In August, industry increased in nine among 14 surveyed areas

In relation to July, Bahia (3.2%), Goiás (2.1%), Minas Gerais (1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (1.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.9%) had the major hikes.  São Paulo (0.5%) increased below the national average (0.7%) and Amazonas had stability (0.0%).  Espírito Santo (-5.8%), Pernambuco (-3.0%), Ceará
(-2.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.2%) decreased.

In August 2006, the regional indexes of industrial production seasonally adjusted had a positive scenario compared to July, with growth in nine among fourteen surveyed localities. Bahia (3.2%), Goiás (2.1%), Minas Gerais (1.3%), Rio de Janeiro (1.1%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.9%) had the major hikes. São Paulo (0.5%), major industrial state of the country, increased but remained below the national average (0.7%).  The other localities with increase in the production were: Northeast Region and Pará (both with 0.5%), and Paraná (0.4%). Still in relation to July, the industry of Amazonas continued stable (0.0%), and Espírito Santo (-5.8%), Pernambuco (-3.0%), Ceará (-2.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.2%) had decreases.

In 2006 the industrial production increased in a moderate but permanent way. The quarterly moving average index shows a growth for five consecutive months, accumulating 1.3% in the period.  Nine surveyed areas also had positive results in the comparison. Pará (5.8%) and Goiás (4.4%) had the most relevant expansion. Amazonas (-6.6%), Pernambuco (-2.5%), Espírito Santo (-2.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.1%) had losses in this comparison.

In relation to August 2005, while the national index increased by 3.2%, the regional indexes of industrial production were positive in eleven localities. Pará (19.1%) has the only two digit rate in this comparison. Ceará (7.2%), Goiás (5.5%), Northeast Region (4.4%), São Paulo (4.0%) and Minas Gerais (3.7%) also had growth. With hikes below the national average were Santa Catarina (2.0%), Espírito Santo (1.9%), Bahia (1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (0.7%) and Pernambuco (0.3%).  With fall were Rio Grande do Sul (-2.6%), Amazonas (-1.3%) and Paraná (-0.6%).

In the index accumulated of the year, there were hikes in ten surveyed localities, especially Pará (15.4%), Ceará (8.0%) and Espírito Santo (6.0%). With results above the national average were Bahia (4.3%), Pernambuco and Minas Gerais (both with 4.2%), São Paulo (3.7%), Northeast Region (3.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.2%). Goiás (2.1%) increased below the overall average (2.8%). In this way, the localities with major hikes in the year were influenced by the maintenance of the dynamism of the typically export products.  On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-3.5%) indicated the most intense decrease, showing still, the unfavorable performance of the footwear and agricultural sectors. 

A slight increase in the rhythm of growth from the end of the first semester of 2006 (2.7%) to the period July-August (3.3%) was observed for the total of the country, both comparisons with similar periods of 2005.  This acceleration reached ten among fourteen surveyed regions, being more pronounced in Pará, which changed from 13.5% in the first semester to 20.9% to the period July-August, and in Espírito Santo (from 4.7% to 9.8%).  On the other hand, the major deceleration between the two periods occurred in Bahia (from 5.9% to -0.3%) mainly due to the decrease, in petroleum refining and alcohol production and other chemical products, sectors with more participation in the industrial structure of the state.

Amazonas maintains stability

In August, the industrial production of Amazonas was stable (0.0%) in relation to July, in the series without seasonal influence.  There were decreases in relation to August of the previous year (-1.3%) and in the index accumulated in the year (-2.4%).  The index accumulated in the last twelve months shows the deceleration trend, changing from -0.1% in July to -1.1% in August.


In relation to August 2005, there was fall (-1.3%), with negative results in six among eleven surveyed activities. Electronic material and communication equipment (-19.5%), the segment with major participation, was the main negative result, influenced mainly by the reduction in the manufacturing of mobile telephones and TV sets.  The most important positive results were observed in food products and beverages (37.7%), metal products (50.5%) and other transport equipment (11.1%). In these segments stood out the items manufacturing of syrups for beverage elaboration; shaving equipment (due to the major dynamism of exports); and motorcycles.

In the index accumulated in the year, the decrease (-2.4%) was a consequence of the falls in six among eleven sectors, being the most significant electronic material and communication equipment (-10.6%), followed by chemical products (-30.4%).  In these segments, stood out the decreases of mobile telephones and radios; and   photographic films and paper, respectively.  The most important positive influences were observed in other transport equipment (15.0%) and metal products (21.9%), especially the items motorcycles and parts and accessories; and shaving equipment, respectively.

