In September, industrial production fell in 8 among 14 surveyed localities

The most pronounced decrease in relation to August was registered in Goiás (-7.2%). São Paulo (-2.7%), major industrial in the country, also decreased more than the national average (-1.4%).  On the other hand, Espírito Santo (9.9%), Pernambuco (3.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.4%) had the major growing rates from August to September.

In relation to September of the previous year, the industrial activity showed growth in 11 among 14 surveyed localities, with Pará (13.7%), Espírito Santo (12.6%) and Ceará (10.8%) registering the major expansions. Above the Brazilian average (1.3%) we may find Pernambuco (5.7%), Northeast Region (4.5%), Minas Gerais (4.2%), Amazonas (3.2%), Santa Catarina (3.0%), Bahia (3.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%). São Paulo (0.7%) also had a positive rate, although below the national average. Goiás (-1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%) and Paraná (-8.0%) also fell in this comparison.

In the analysis by quarters, 12 among 14 surveyed areas registered expansion in the third quarter, in comparison with the same period of 2005.  Also the majority of localities (10) maintained an ascending trend in relation to the second quarter of this year.  This acceleration was particularly more pronounced in Amazonas, where the rate changed from -12.0% in the second quarter to 0.1% in the third quarter, always in comparison with the same period of the previous year. Following was Ceará (from 4.0 to 10.4%) and Santa Catarina (from -3.2 to 2.7%).  Regarding the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (series seasonally adjusted), 9 among 14 localities had positive results, with Pará (3.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (3.5%) reaching the highest levels, while Paraná (-3.7%) registered the lowest loss among the two quarters.

In the indicator accumulated in the year, in relation to the same period of 2005, there was growth in 11 localities.  The industry of Pará had the major expansion (15.2%), supported mainly in the dynamism of the exports (iron ore and metallurgic products).  With rates above the national average (2.7%) still were Ceará (8.3%), Espírito Santo (6.8%), Pernambuco (4.4%), Minas Gerais (4.2%), Bahia (4.2%), Northeast Region (3.6%) and São Paulo (3.4%).  The regional results confirm the profile of growth in the year, supported, mainly, in the production of durable consumer goods and capital goods, besides the contribution which came from exports.  Presenting rates below the national average, are Rio de Janeiro (2.5%), Goiás (1.8%), Santa Catarina (0.3%), Amazonas (-1.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.0%) and Paraná (-3.6%).

Amazonas

In September, the industry fell by 0.2% in relation to August, after two months in a row with growth, in which it accumulated gain of 4.0%.  In relation to September 2005, there was increase of 3.2%, after five months of negative results.  The index accumulated in the year registered decrease of 1.7%.  The indicator accumulated in the last 12 months (-1.1%), shows stability in the rhythm of fall, compared to August. In the third quarter of 2006, the production was almost stable (0.1%) compared to a similar period of 2005 and increased by 1.4% in the comparison with the second quarter of 2006 (seasonally adjusted series).

In the comparison with September 2005 (3.2%), 5 among 11 activities increased the production, especially food products and beverages (27.3%), followed by metal products (44.5%), edition and printing (54.5%) and other transportation equipment (14.5%).  In these segments, stand out, respectively, the manufacturing of syrups and powder for beverage production; shaving equipment, due to the increase of exports; videotapes; and motorcycles. 

On the other hand, electronic material and communication equipment (-13.8%) brought the main negative contribution, due, mainly, to decreases in the production of mobile telephones and radios. The second major negative result was observed in chemical products (-42.7%), were stood out the decrease in the manufacturing of photographic films and papers.

In the analysis by quarters, the major dynamism from the second (-12.0%) to the third quarter (0.1%) reached 8 among 11 activities, standing out food products and beverages, which changed from -10.3% to 27.0%, electronic material and communication equipment (from -22.2% to -17.2%) and metal products (from 3.4% to 52.7%).

In the index accumulated of the year (-1.7%), the results were negative in 5 among 11 segments, with the more relevant results being observed in electronic material and communication equipment (-10.9%) and chemical products (-31.6%).  On the other hand, other transportation equipment (15.0%) and metal products (25.0%) brought the main positive influences.
In the comparison quarter versus immediately previous quarter, in 2006,  the industrial activity of Amazonas registered a significant acceleration, from -7.1% to 1.4%.


