Unemployment rate in Rio de Janeiro was 6.9% in November

Through a partnership with Pereira Passos Institute and based on information from the Monthly Employment Survey, IBGE obtained data about employment and income in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro in November 2006.

 

The objective of the technical cooperation accord between IBGE and Pereira Passos Institute aims at making it possible to produce information about employment and income based on the Monthly Employment Survey, for the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. Initially, it is going to last 24 months.

 

In November 2006 there was a total of 5,4 million persons 10 years old or over in Rio de Janeiro. In this group, 53.8% were economically active. The employment rate for the municipality (6.9%) was below that estimated for the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro (7.3%) and for the group of six areas investigated by PME (9.5%). The unemployment rate of the municipality was stable, because the number of employed and unemployed workers has not gone through significant change, both in relation to October 2006 and to November 2005. 

 

The average income usually earned by employed persons in the municipality was R$ 1,256,66 in October, and changed to R$ 1,225,10 in November 2006, with decrease of 2.5%. In comparison with November 2005 has not changed.  Last November, the average real income of workers in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro was 15.9% higher than that estimated for the group of six areas, and 23.3% higher than the figure calculated for the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro.

 

In the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, approximately 41.1% of the employed population was made up of workers with a formal contract in the private sector, and this rate was 3 percentage points higher than the rate in the metropolitan area. The rate of employment without a formal contract in the private sector was 11.2% of the employed population, in the municipality, versus 13.0% in the metropolitan area.

Own-account workers accounted for about 22.9% of the overall number of employed persons in the municipality, versus 23.6% in the metropolitan area. In both analyses the participation of own-account workers was higher than the estimated for the group of six areas (19.5%). The participation of military workers or workers under RJU regulation (Unified Juridical Regimen) in the employed population of the municipality was 10.1% whereas in the metropolitan area they were 9.1%, and in the group of six areas, 7.3% in the group of six areas.

 

In November 2006, the major contribution to the employed population in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro was that of Other Services (lodging, transportation, urban sanitation and personal services) (21.7%). The results for the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro and for the group of six areas were 19.8% and 17.1%, respectively.

 

PERSONS AT ACTIVE AGE (PIA)

 

In November 2006 there were 5,4 million persons 10 years of age or over in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. This indicator remained stable in relation to October 2006 and November 2005.

 

Women accounted for 54,5% of the number of persons at active age in November 2006, when 12.6% of the member of this group were between 10 and 17 years of age; 12.9% between 18 and 24 years of age; 42.0% between 25 and 49 years of age and 32.6% were 50 years of age or over. The group of youths between 16 and 24 years of age accounted for 16.3% of the overall figure, in November.

 

EMPLOYED POPULATION (PO)

 

According to data obtained by the Monthly employment Survey, there were 2,7 million persons employed in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro in November 2006, pointing to stability both in relation to the previous month and to November 2005.

 

The estimated level of occupation (percentage of the population 10 years of age or over which was employed) in November was 50.1%, versus 50.9% in October 2006 and 50.8% in November 2005.

 

Among the employed persons, 54.8% were men, 61.5% had 11 or more years of schooling, 74.1% had had the same job for at least 2 years, and 54.1% were working in enterprises with 11 or more persons. Concerning age, 1.2% was between 10 and 17, 12.8%, were between 18 and 24 years, 61.9%, between 25 and 49 years, and 24.1% were 50 years of age or over. The chart below shows these and other results about the employed population in November 2004, 2005 and 2006. 


In relation to October 2006, there was reduction of 7.7% of the overall number of persons employed only in the group of activity Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels, which meant loss of 40 thousand jobs in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. There were not other significant changes in the other segments, in comparison with October 2005 and November 2005.

UNEMPLOPYED PERSONS (PD)

The number of unemployed persons, estimated as 200 thousand, was stable in relation to October 2006 and November 2005. Considering the total number of unemployed persons, 60.0% were women, 57.8% were 11 years of age or over, 84.2% had already worked before and 24.2% were heads of the household. By age group the unemployed population was distributed as follows: 15 to 17 years of age: 4.3%; 18 to 24 years of age, 37.8%; 25 to 49 years of age, 49.2% and 50 years of age or over, 8.6%.

 

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

 

In November 2006, the estimated unemployment rate for the municipality of Rio de Janeiro was 6.9%, and this figure remained stable in comparison with October 2006 (6.7%) and also in relation to November 2005 (6.3%). 

The unemployment rate figures by sex are quite different considering the groups of men (5.1%) and women (8.9%), as shown below:

In November 2006, the average real income usually earned by the employed population(R$ 1,225,10) fell 2.5% in relation to the previous month and was stable in comparison with November 2005.

The decrease which occurred in the month was a consequence of the reduction of average income of workers with and without a formal contract in the private sector, and of own-account workers (-1.5%, -3.4% and -1.0%, respectively).

 

In the annual comparison, there was fall of the income of workers with and without a formal contract in the private sector (-1.2%, -29.0%). There was reduction of the income of own-account workers by 0.7%.

NON-ECONOMICALLY ACTIVE POPULATION (PNEA)

 

In November 2006, the total of non-economically active employed persons in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro was estimated as 2,5 million. This total corresponds to 46.2% of the population 10 years of age or over in the municipality. There was not, however, significant oscillation in the monthly and annual comparisons.

 

In the Non-economically active population, in November 2006, women accounted for 64.1% and men for 35.9%. The population under 18 years of age and those 50 years of age or over accounted for 25.6% and 43.7%of the overall group, respectively. In terms of years of schooling, 29.8% had finished at least high school.

 

In the month analyzed, among the persons who were out of the job market, 91.9% declared not to be willing to work, 6.8% wanted were available to work, and 1.3% wanted but were not available to work.