 

Pará grew by 0.5%

In August, the industry of Pará increased by 0.5% in relation to July, in the series without seasonal influences, fourth consecutive positive result, accumulating expansion of 8.0%. As a consequence, the quarterly moving average, increasing 0.9% from the quarters closed between August and July maintained the ascending trend which began in August of the previous year.


In the other comparisons, two-digit positive rates can be observed: 19.1% in relation to August 2005, 15.4% in the index accumulated in the year and 11.5% in the index accumulated in the last twelve months, which continue ascending since February.

In relation to August 2005, the industry of the state increased by 19.1%, thirteenth consecutive positive result, with five among six surveyed segments with hike.  The major positive influences were observed in mining and quarrying (14.4%), basic metallurgy (27.3%) and food products and beverages (46.9%), influenced by the major manufacturing of the items: iron ores; aluminum oxides and frozen crustaceans.  The only fall was observed in wood (-3.1%), with the decrease in compacted wood.

The index accumulated of the year increased by 15.4%, with hikes in five among six segments.  The most relevant results were observed in mining and quarrying (18.3%), with expansion, mainly, in iron ores and basic metallurgy (19.0%), with increase in the production of aluminum oxide. This performance in these sectors shows mainly the major dynamism of foreign sales. Wood (-6.0%) was once again the only activity with decrease.

Industrial production in the Northeast increased by 0.5%

In August, the seasonally adjusted index of industrial production in the Northeast, increased by 0.5%, after increasing by 2.2% in July.  In relation to August 2005 there was hike of 4.4%, accumulating 3.4% in the year and 2.2% in the last twelve months, maintaining an ascending trend since May.

The hike of 4.4% in relation to August 2005 was the tenth, in this indicator, influenced positively by eight among eleven industrial surveyed segments, especially food products and beverages (10.0%), influenced by the major production of beneficiated cashew nuts, and peanuts and toasted cashew nuts. Other important positive contributions were cellulose and paper (19.0%), due to the increase in the manufacturing of cellulose and kraft paper for packaging; and chemical products (3.7%), due to the items ammonium sulfonate, and adobes and fertilizers.  On the other hand, the major negative results were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-7.1%), especially the decrease in the production of diesel oil and gasoline; and in mining and quarrying (-5.7%), due to the decrease in the extraction of crude petroleum oil and natural gas.

In the indicator accumulated of the year, the industry of the Northeast increased by 3.4%, with positive rates in eight among eleven surveyed sectors.  The major positive contributions were cellulose and paper (26.7%), due to the increase in the manufacturing of cellulose and non- covered paper; of basic metallurgy (14.0%), due to the increase in the production of copper square bars, profiles and bars and carbon steel square bars; and of textiles (8.7%), with the major manufacturing of cotton threads and cotton thread and mesh of artificial fibers.  The main negative results were observed in apparel (-18.5%) and in mining and quarrying (-3.7%), due to the decreases in apparel for professional use, and crude petroleum oils.

Ceará decreases by 2.2%

In August, the industrial production of Ceará, already seasonally adjusted, fell by 2.2%, after growing for two consecutive months, a period in which it accumulated an expansion of 3.0%.  In the comparison with August 2005 there was a hike of 7.2%.  The indicator accumulated in the year increased by 8.0%, and the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months increased from July (0.8%) to August (1.6%).

In relation to August 2005, the industry of Ceará increased by 7.2%, with positive rates in six among ten activities.  The major positive contributions were observed in food products and beverages (20.1%), due to the increase in the production of peanuts and tasted cashew nuts, and beneficiated cashew nuts; and textiles (13.1%), with the major manufacturing of cotton threads and mesh of artificial fibers.  The main negative results were petroleum refining and alcohol production (-29.0%), due to the reduction in the production of gasoline, diesel oil and fuel oils; and basic metallurgy (-71.9%), due to the decrease in the manufacturing of  carbon steel square bars, and of ingots, iron slugs and blocks  and carbon steel plates. This atypical decrease is due to the stoppage of an important company of the sector.

The industrial production of Ceará accumulated 8.0% in the year, with positive rates in seven among ten sectors.  The highlights were: textiles (16.4%); electric machines, material and equipment (94.0%); and petroleum refining and alcohol production (26.4%).  The high growth of electric machines, material and equipment occurred, mainly, due to the government orders.  The most negative influences were observed in apparel (-15.5%) and in non-metallic minerals (-9.8%), due to the lower manufacturing of long pants for feminine use, apparel for professional use; and cement.