Pará

The industry fell by 0.7% in relation to August, while in the comparison with the third quarter of this year with the immediately previous one there was increase of 3.8%.  All the comparisons compared to a similar period of the previous year register growth: 13.7% compared to September 2005, 18.4% in relation to the third quarter of 2005 and 15.2% in the accumulated rate of the year.  The accumulated index of the last 12 months (12.2%) shows acceleration compared to the result of August (11.5%).

In the comparison with September 2005 (13.7%), the six surveyed activities had positive rates, being the most significant basic metallurgy (29.1%) and mining and quarrying (9.0%).

In the quarterly analysis, the industry of Pará continued in an ascending trend, which began in the fourth quarter of 2005.  The increase observed from the second (14.2%) to the third quarter of 2006 (18.4%), in relation to the same periods of the previous year, was supported by the major dynamism in five among six surveyed segments, especially mining and quarrying,  which changed from 11.2% to 15.0%; and wood (from -10.8% to 3.2%).

The indicator accumulated January-September, compared to a similar period of the previous year, increased by 15.2%, with positive rates in five among six surveyed segments.  The most relevant results were observed in mining and quarrying (17.1%) and basic metallurgy (20.2%).  On the other hand, wood (-5.0%) brought the only negative result.

In the comparison with the immediately previous quarter, the industry of Pará increased (3.8%) for the fourth consecutive quarter, accumulating an increment of 17.7%.

Northeast

In September, the industrial production was almost stable (-0.1%) in relation to August, while the comparison with the third quarter with the immediately previous quarter presented increase of 1.1%.  All the comparisons with the same period of the previous year registered increase: 4.5% compared to September 2005; 4.0% in relation to the third quarter; and 3.6% in the accumulated in the year.  The accumulated indicator in the last 12 months (2.8%) showed acceleration in relation to the result of August (2.2%).

In the comparison with September 2005, the industry of the Northeast increased by 4.5%, supported mainly on the positive rates of 8 among 11 surveyed segments. The most significant results were food products and beverages (7.2%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (8.8%) and chemical products (2.4%).  On the other hand, mining and quarrying (-4.5%) and apparel (-3.0%) brought the main negative results.

In the analysis by quarters, the productive rhythm of the industry of the state showed a major dynamism from the second (3.0%) to the third quarter (4.0%), both comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  For this trend, were important the increases in 5 among 11 surveyed segments, especially food products and beverages, which changed from -0.8% to 8.7%; and apparel (from -29.1% to -2.5%).

In the index accumulated in the year, the increment (3.6%) was a consequence mainly of the positive performance of 9 among 11 surveyed activities.  The major positive influences were observed in cellulose and paper (24.7%), basic metallurgy (12.6%) and food products and beverages (3.0%).  On the other hand, the two only negative results were observed in apparel (-16.9%); and mining and quarrying (-3.8%).

In the comparison with the immediately previous quarter, the overall industry, while growing 1.1%, maintained a sequence of five consecutive quarters of positive results, period in which it accumulated expansion of 4.6%.

Ceará

The industrial production increased by 0.3% in the comparison with August.  In relation to the immediately previous quarter, there was increment of 1.2% in the period July-September 2006, after a decrease of 1.2% in the second quarter, in this same comparison.  In relation to the same period of 2005, the main indicators continue positive: 10.8% compared to September; 10.4% in the comparison with the third quarter; and 8.3% in the index accumulated of the year.  The accumulated indicator of the last 12 months (3.7%) shows acceleration in relation to August (1.6%).

In the comparison with September 2005, the industry of the state registered the fifth consecutive positive rate (10.8%).  For this result, contributed positively seven among ten surveyed segments, especially food products and beverages (13.9%); footwear and leather articles (20.0%); and electric machines, material and equipment (95.4%). The main negative results were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-22.1%) and apparel (-3.6%).

In the quarterly analysis, the sector has been presenting positive results for three consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with similar period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, there was expansion of 10.4%, a result above the one obtained in the second quarter (4.0%) and similar to the one registered in the first quarter (10.5%).  The acceleration from the second to the third quarter occurred mainly due to food products and beverages, which changed from a decrease of 8.6% to an increase of 15.6%.  There were also increases in apparel and accessories (from -24.6% to 0.5%); and footwear and leather articles (from -8.4% to 1.5%).   

