Unemployment rate was 10.1% in April

The April rate was the same as in March (10.1%) and did not have any statistically significant change in relation to April 2006 (10.4%). The average real income of the employed population (R$ 1,114,00) did not have undergo any significant change in relation to March (R$ 1,111,11) and increased 5.0% in relation to April last year (R$ 1,060,50). The average household income per capita (R$ 693,67) fell by 0.7% in relation to March and increased 5.7% compared to April 2006. The employed population in the six areas surveyed (20,5 million) was the same in comparison with March and increased 3.2% in relation to April 2006, whereas the total number of unemployed persons remained stable in both comparisons. The salary mass decreased in relation to February (0.4%), but increased 7.1% in relation to March 2006, the biggest hike this month since 2002.   

UNEMPLOYMENT

In April 2007, the estimated unemployment rate was 10.1% for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed investigated by PME (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife and Porto Alegre),; there was stability in relation to last March and also to April 2006.

 

In relation to March, none of the areas surveyed underwent any changes. In comparison with April 2006, there was decrease in Recife (from 16.5% to 12.1%) and Belo Horizonte (from 9.1% to 8.1%).

 

The Monthly Employment Survey showed stability of the number of employed persons (2,3 million) both in relation to March 2007 and in relation to April 2006. By area, in comparison with March, there was stability, but in comparison with April 2006, the number of unemployed persons decreased in Recife (-28.9%) and increased in São Paulo (12.4%).

 

Among the unemployed, 56.1% were women; 7.9% were between 15 and 17 years of age; 38.5% were between 18 and 24 years of age; 47.5% between 25 and 49 years of age and 5.4% were 50 or over;, 20.3% were searching for their first job and 24.2% were the head of the household; 23.0% had been searching for a job for less than 30 days; 50.0%, for a period between 31 days and 6 months; 7.0%, from 7 to 11 months; 19.9%, for at least a year.

 

EMPLOYED PERSONS

 

In April, the employed population in the six metropolitan areas surveyed (20,5 million) did not change in relation to March, and increased 3.2% (640 thousand persons) in relation to April 2006.

 

By area, in comparison with March, the employed population decreased in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%), and was stable in the other ones. In the annual comparison, there was increase in Salvador (5.7%), Belo Horizonte (6.9%), São Paulo (3.2%) and Porto Alegre (3.5%). In Recife and Rio de Janeiro, there was stability.   

 

In April, men accounted for 55.8% of the employed population, and women, for 44.2%. Persons between 25 and 49 years of age made up 63.1% of the employed population. The percentage of employed persons 11 year of age or over was 53.5%.

 

According to the Monthly Employment Survey, the estimated number of persons working in enterprises with 11 or more persons was 57.0%; in enterprises with 6 to 10 employees, the percentage was 6.1%, and in those with up to 5 employed persons, it was 36.9%.

 

In April 2007, 48.7% of the employed population worked from 40 to 44 hours per week and about 33.9%, more than 45 hour per week. On average, 68.2% of the workers in the six metropolitan areas surveyed had been in the same job for at least two years; 11.6%, between one year and less than two years; 18.4% between for one month and only 1.9% had been in that job for at least one month.   


Mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (17.1% of the Employed Population)There was stability in relation to both March 2007 and April 2006, in the six areas surveyed. In the analysis by area, there was stability in relation to March 2007 and April 2006, and hike in Belo Horizonte (7.6%).  

 

Construction (7.4% of the Employed Population) – In the monthly comparison, the number of employed persons in this segment remained stable. The employed population increased in relation to April 2006 (6.3%). In the analysis by area, there was stability in relation to March, and increase in Belo Horizonte (17.4%), São Paulo (10.6%), in relation to April 2006.

 

Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels (19.5% of the Employed Population) – There was stability in relation to both March 2007 and April 2006, in the six regions, grouped and separately.

Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (14.8% of the Employed Population) – There was stability in the monthly comparison and hike of 7.5% in relation to the previous year. There was stability in all the areas in relation to March, and in comparison with April 2006, there were hikes in Salvador (18.2%), Belo Horizonte (9.9%) and Porto Alegre (10.7%).

Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (15.4% of the Employed Population) In the group of six areas, in both comparisons, there was stability. In the analysis by area, in all the areas surveyed, there was stability as well.

 

Domestic services (8.3% of the Employed Population) There was stability in relation to March and hike (5.3%) in relation to April 2006. In the analysis by area, there were no changes, in the monthly comparison. In relation to April 2006, there were hikes in Recife (30.1%) and Belo Horizonte (11.5%).

 

Other services (Lodging and feeding, transportation, storage and communications, urban cleaning, associate, recreational, cultural and sports activities, personal services) (16.9% of the Employed Population) There was stability in relation to March and increase (4.1%) in relation to April 2006. In the analysis by area, in relation to March, there were no changes. In relation to April 2006, there were hikes in Belo Horizonte (9.6%) and São Paulo (7.8%).