Industry of Pernambuco fell by 3.0%

In August, the industrial production of Pernambuco, in the series without seasonal influence, fell by 3.0%   compared to July, after being stable (0.0%) compared to June.  In relation to August 2005, the results continue positive: 0.3% in relation to the same month of the previous year and 4.2% in the accumulated index of the year.  The index accumulated of the last twelve months (4.1%) registered a slight decrease compared to July (4.5%).

For the growth of 0.3% in relation to August 2005, contributed positively six among eleven industrial surveyed sectors, with food products and beverages (7.1%) bringing the major influence.  It can also be mentioned the positive results which came from basic metallurgy (12.4%), due to the major production of carbon steel square bars; and of cellulose and paper (32.0%), due to the items, paper sacks and bags, and wavy cardboard boxes.  Among the five activities with decrease, the most relevant results were chemical products (-17.5%), due to the reduction in the production of styrene-butadiene rubber and oxygen; and electric machines, equipment and material, showing the reduction of electric cells and batteries.

The index accumulated in the year in Pernambuco increased by 4.2%, with positive rates in seven among eleven sectors.  The major positive results were food products and beverages (8.0%), influenced by the increase in the production of cachaça, beer and draft beer; in basic metallurgy (11.7%), due to the increase in the manufacturing of carbon steel square bars, and aluminum plates and bands; and in rubber and plastic (38.6%), due to the increase in the production of plastic films; and plastic hoses, pipes and tubes.  The main negative results were observed in chemical products (-13.5%); electric material, equipment and machines (-8.3%); and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-41.9%).

Industry of Bahia increased by 3.2%

In August, the industrial production of Bahia seasonally adjusted increased by 3.2%, changing three consecutive falls, when it accumulated a decrease of 4.2%.  In relation to August 2005, the industry of the state increased by (1.0%).  In July, a decrease of 1.6% was observed.  There was a hike of 4.3% in the index accumulated of the year as in the one of the last twelve months.

The industry of the state increased by 1.0% in relation to August 2005, with positive rates in four among nine surveyed activities. The main positive result was observed in cellulose and paper (19.6%).  There were increases in basic metallurgy (6.4%), due to the major manufacturing of carbon steel square bars; and carbon steel ingots, slugs and blocks; and in chemical products (1.4%), due to the items octanol and low density polyethylene.  The major negative results were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production (-5.7%) and in mining and quarrying (-4.1%), influenced mainly by the decrease in the production of diesel oil, and gasoline; and crude petroleum oils and natural gas.

The index accumulated in the year increased by 4.3%, with hikes in five among nine investigated segments. The main positive influence was observed in cellulose and paper (30.6%); followed by petroleum refining and alcohol production (5.2%) and basic metallurgy (13.8%).  In these activities stood out, respectively, the items cellulose and non-covered paper; diesel oil, and naphtha; and copper square bars, profiles and bars, and carbon steel square bars.  The main negative contributions were observed in food products and beverages (-2.7%), due to the lower production of flower and “pellets” of the extraction of soy bean oil, and powdered milk; and chemical products (-0.6%), due to the fall in the manufacturing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and linear polyethylene.

Minas increased by 1.3%

The index of industrial production of Minas Gerais increased by 1.3% in August already seasonally adjusted.  In relation to August 2005, there was a hike of 3.7%, and in the index accumulated index of the year, an increase of 4.2%.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months remained similar from July (4.5%) to August (4.4%).

The expansion of 3.7% in relation to August 2005 is supported in the positive results of eight among thirteen surveyed activities, with automotive vehicles (22.3%) and basic metallurgy (6.0%) as the main contributors to the overall average. In these segments stood out: automobiles; and steel unsealed tubes, pipes and profiles and steel slugs or plates, blocks and ingots.  There was growth in mining and quarrying (5.1%), influenced by the major extraction of iron ore.  Metal products (-27.3%) was the major negative influence, due to the decrease in the production of iron and steel structures.

The index accumulated in the year increased by 4.2%, with growth in the manufacturing industry (3.4%), as in mining and quarrying (9.0%).  In this last one, second major positive contribution, stood out the performance of iron ores.  In relation to the manufacturing industry, nine among twelve surveyed activities increased, standing out: automotive vehicles (9.6%), basic metallurgy (3.6%) and food products (4.7%).  In these segments, the major influences came from the items: automobiles; steel slugs or plates, blocks and ingots; and yogurt. With  fall, once again, stood out metal products (-14.6%).