In the index accumulated (8.3%), there was increment in eight among ten surveyed activities.  The major positive contributions were observed in textiles (15.0%); electric machines, equipment and material (94.1%); and chemical products (29.9%).  The two negative influences were observed in apparel and accessories (-14.2%); and in non-metallic minerals (-8.3%).

Pernambuco

In relation to August, the industrial production increased by 3.1%, but, in the comparison with the third quarter of 2006 compared to the immediately previous quarter, there was a decrease of 0.5%, which broke a sequence of four quarters with positive results, a period in which it accumulated 6.7%.  In the comparison with similar periods of 2005, the indicators continue positive: 5.7% in the comparison with September 2005; 3.7% in the third quarter; and 4.4% in the index accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months (4.9%) shows acceleration compared to the result of August (4.1%).

In relation to September 2005, the industry of the state increased (5.7%) for the 11th consecutive month, with positive rates in 7 among 11 surveyed activities.  The growth occurred mainly to the good performance of food products and beverages (13.0%).  It should also be mentioned cellulose and paper (23.1%); and petroleum refining and alcohol production (62.8%).  On the other hand, the main negative influences were observed in electric machines, equipment and material (-10.4%); and non-metallic minerals (-8.3%).

In relation to the third quarter of 2005, the industrial production continues, for the fifth consecutive quarter, with positive rates.  In the period July- September, the expansion of 3.7% was lower than the one obtained in the quarter April-June (6.6%).   This deceleration occurred in seven sectors, especially rubber and plastic, which changed from 71.1% to 10.6%; non-metallic minerals (from 15.3% to -1.1%) and metal products (from 12.5% to -3.1%).

In the index accumulated in the year (4.4%), the industry has positive rates in seven segments.  The most relevant results were observed in food products and beverages (8.6%); basic metallurgy (10.7%); and rubber and plastic (34.1%).  The main negative results were observed in chemical products (-11.9%); and electric machines, equipment and material (-8.6%).

Bahia

In September, the industrial production fell by 0.4% in relation to August. There also was decrease in the comparison of the third quarter with the immediately previous quarter (-1.2%), after five quarters with positive results, period in which it accumulated increases of 6.8%.  In the comparison with similar periods of 2005, the main indicators were positive: 3.0% in the monthly indicator; 0.8% in the third quarter; and 4.2% in the index accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months (4.2%) shows maintenance in the rhythm in relation to the result of August (4.3%).

Compared to September 2005, there were positive rates in five among nine surveyed sectors, especially for chemical products (5.3%).  It can also be mentioned the positive performances of petroleum refining and alcohol production (5.9%); and of cellulose and paper (8.2%).  On the other hand, the major negative contributions were observed in food products and beverages (-5.8%); and in mining and quarrying (-1.7%).

The industrial sector of the state is maintaining positive results for 11 consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with similar period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, nevertheless, the increase of 0.8% was considerably lower than the rates of the second (4.8%) and first quarter (7.1%).   The loss of dynamism is explained, mainly, by three important activities in the industrial structure of the state: petroleum refining and alcohol production, which changed from a growth of 6.9% in the second quarter to a decrease of 1.5% in the third quarter; basic metallurgy (from 23.0% to 5.1%); and cellulose and paper, which increased in a lower intensity (from 36.9% to 16.1%).

In the index accumulated until September, positive results were recorded in five sectors.  The most relevant positive contributions came from cellulose and paper (28.1%); petroleum refining and alcohol production (5.2%); and basic metallurgy (12.3%).  On the other hand, the major negative influences came from food products and beverages (-3.1%); and automotive vehicles (-5.1%).

Minas Gerais

The industry of the state shows positive indexes in the different types of comparison.  In relation to August, there was increase of 0.5%, third consecutive positive result, causing an accumulated expansion of 2.7% in this period.  In the comparison with September 2005, the sector continues with a positive rate (4.2%), fact which occurred since July.  The indexes accumulated, in the year (4.2%) as in the last 12 months (4.4%), registered growth above the national average (2.7% and 2.3%, respectively).  In the period July-September, the production also increased compared to the same period of 2005 (3.4%), as in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter (1.1%).

