

Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (15.5% of the employed population) In the group of six areas and in the analysis by area, there was stability.

 

 

Domestic services (8.5% of the employed population) In the group of six areas, there was stability in relation to the previous month and increase (7.0%) in relation to May 2006. In the analysis by area, in comparison with April, there was increase only in the metropolitan area of São Paulo (5.6%). In comparison with May 2006, there were increases in Recife (22.7%), Salvador (15.1%) and São Paulo (13.4%).

 

Other services (Lodging and feeding, transportation, storage and communications, urban cleaning, associate, recreational, cultural and sports activities and personal services) (16.7% of the employed population) There was stability in both comparisons, in the group of six areas and in the analysis by area.

 

 

 

Analysis by type of participation in the job market

 

Workers WITH a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military servants and statutory civil servants and others) (42.2% of the employed population) In relation to last April, there was stability. In comparison with May 2006, there was increase by 3.9%, that is, 329 thousand new workers with a formal contract.

 

In the analysis by area, in the monthly comparison, there was increase in Recife (5.8%). In relation to May 2006, there were increments in Recife (9.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.6%).  

 

Workers WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military servants and statutory civil servants and others) (13.9% of the employed population) There was stability in both comparisons in the group of six areas.

 

In the analysis by area, in relation to April, there were changes in Salvador (8.0%) and São Paulo (-5.6%). In comparison with May 2006, there was stability in all the areas.

 

Own-account workers (19.4% of the employed population) There was stability in the monthly comparison, and increase of 4.6% in relation to May 2006, for the group of six areas.

 

 

In the analysis by area, there was stability in relation to the previous month. In the annual comparison, there was increase in Salvador (13.4%) and São Paulo (9.9%) and decrease in Recife (-8.1%).

 

 

REAL AVERAGE INCOME1

 

In May 2007, the real average income usually earned by workers in the group of six metropolitan areas (R$ 1,120,30) was stable in relation to April and increased by 3.9% in relation to May 2006.

 

In the analysis by are, in relation to April, there was increase in Salvador (5.6%) and decrease in Recife (-1.8%). In the annual comparison, there were increases in Salvador (12.7%), Belo Horizonte (1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (9.1%), São Paulo (1.5%) and Porto Alegre (4.0%). In Recife, there was decrease (-1.4%).

 

Income of the categories of position in the occupation – MONTHLY COMPARISON

 

For the group of six areas, the scenario was:

 

Workers with a formal contract in the private sector: There was stability in the average household income, estimated to be R$ 1,102,80 in May 2007.

 

There were decreases in Recife (-0,8%) and in Rio de Janeiro (-2,0%) and increases in Salvador (7.2%), Belo Horizonte, (1.2%) and Porto Alegre (1.3%). In São Paulo, income did not change.   


 

Workers without a formal contract in the private sector: There was increase (6.0%) of the average income, estimated to be R$ 746,40 in May 2007.

 

There was decrease in Recife (-2.8%) and there were increases in Salvador (0.6%), Belo Horizonte (4.6%), Rio de Janeiro (6.7%), São Paulo (8.6%) and Porto Alegre (3.5%).

 

Own-account workers: There was recovery (0.4%), with average income of R$ 915,30.

 

There were increases in Salvador (0.6%), Belo Horizonte (2.5%) and São Paulo (1.0%). There were decreases in Recife (0.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-0.5%) and Porto Alegre (-1.0%).

 

 

Income of the categories of position in the occupation – ANNUAL COMPARISON

 

Workers with a formal contract in the private sector: There was increase of 1.4% in relation to May 2006.

 

There were increases in Recife (1.5%), Salvador (5.3%), Belo Horizonte (4.2%), Rio de Janeiro (2.7%) and Porto Alegre (4.7%). There was stability in São Paulo.

 

 

Workers WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (R$ 746,40): There was increase by 12.2%.

 

There were increases in Recife (15.7%), Salvador (26.7%), Belo Horizonte (9.7%), Rio de Janeiro (3.0%), São Paulo (16.2%) and Porto Alegre (4.8%).

 

Own-account workers (R$ 915,30): There was recovery (5.1%).

 

There were increases in Recife (7.5%), Salvador (5.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (21.2%) and decreases in Belo Horizonte (-3.1%), São Paulo (-2.8%) and Porto Alegre (-1.2%).

Real Average Household Income Per Capita2

 

In May 2007, for the group of six areas, the real average household income per capita (R$ 697,40) was stable in relation to last April and increased by 4.1% in relation to May 2006.

 

In relation to the previous month, there were falls in Porto Alegre (-0.9%), Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro (both with -0.5%) and recovery in Salvador (5.9%) and São Paulo (0.4%). In comparison with May 2006, rates in Salvador (12.9%), Rio de Janeiro (8.8%) and São Paulo (3.0%) increased. However, Recife (-2.2%) and Belo Horizonte (-1.4%) faced decline.

 

 


 

Mass of Real Income of the Employed Population3

 

The Mass of Real Income of the Employed Population (reference month: April 2007) was estimated as R$ 22,7 billion. There was increase in relation to March (0.9%) and very  significant increase in relation to April 2006, 5.6%.

 

 

In the monthly comparison, there were increases in Salvador (7.5%), Belo Horizonte (0.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.2%) and decreases in Recife (-2.0%) and São Paulo. The present scenario shows decrease in increases in Salvador (18.9%), Belo Horizonte (2.1%), Rio de Janeiro (11.9), São Paulo (2.8%) e Porto Alegre (4.7%).
