Employment in industry changed by -0.2% in November 2006

There was a negative change in the salaried occupation from October to November, as can be observed in the index already seasonally adjusted.   In the comparison November 2006 / November 2005, the rate of 0.6% was the best since July/05 (1.2%).  Nevertheless, there was decrease of 0.2% in the index accumulated in the year as well as in the index accumulated in the last 12 months.  The number of hours paid in November increased (1.3%) compared to October/06 (adjusted series), and was positive in the other comparisons: 0.8% (November/06 November/05) and 0.1% (index accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months).  The real payroll decreased by 4.2% in relation to October (adjusted series), after 3 consecutive positive rates.  Nevertheless, compared with the same periods of the previous year, the indicators were positive: 1.4% compared to November/05 and 1.3% in the index accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months also showed expansion (1.1%).

SALARIED EMPLOYED PERSONS

In November 2006, the industrial employment had a negative change of 0.2% compared to the immediately previous month, in the series without seasonal adjustment, a result close to the one observed in October (-0.1%), accumulating a decrease of 0.3% between September and November.  Even with negative change in the last two months, the trend of the quarterly moving average shows stability (0.0%) between the quarters closed in November and October.

In relation to November 2005, the fifth consecutive positive result was observed (0.6%), major rate since July 2005 (1.2%).  The indicators for longer periods continued negative, but close to stability: decreases of 0.2% in the index accumulated in the year and in the index accumulated in the last twelve months.

In the comparison November 06/ November 05 (0.6%), 9 among 14 localities and 10 among 18 segments contributed positively for the increase of employed persons in industry.  In the analysis by sectors, the main positive influences in the formation of the overall average were observed in food products and beverages (7.1%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (27.3%) and metal products (3.3%). 

Among the groups with fall in employment, footwear and leather articles (-13.0%), apparel (-5.3%) and machines and equipment (-3.4%) were the ones which brought the major negative influences in the total of the country.

In the analysis by areas still in this type of comparison stood out the indexes of the North and Central West Regions (8.2%), São Paulo (1.1%) and Northeast Region (1.1%).  In the first locality, employment increased in 11 groups, with food products and beverages (24.1%) and wood (9.3%) bringing the most significant positive results; in São Paulo, the most significant results among the 8 segments which had growth were observed in food products and beverages (10.5%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (43.4%).  In the Northeast Region, the main highlights were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (23.2%) and food products and beverages (1.6%).  On the other hand, among the localities which had negative rates, Rio Grande do Sul (-6.7%), Paraná (-1.0%) and Ceará (-0.4%) brought the major declining results.

The indicator accumulated in the year showed in January – November a negative change of 0.2% in the number of workers.  Dismissals were higher than admissions in 10 sectors, standing out footwear and leather articles (-13.1%), machines and equipment (-6.9%) and apparel   (-5.4%).  On the other hand, food products and beverages (7.9%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (14.7%) and electrical, electronic and communication equipment (4.1%) answered for the main positive results in the overall result.  In the analysis by areas, 8 localities reduced the employment, especially Rio Grande do Sul (-8.5%), Paraná (-2.3%) and Santa Catarina (-1.5%), while the North and Central West Regions (9.4%), São Paulo (0.7%) and Minas Gerais (0.8%) brought the major positive results.

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID
In November, the number of hours paid to the employed persons in the industry increased by 1.3% in relation to October, in the series without seasonal influence.  With this result, the quarterly moving average indicator increased by 0.6% among the quarters closed in October and November.  In the other comparisons, the results were also positive: increase of 0.8% in the monthly indicator and, in the periods of major coverage, a slight positive change (0.1%), in the indicator accumulated in the year as well as in the indicator of the last 12 months.

In the comparison November 06 / November 05, the number of hours paid increased by 0.8%, with 9 among 14 surveyed localities showing expansion.  Among these, the major positive results were observed in the North and Central West Regions (9.5%), São Paulo (2.0%) and Northeast Region (1.2%).  In the first locality, 10 among 18 activities increased the number of hours paid.  The main influences were observed in the sectors of food products and beverages (25.1%) and wood (9.9%).  In São Paulo stood out the positive influences observed in food products and beverages (5.2%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (39.6%).  In the Northeast Region, the major highlights were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (21.0%) and footwear and leather articles (5.5%).  On the other hand, the most relevant negative results in the overall result were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-6.9%) and Paraná (-1.0%), due, mainly, to decreases observed in footwear and leather articles (-21.5%) and machines and equipment (-9.3%), in the first, and wood (-19.1%) and apparel (-8.5%), in the second locality.