The increase of 4.2%, in the comparison with September 2005, is supported in the good performance of mining and quarrying (8.4%) as in the manufacturing industry (3.5%), where 9 among 12 surveyed segments had expansion.  In this case, automotive vehicles (14.1%) brought the main positive results, followed by cellulose and paper (20.6%) and machines and equipment (10.2%).  On the other hand, metal products (-10.6%) and tobacco (-12.3%) were the only two activities to register negative rates.

The industrial sector of the state is supporting positive results for 17 consecutive quarters, in the comparison with the same period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, the increase of 3.4% showed a slight acceleration in the rhythm of growth, once the second one indicated expansion of 3.0%.  This trend reached 7 among 13 industrial segments, being especially more intense in automotive vehicles (from 3.1% in the second quarter to 15.6% in the third quarter).

In the index accumulated of the year (4.2%), 11 segments had growth of production.  The performance of mining and quarrying (8.9%) was one of the main determinants for the positive result.  In the manufacturing industry (3.4%), once again automotive vehicles (10.0%) answered for the most important positive result.  It should also be mentioned the favorable performance of basic metallurgy (3.3%) and food products (4.2%).  On the other hand, the major negative contribution continues to be observed in metal products (-14.2%).

The index of the third quarter compared to the immediately previous quarter (1.1%) showed acceleration in the rhythm of industrial activity in relation to the second quarter (0.5%).  It was the tenth consecutive positive result in this type of comparison, accumulating a gain of 15.9%.

Espírito Santo

The industrial production increased by 9.9% in the comparison with August.  In relation to September of the previous year, there was expansion of 12.6%, the ninth consecutive positive rate.  With this, the accumulated index in the year was 6.8%. 

The index accumulated in the last 12 months (5.2%) increased in relation to the result of August (4.3%).  In the quarterly analysis, there was growth in comparison with the same period of the previous year (10.8%) as well as with the immediately previous quarter (0.5%).

In relation to September of the previous year, the industrial production had positive results in the manufacturing industry (12.6%) as well as in mining and quarrying (12.4%).  In the first one, the four segments expanded the production, especially cellulose and paper (17.4%) and food products and beverages (24.6%).

The industry of the state has been presenting positive results for four consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with same period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, the increase of 10.8% shows acceleration in the rhythm in relation to the first and second quarters, which registered, respectively, growth of 2.2% and 7.4%.  The major dynamism, from the second to the third quarter, reached four among five surveyed segments, especially basic metallurgy, which changed from a growth of 5.8% to 12.8%.

In the accumulated result in this year, positive results were observed in the manufacturing industry (6.6%) as well as in mining and quarrying (7.2%).  In the manufacturing industry, all the four segments increased, and the major results were observed in basic metallurgy (10.5%) and food products and beverages (11.7%).

In the comparison quarter with immediately previous quarter, the industry of the state, expanded by 0.5%, and increased for the fourth consecutive quarter, accumulating an increment of 10.5%.

Rio de Janeiro

The index of industrial production fell by 2.0% compared to August.  In the comparison with September 2005, there also was decrease (-2.2%).  With this, the indicator accumulated in the year was 2.5%, below the 3.2% accumulated until August.  The rate accumulated in the last 12 months (2.8%) also shows reduction in the rhythm of growth in relation to August (3.3%).  In the quarterly indicators, the production in the period July -September 2006 increased compared to the same quarter of the previous year (1.1%), but was 0.3% lower than in the immediately previous quarter.

In the comparison September 06/ September 05, the industrial sector of the state had as main negative contribution the performance of the manufacturing industry (-3.1%), once mining and quarrying increased by 1.6%. In the first sector, where 7 among 12 surveyed sectors had reduction in the production, the main negative results were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-18.8%); and in pharmaceuticals (-14.5%).  On the other hand, among the five segments in the manufacturing industry that expanded the production stood out edition and printing (13.8%), food products (7.6%) and basic metallurgy (4.1%).

The industry of the state is having positive results for 11 consecutive quarters, with a descending trend in the productive rhythm in the three quarters in this year: 5.1% in the period January-March; 1.7% in the second quarter; and 1.1% in the third, all the comparisons compared to the same period of the previous year.  The loss of dynamism from the second to the third quarter shows, mainly, the reduction in the rhythm of growth of the manufacturing industry, (from 2.3% to 1.0%), especially the pharmaceutical industry (from 14.8% to -16.9%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (from 14.2% to -4.4%).  On the other hand, basic metallurgy (from -10.0% to 3.1%), was the activity which more gained rhythm from the second to the third quarter.

