In October, the Extended Consumer Price Index changed by 0.33%

The Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of October changed by 0.33% and was higher than the one of September (0.21%).  With this result, the index accumulated in the year was 2.33%, considerably lower than the one of the same period of the previous year (4.73%).  In the last twelve months, the rate accumulated 3.26%, a result which was lower than the one of the twelve immediately previous months (3.70%).  In October 2005, the index had been 0.75%.

The item food products (0.88%) was the main responsible for the hike in the IPCA from September to October.  The major individual contribution to the index of October (0.08 percentage points) was observed in the item meats, which in this period of off season  increased by 4.51%.  Nevertheless, the group food products and beverages, which changed from 0.08% to 0.88% from one month to the other one, continued presenting decrease in the prices of several products. Below are the monthly results of food products.

Besides food products, wages of domestic workers stood out with change of 1.39%. Other increases also occurred such as cigarettes (1.31%), hairdressing services (1.18%) and apparel (0.64%).

In relation to fuels, a significant decrease was observed in alcohol (-3.28%). Gasoline changed by -0.11%.

Regarding the indexes by areas, the major result was recorded in Belém (0.78%), where food products increased by 1.84%.  The lowest index was observed in Recife (0.12%).

For the calculation of the index of the month, prices collected in the period from September 27 to October 27 (reference period) were compared to prices charged from August 29 to September 26 (base period).  The IPCA is calculated by IBGE since 1980, it refers to families whose monetary income, from any source, ranges from 01 to 40 minimum salaries.  It encompasses nine metropolitan areas of the country, besides the municipality of Goiânia and Brasília.

INPC of October was 0.43%

The Consumer National Price Index (INPC) changed by 0.43% in October, above the result of September (0.16%).  The index accumulated in the year (1.75%) was lower than the one of the same period of the previous year (4.07%).  In the last twelve months (2.71%), the rate was lower than the one registered in the twelve immediately previous months (2.86%).  In October 2005, the index had been 0.58%. Food products increased by 1.10% and non-food products increased by 0.18%.

The INPC is calculated by the IBGE since 1979, it refers to families, headed by a salaried worker, with monetary income ranging from 01 to 06 minimum salaries. It encompasses nine metropolitan areas of the country, besides the municipality of Goiânia and Brasília. For the calculation of the index, prices collected in the period from September 27 to October 27 (reference period) were compared to prices charged from August 29 to September 26 (base period).

The major index by area was registered in Belém (0.91%).  The lowest result was observed in Recife (0.13%).