In the total of the country, 10 among 18 surveyed sectors increased the number of hours paid, being that the main positive influences were observed in food products and beverages (5.6%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (25.8%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (5.7%).  On the other hand, the most significant negative results were observed in footwear and leather articles (-9.2%) and apparel (-6.1%).

The index accumulated in the year had a slight positive variation (0.1%), with 7 among 14 localities and 9 among 18 sectors with positive rates.  In the analysis by areas, it should be observed, respectively, the positive influences of the North and Central West Regions (9.2%), São Paulo (1.8%) and Minas Gerais (1.4%).  On the other hand, the major negative results were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-7.8%), Paraná (-3.9%) and Santa Catarina (-2.7%).  In the overall result stood out the positive results observed in the sectors of food products and beverages (5.9%) electrical, electronic and communication equipment (8.0%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (16.0%).  On the other hand, the groups which most influenced negatively the overall indicator were footwear and leather articles (-8.0%), apparel (-5.8%) and machines and equipment (-5.7%).

REAL PAYROLL

 

In November, the real value of payroll in industry, seasonally adjusted, fell by 4.2% in relation to the previous month, after growing for 3 consecutive months, period in which it accumulated increase of 3.1%.  With these results, the quarterly moving average index decreased by 0.7% among the quarters closed in November and October, breaking, hence, 4 consecutive months of positive rates, when it accumulated increase of 1.6%.  On the other hand, in the comparisons with similar periods of the previous year, the results continued positive: 1.4% in the comparison with November 2005 and 1.3% in the index accumulated in the year.  The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, although continuing with positive rates, showed slight reduction in the rhythm of growth from October (1.3%) to November (1.1%).

In relation to November 2005, the value of payroll increased by 1.4%, sixth consecutive positive rate, with 9 among 14 localities showing expansion.  Among those which registered growth, it was relevant the result which was observed in Minas Gerais (5.5%) influenced, mainly, by increases observed by electrical, electronic and communication equipment (24.0%), chemical products (10.6%) and mining and quarrying (10.1%).  It should also be mentioned the positive contributions observed in São Paulo (0.8%), due to chemical products (36.5%), electrical, electronic and communication (12.5%), and non-metallic minerals (10.3%); and in the North and Central West Regions (6.5%), due to the sectors of food products and beverages (6.1%), chemical products (25.6%) and transportation (13.0%).  On the other hand, the major negative results were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-6.8%) and Bahia (-3.8%), showing respectively, the reduction in the value of payroll in the groups footwear and leather articles (-24.7%) and machines and equipment (-13.0%); and chemical products (-22.1%) and electrical, electronic and communication equipment (-18.8%).

In the analysis by sectors, still in this type of comparison, the value of payroll increased in 8 among 18 investigated activities.  The major positive contributions were observed in chemical products (15.9%), electrical, electronic and communication equipment (9.9%) and transportation (3.4%).  On the other hand, the main negative results were observed in machines and equipment (-9.5%), footwear and leather articles (-12.7%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-6.2%).

In the indicator accumulated in the year, the value of the real payroll increased by 1.3%, with positive results in the major part (11) of the surveyed localities.  The increases observed in Minas Gerais (7.7%), due to basic metallurgy (7.5%) and transportation (13.0%), and in São Paulo (1.2%), due to chemical products (32.0%) and electrical, electronic and communication equipment (13.8%) influenced positively this result.  Among the items with decrease, the major highlights were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-7.9%) and Paraná (-4.2%).  In these localities stood out the reductions in the value of the real payroll, respectively, of footwear and leather articles (-22.3%) and chemical products (-15.2%); and foot products and beverages (-10.9%) and wood (-16.4%).

In the total of the country, still in the index accumulated in the year, only 8 among 18 activities increased the value of the real payroll, with the main positive influences being observed in chemical products (14.5%); electrical, electronic and communication equipment (12.0%) and food products and beverages (3.3%).  On the other hand, machines and equipment (-10.5%), footwear and leather articles (-12.0%) and rubber and plastic (-3.9%) were the industrial groups which brought the most relevant reductions.