The index accumulated in the year (2.5%) shows expansion of mining and quarrying (5.6%) as well as in manufacturing (1.8%), where 7 among 12 investigated segments increased.  In this case, the sector of food products (16.8%) was the main positive result, followed by edition and printing (8.7%), beverages (6.6%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (2.5%). Basic metallurgy (-5.7%) still is the segment which most influences negatively the overall index.

In the comparison quarter/ immediately previous quarter, it may be observed a slight reduction in the rhythm of industrial activity, which fell by 0.3% from the second to the third quarter of 2006.  It was the second consecutive negative result in this type of comparison, accumulating a loss of 0.7% in these two quarters.

São Paulo

In September, the industrial production fell by 2.7% compared to August.  The indicators in relation to similar periods of 2005, nevertheless, were positive: 0.7% compared to September 2005; 3.4% in the accumulated index in the year; and 2.9% in the accumulated index of the last 12 months.  In the quarterly indicators, the increase was of 0.2% in the comparison with the immediately previous quarter and 3.4% in relation to the third quarter of 2005.

In the comparison September 06/ September 05, there were positive changes in 13 among 20 surveyed segments.  Among those which most influenced positively the overall performance, stood out office machines and computer equipment (39.2%); machines and equipment (4.5%); and food products (2.6%).  On the other hand, automotive vehicles (-5.5%), other chemical products (-5.1%) and other transportation equipment (-15.2%) brought the most important negative results.

The industry of the state has positive results for 12 consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, the increase of 3.4% showed acceleration in the rhythm of growth in relation to the result of the second quarter (2.1%). This trend occurred in 15 segments, especially with machines and equipment, which changed from 0.1% in the second quarter to 5.9% in the third quarter; pharmaceuticals (from -4.0% to 2.6%) and other chemical products (from -3.9% to -0.3%).

In the index accumulated in the year, the increase of 3.4% was explained, mainly, by the positive contributions of 15 sectors, with the main highlights being observed in automotive vehicles (6.1%), food products (5.5%) and office machines and computer equipment (40.7%).  On the other hand, metal products (-4.5%), other chemical products (-1.0%) and other transportation equipment (-3.0%) brought the main negative results.

In the comparison quarter/immediately previous quarter, the index for the period July-September (0.2%) maintains the sequence of four positive results, causing a gain of 3.8% in the period.

Paraná

The industry fell by 2.7% in September compared to August. There also was decrease in the comparison of the third quarter of 2006 with the immediately previous quarter (-3.7%).  In the comparison with September 2005, the rate was negative (-8.0%), the fourth consecutive unfavorable result.  With this, the index accumulated in the year was -3.6%.  The index accumulated in the last 12 months (-4.1%) continued stable in relation to August (-4.0%).  In the quarterly index there was decrease of 3.3% compared to the third quarter of the previous year.

In relation to September 2005, 6 among 14 surveyed activities had negative rates, standing out automotive vehicles (-51.6%).  It can also be mentioned the negative contributions of wood (-14.8%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-4.9%).  On the other hand, the major positive influences were observed in edition and printing (19.3%) and machines and equipment (16.8%).

In the analysis by quarters, it can be observed the maintenance of negative results for five consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, the decrease of 3.3% showed acceleration in the rhythm of decrease, once the second quarter showed a rate of -2.1%. Five activities followed this trend, especially automotive vehicles (from -15.4% to -33.3%).

In the index accumulated of the year (-3.6%), eight segments decreased.  The major negative contributions were observed in automotive vehicles (-22.2%), wood (-13.1%) and chemical products (-6.3%).  On the other hand, the main positive result was observed in food products (4.7%).

Santa Catarina

In September, the industrial production increased by 0.2% compared to the previous month.  In the comparison with September 2005, there also was growth (3.0%). 

Hence, the indicator accumulated in the year is positive (0.3%). The rate accumulated in the last 12 months (-0.8%) shows deceleration in the rhythm of decrease in relation to August (-1.9%).  In the third quarter of 2006, there was growth compared to the same period of 2005 (2.7%) and stability (0.1%) in relation to the immediately previous quarter.