Industry of Espírito Santo fell by 5.8%

In August, the industrial production of Espírito Santo fell by 5.8%, in the series with seasonal adjustment.  It was the second consecutive fall, accumulating decrease (-6.8%) between June and August of this year. In relation to August 2005, there was expansion of 1.9%, and there also were hikes in the index accumulated in the year (6.0%) and in the last twelve months (4.3%).

In relation to August of the previous year, the industrial production of the state increased by 1.9%, showing the favorable performance of mining and quarrying (9.6%), the main positive contribution for the overall average. The manufacturing industry fell by 1.5%, with decrease in two among four surveyed sectors, with cellulose and paper (-14.0%) with the major negative result.  Among the groups with increase of production, food products and beverages (8.6%) was the main result, due mainly to the increment in the manufacturing of frozen cattle meat and wheat flour.

The index accumulated in the year, compared to the same period of 2005, increased by 6.0%, showing hikes in the manufacturing industry (5.8%) and in mining and quarrying (6.5%). In the manufacturing industry, three among four surveyed sectors increased, standing out basic metallurgy (11.1%) and food products and beverages (10.1%).  The only negative result came from cellulose and paper (-0.6%).
Industry of Rio de Janeiro increased by 1.1%

In the series with seasonal adjustment, the industry of the state increased by 1.1% in August, the second positive consecutive result, with hike of 1.8% in two months.  In relation to August 2005, the sector continues positive (0.7%), a performance observed since August of the previous year.  The index accumulated in the year (3.2%) and in the last twelve months (3.3%) are above the national average (2.8% and 2.2%, respectively).

The increase of 0.7%, in relation to August 2005 is supported in hikes of six among thirteen surveyed groups.  Mining and quarrying (3.4%), after two months in fall, recorded again one of the main positive results. In mining and quarrying, with slight positive change (0.1%), the groups other chemical products (13.8%), food products (12.1%), automotive vehicles (16.9%) and edition and printing (11.7%) brought the most relevant positive contributions.  The falls which stood out were observed in pharmaceutical industry (-20.4%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-5.1%) and basic metallurgy (-4.0%), influenced, mainly, by the reduction in the manufacturing of remedies, aviation kerosene and tin plates, respectively.

In the index accumulated in the year, compared to the same period of 2005, the industry of the state increased by 3.2%, with the major part (eight) of the thirteen surveyed groups showing increment in the production. The performance of mining and quarrying (6.1%) during the year, supported mainly in the extraction of petroleum, was one of the main determinants for the positive result in the overall index.  In the manufacturing industry (2.5%), also with growth, food products (18.1%) brought the most important positive result. There was also a favorable performance in the groups petroleum refining and alcohol production (5.6%), edition and printing (8.0%) and beverages (7.2%).  On the other hand, the major negative contribution continues to be observed in basic metallurgy (-7.0%).

Industry of São Paulo increased by 0.5%

In August, the industrial production of São Paulo seasonally adjusted increased by 0.5%, second consecutive positive rate, accumulating an expansion of 2.2% between June and August. In relation to August 2005 there was growth of 4.0%, fourth consecutive positive result.  Hence, the sector accumulated an increment of 3.7% in January-August in relation to the same period of the previous year.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months, increased by 2.7%, and shows stability in the rhythm of expansion from July to August.

The growth of 4.0%, in relation to August 2005 was generalized, reaching eighteen among twenty segments, with electronic material and communication equipment (20.2%), office machines and computer equipment (56.0%) and automotive vehicles (5.0%) with the main positive results.  The negative results came from pharmaceuticals (-7.9%) and metal products (-1.5%).

The industry of the state accumulated a change of 3.7% in the year, with positive rates in fifteen among twenty groups.  The major positive influences came from automotive vehicles (7.5%), food products (5.7%) and office machines and computer equipment (40.8%).  The main negative results came from metal products (-4.5%) and rubber and plastic (-1.2%).

Paraná increased by 0.4%

The index of industrial production of Paraná increased by 0.4% in August already seasonally adjusted. In relation to August 2005 there was decrease (-0.6%), accumulating -3.0% in the year and -4.0% in the last twelve months. This last indicator shows a slight decrease in the rhythm of fall in relation to July (-4.3%).

In the monthly index, the industry of Paraná fell by 0.6%, with only six among fourteen surveyed activities with fall. Automotive vehicles (-15.6%), edition and printing (-20.0%) and wood (-15.6%) brought the main negative results.  The major positive highlights were observed in food products (9.5%), mainly due to the increase in the production of crystallized sugar and refined soybean oil; and of machines and equipment (14.9%), favored by the increase in machines to work raw material for the manufacturing of cellulose paste.

