The National Construction Index, calculated by IBGE in partnership with Caixa Econômica Federal changed by 0.41% in February, being 0,14 percentage points over the January result (0.27%). The current index (0.41%) increased by 0,10 percentage points in relation to February 2006 (0.31%), having accumulated changes of 0.67% in the year and 5.06% in the last 12 months.

The national cost by square meter changed from R$ 572,52 in January to R$ 574,85 in February, being R$ 333,01 relative to material and R$ 241,84 relative to manpower. Material changed by 0.49%, 0,18 percentage point over the change registered in January (0.31%). Manpower rose 0.08 percentage points, having changed from 0.21% in January to 0.29% in February.

The rates accumulated in the year had the following changes: 0,80% (material) and 0.51% (manpower). In the last 12 months, the changes were 4,11% (material) and 6.40% (manpower).

North and Northeast are highlights

The North Region was one of the highlights in February, with the highest index by region (0.79%), affected by the result of Rondônia (2.76%). The index of the Northeast region, influenced by Piauí (2.65%) had the second change (0.53%).

The other changes by region were below the national index (0.41%): in the Southeast, 0.33%; in the Central West, 0.32%; in the South, 0.25%.

The North Region had index of 1,30% in the year, and the last 12 months (6.28%) the highest accumulated indexes in relation to the other regions. The costs by region were: R$ 612,10 (Southeast), R$ 570,08 (South), R$ 563,08 (North), R$ 545,89 (Central-West), and R$ 534,24 (Northeast).

Among the states, Rondônia and Piauí were the highlights in February

Rondônia (2.67%) and Piauí (2.65%) had the highest monthly changes in February, reflecting the salary readjustments of the professional categories of construction. The lowest changes occurred in Roraima (0.06%), Paraná (0.08%) and Amapá (0.09%). In terms of the result accumulated in the year, the highlight was Piauí, with 3.45%, and in the last 12 months, Amapá, with accumulated index of 9.02%. 

These results are calculated monthly by IBGE, through a partnership with Caixa Econômica Federal, through SINAPI - National System of Costs Survey and Indexes of Construction.

SINAPI, created in 1969, has as its main objective the production of information on costs and indexes at national level in a systematic way. It is aimed at the elaboration and evaluation of budgets, monitoring of expenses, proper selection and use of material and planning of investments.

In 2002, the National Congress approved, through the Budget Directives Law, the use of SINAPI as the reference for the determination of costs for public construction/repair services.