In the formation of the rate of 3.0% compared to September 2005, 6 among 11 investigated industrial activities increased, especially machines and equipment (40.0%), which had its major rate since August 1993.  It should also be observed the increments in rubber and plastic (21.7%) and automotive vehicles (17.2%).  On the other hand, the main negative result was observed in apparel (-20.3%), followed by food products (-6.1%) and wood (-14.8%).

In the third quarter of 2006, the industrial activity of the state increased by 2.7%, and changed the decrease observed in the period April-June (-3.2%), both the comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  This trend of acceleration reached nine industrial segments, being particularly important in machines and equipment, which changed from a growth of 10.8% in the second quarter to 31.9% in the period July-September, and food products, which decreased the rhythm of fall changing from -14.9% to -8.2%.

In the index accumulated in the year, the industry is growing again (0.3%), with expansion in six activities. The major positive results in the overall result were observed in automotive vehicles (29.9%) and in machines and equipment (13.5%).  It should be observed also the contribution of the sector of rubber and plastic (12.5%).  Among the sectors which had decrease in the production, food products (-9.9%) and wood (-19.2%) answered for the main negative results.

The quarterly index compared to the immediately previous index was almost stable (0.1%) from the second to the third quarter of 2006, after decreasing 1.3% in the previous period.

Rio Grande do Sul

The industry of the state increased by 2.4% in relation to August.  Also, it increased by 3.5% in the comparison of the third quarter with the immediately previous quarter.  In relation to September 2005, there was expansion of 1.4%, while the comparison with the third quarter of 2005 showed decrease of 1.3%.  In the indexes accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, there were decreases of 3.0% and 3.2% respectively.

In the comparison with September of the previous year, 11 among 14 surveyed groups had positive rates, being the most significant the ones of petroleum and alcohol production (22.9%), food products (8.9%) and cellulose and paper (15.6%).

The major negative results were observed in machines and equipment (-20.2%) and footwear and leather articles (-14.1%).

In the analysis by quarters, it can be observed that the industrial sector is presenting negative results for seven consecutive quarters, in the comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, the decrease of 1.3% showed the deceleration in the rhythm of decrease, once in the second quarter, the reduction had been of 5.8%.  In this trend prevailed the major dynamism observed in 8 among 14 surveyed segments mainly tobacco, which changed from -15.0% to -5.7%; and footwear and leather articles (from -15.2% to -7.4%).

The decrease of 3.0%, in the index accumulated in the year was a result mainly of the decreases in eight surveyed activities.  The major negative results were observed in machines and equipment (-18.4%), footwear and leather articles (-8.5%) and tobacco (-8.2%).  On the other hand, the industries of food products (6.0%) and automotive vehicles (3.8%) brought the major positive results.  In the comparison with the immediately previous quarter, the industry of the state increased by 3.5%, after three quarter with decrease.

Goiás

In September, the industrial production fell by 7.2% compared to August.  There was decrease also (-1.0%) in the comparison with the same month of the previous year.  In the other comparisons, the results were positive: the index accumulated January-September increased by 1.8%, and the one of the last 12 months, 0.9%.  In the quarterly indexes, the production increased by 2.1% compared to the third quarter of 2005 and fell by 0.8% in the comparison with the second quarter of 2006.

The decrease of 1.0% in the overall industry in relation to September of the previous year occurred due to the manufacturing industry (-1.6%), once mining and quarrying (6.8%) increased.  In the industry of manufacturing, the main negative results were observed in chemical products (-7.5%) and food products and beverages (-1.5%). 

On the other hand, basic metallurgy (5.1%) brought the main positive result.
In the analyses by quarters, it could be observed the third consecutive positive result, in the comparisons with the same period of the previous year.  In the third quarter of 2006, the growth of 2.1% showed acceleration of the rhythm, once in the second quarter it had shown expansion of 1.6%.  For this trend, it was important the reduction in the rhythm of decrease in mining and quarrying, which changed from -12.8% in the period April-June to -0.2% in the following quarter.

The expansion of 1.8% in the index accumulated in the year was supported by the growth of the manufacturing industry (3.1%), once mining and quarrying had decrease (-12.7%).  In mining and quarrying, all the segments had positive results. The most significant results were observed in chemical products (13.0%) and basic metallurgy (9.1%).

In the comparison quarter/ immediately previous quarter, the industry of the state registered decrease of 0.8% from the second to the third quarter, after reaching expansion of 3.9% in the previously quarter.