The indicator accumulated in the year shows reduction of 3.0%, with half of the fourteen surveyed groups bringing fall in the production.  The major negative contribution in the formation of the overall rate was observed in automotive vehicles (-17.6%) due, mainly, to the decrease in the production of the items injection pumps for vehicles and automobiles.  It can also be mentioned the decreases observed in wood (-12.9%) and in machines and equipment (-5.2%), as a consequence, mainly, of the reduction in the manufacturing of plywood and machines to work raw material for the manufacturing of cellulose paste.  On the other hand, the main positive result came from food products (4.9%), especially the increase in the items crystallized sugar and refined soybean oil.

Santa Catarina fell by 0.2%

In August, the industrial production of Santa Catarina fell by 0.2% compared to July, in the series with seasonal adjustment, the third consecutive negative rate, accumulating a loss of 0.9%.  In the comparison with August 2005 the industrial sector of the state increased by 2.0% and records expansion for the second consecutive month in this type of comparison.  However, the indicator accumulated in the year shows a slight decrease (-0.1%), a result slightly better than the one of July (-0.4%).  The index accumulated in the twelve months maintains a trend of reduction in the rhythm of decrease, changing from -2.5% in July to -1.9% in August.

In the monthly indicator, the hike of 2.0% in the overall average in the industry of the state shows mainly the positive performance of six among eleven investigated activities.  The main positive contribution was observed in machines and equipment (25.7%) considerably influenced not only by the major manufacturing of compressors for refrigerators, but also by a low base of comparison, due to a stoppage for vacations in a great company of the sector, in August 2005.  It is worth mentioning the positive influence, although in a lower scale, of automotive vehicles (24.4%), as a consequence of the increase in the production of buses and trucks bodies.  The adverse performances of food products (-8.7%) and of wood (-15.7%) answer for the most significant negative results.

The index accumulated in the year, compared to same period of 2005, shows a slight decrease (-0.1%), with five among eleven surveyed segments showing reduction in the production.  The main negative results still are food products (-10.4%) and wood (-19.7%), influenced by the lower dynamism of poultry pluck, giblets and meats, in the first group, and plywood plates, in the second.  Among the five activities which had expansion, stood out automotive vehicles (31.9%) and machines and equipment (11.0%).  It can also be mentioned the hike in the group rubber and plastic (11.3%).

Industry of RS increases by 0.9%

In August, the industrial production of Rio Grande do Sul, seasonally adjusted, increased by 0.9%, second positive consecutive rate, accumulating increase of 2.8%.  In relation to August 2005 there was fall of 2.6%, and decreases of 3.5% in the index accumulated in the year and 3.6% in the index accumulated in the last twelve months.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industry of the state fell by 2.6%, twelfth consecutive negative rate, with six among fourteen surveyed groups showing decrease in the production.  The main negative results in the overall average of the industry were observed in machines and equipment (-16.6%), petroleum refining and alcohol (-13.3%) and metal products (-18.3%).  The major positive influences came from food products (10.6%), which brought increase in the production, mainly, of cattle and pork meats; and edition and printing (21.8%), due, mainly, to the increase in the production of newspapers.

The index accumulated in the year fell by 3.5%, in relation to the same period of the previous year, with eight among fourteen activities showing reduction in the production.  The major negative results came from machines and equipment (-18.2%), footwear and leather articles (-7.8%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-9.5%).  Food products (5.6%) and automotive vehicles (3.6%) brought the major positive results.

Industry of Goiás increased by 2.1%

In August, the index of industrial production of Goiás, seasonally adjusted, increased by 2.1%.  There was hike of 5.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, of 2.1% in the index accumulated in the year and of 0.5% in the index accumulated in the last twelve months.

The increase of 5.5% in relation to August 2005 was supported in the growth of three among five surveyed segments. The major contributions were observed in food products and beverages (4.6%), showing the major production of soft drinks and mayonnaise; and of chemical products (25.3%).  On the other hand, non-metallic minerals (-9.5%) and mining and quarrying (-4.2%) brought the two negative results, consequence mainly of the diminishment in the production of the items cement and amianthus, respectively.

The hike of 2.1% in the index accumulated in the year, compared to same period of the previous year, was a consequence of the growth of all the segments of the manufacturing industry (3.8%), with the more relevant results observed in chemical products (17.2%) and food products and beverages (1.3%).  In these sectors, there were hikes in remedies and clothes softener, in the first group; and soft drinks and beers, in the second.  On the other hand, the only decrease was registered by mining and quarrying (-14.9%).