 

 Analysis of the type of participation in the job market

 

Workers with a formal contract in the job market (except domestic workers, military, civil servants and others) (42.1% of the Employed Population) In relation to March, there was stability, and in comparison with April 2006, there was hike of 3.9%, that is, of 325 thousand new workers with a formal contract, in the six metropolitan areas. In comparison with March, there was stability in all the metropolitan areas surveyed. In relation to April 2006, there were hikes in Recife (6.5%), Salvador (7.2%), Belo Horizonte (4.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.7%). In São Paulo and Porto Alegre, there was stability.

 

 

Workers without a formal contract in the private sector (except domestic workers, military, civil servants and others) (14.2% of the Employed Population) – There was stability in both comparisons in the group of six areas. In relation to March, there was hike in Porto Alegre (9.9%) and in comparison with April 2006 and hike in Belo Horizonte (13.8%).

 

Own-account workers (19.1% of the Employed Population) – There was decrease (-2.4%) in the monthly comparison and, in relation to April 2006, increase of 5.0% in the group of six areas. There was fall in São Paulo (5.2%) in relation to March and, in the annual comparison, increase in two areas: Salvador (8.8%) and São Paulo (7.9%).  

 

 

AVERAGE REAL INCOME1

 

In April 2007, the average real income usually earned by workers (%$ 1,114,00) was stable in relation to March and increased 5.0% in relation to April 2006.

 

In comparison with March, there were hikes in Recife (3.7%), Belo Horizonte (3.3%) and Rio de Janeiro 90.6%); falling results in São Paulo and Porto Alegre (0.6%) and stability in Salvador. In relation to April 2006, there were hikes in all the metropolitan areas: Recife (4.2%), Salvador (6.5%), Belo Horizonte (3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (9.9%), São Paulo (2.8%) and Porto Alegre (6.0%). 

 

 

Income of categories of position in the activity in the MONTHLY comparison:

 

Workers with a formal contract in the private sector – There was increase (1.8%) of the average income (R$ 1,101,70). In Recife (2.1%) and São Paulo (3.5%) there were gains; in Salvador (-1.6%) Belo Horizonte (-2.3%) and Porto Alegre (-1.0%) there was decrease. In Rio de Janeiro, income remained stable.

 

Workers without a formal contract in the private sector – There was decrease (-1.5%) of the average income (R$ 702,20). Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo had losses of 2.1% and 3.6%, respectively. There were hikes in Recife and Salvador (11.8% in each) and in Porto Alegre (0.7%). In Belo Horizonte income remained unchanged.

 

Own-account workers – There was decrease (2.7%) of income (R$ 909,10). There was decrease in Salvador (-7.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.3%) and São Paulo (-3.8%) and increase in Belo Horzonte (3.5%). In Recife and Porto Alegre, there was stability.  

 

 

Income of categories of position in the activity in the ANNUAL comparison:

 

In the group of six areas, the income of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (R$ 1,101,70) increased 2.2% in relation to April 2006. In Recife (9.3%), Salvador (0.4%), Belo Horizonte (1.1%), Rio de Janeiro (3.5%), São Paulo (1.3%) and Porto Alegre (5.1%) there were gains of income.

 

In the group of six areas, the income of workers without a formal contract in the private sector increased by 3.3%, having changed from R$ 679,47 to R$ 702,20. In Recife (15.5%0, Salvador (22.5%), Belo Horizonte (2.4%), São Paulo (3.4%) and Porto Alegre (0.6%), there was increase; in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, there was fall (-3.3%).  

 

In the group of six areas, the income of own-account workers increased by 7.4%. There was recovery of the income of Recife (10.6%), Salvador (5.4%), Belo Horizonte (7.2%), Rio de Janeiro (16.9%) and Porto Alegre (6.7%). In São Paulo, income remained unchanged.

In April 2007, the average real household income per capita was R$ 693,67; there was decrease by 0.7% in relation to March. In comparison with April 2006, there was recovery (5.7%).

In the analysis by area, in relation to March, there was decrease in Salvador (-1.1%) and São Paulo (-2.6%), recovery in Recife (2.5%), Belo Horizonte (3.3%) and Porto Alegre (1.3%). In Rio de Janeiro there were no changes in income. In comparison with April 2006, there were hikes in all the metropolitan areas: Recife (5.6%), Salvador (5.4%), Belo Horizonte (4.9%), Rio de Janeiro (9.1%), São Paulo (4.1%) and Porto Alegre (5.1%). 

MASS OF EFFECTIVE REAL INCOME OF THE EMPLOYED POPULATION3

 

In March 2007, the Mass of Effective Real Income of the Employed Population) according to the Monthly Employment Survey of April 2007) was R$ 22,5 billion. There was decrease in relation to February (0.4%), but also significant increase (7.1%) in relation to March 2006, and it was the biggest variation observed among the months of March in different years:  from 2002 to 2003 (-2.6%); from  2003 to 2004 (-1.1%); from 2004 to 2005 (5.5%); from 2005 to 2006 (5.0%).

 

There was increase, in the monthly comparison, in Recife (3.9%), Belo Horizonte (3.7%) and Porto Alegre (1.1%) and decrease in Salvador (-1.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%) and São Paulo (-1.2%). Currently, there are hikes in all the areas: Recife (6.4%), Salvador (11.2%), Belo Horizonte (8.0%), Rio de Janeiro (10.5%), São Paulo (4.4%) and Porto Alegre (9.8%).
