In September, Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA) changed by 0.21%

Index was higher than the index of August (0.05%). Indexes accumulated in the year (2.0%) and in the last twelve months (3.70%) are below the indexes of September of the previous year (3.95% and 3.84%, respectively).

The Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of September changed by 0.21% and was higher than in the previous month (0.05%). The index accumulated 2.00% in the year, a result considerably lower than in the same period of the previous year (3.95%).  In the last twelve months, the rate accumulated 3.70%, a result lower than the 3.84% relative to the twelve immediately previous months.  In September 2005, the index had been 0.35%.

The main influences on the IPCA were expenditures with cigarettes (from 0.00% in August to 2.72% in September), wages of domestic workers (from 2.26% to 1.97%), water and sewage treatment (from 0.51% to 1.89%) and apparel (from 0.09% to 0.46%).

While food products continued stable (0.07% in August and 0.08% in September), non-food products increased (from 0.04% to 0.24%).  The major individual contribution to the index of the month (0.06 percentage points) was observed in the item domestic workers (1.97%), a change, nevertheless, lower than the one of August (2.26%). In conformity to the methodology used in the last months, wages of domestic workers are showing the influence of the readjustment of the minimum wage which occurred in this year.  In the table below, the monthly changes of this item, in 2006 and in the previous year.

In water and sewage treatment (1.89%) the hike was a consequence mainly of the metropolitan area of São Paulo (6.35%), where the average readjustment was 6.7%, since August 31st. Cigarettes (2.72%) show the readjustment which occurred since September 7th, in some brands, in eight among eleven surveyed areas. Regarding apparel (0.46%) they increased from one month to the next as a consequence of the complete commercialization of the new collection in the market.

On the other hand, important items fell or had a relative stability.  Gasoline (-0.05%) continued stable, while the liter of alcohol (-3.76%) turned cheaper.

The group food products and beverages (0.08%), although still showing stability of prices, had some items with hike: tomatoes (17.33%), chicken (5.27%), jerked beef (4.81%), fish (2.46%) and meats (2.32%). However, the majority of food products turned cheaper.
The major result by area was observed in Rio de Janeiro (0.41%), where some items increased more than the overall average, as for example food products (0.44%) and medicines (0.44%). The lowest indexes were observed in Brasília (-0.01%) and Belém (0.03%).  The table below shows the results by areas.

The IPCA is calculated by the IBGE since 1980 and it refers to families with monetary income, from any source, ranging from 1 to 40 minimum salaries.  It includes nine metropolitan areas of the country, besides the municipalities of Goiânia and Brasília. To calculate the index of September, prices collected from August 29th to September 26th (reference period) were compared to prices charged from July 29th to August 28th (base period). 

INPC of September was 0.16%

The Consumer National Price Index (INPC) changed by 0.16% in September, above the result of August (-0.02%).  The accumulated index of the year (1.32%) was considerably lower than the one of August of the previous year (3.47%). The index of the last twelve months (2.86%) was almost the same as the one of the immediately previous twelve months (2.85%). In September 2005 the index had been 0.15%.

In the month, food products changed by 0.09% while non-food products increased by 0.19%.  The highest index by area was registered in Rio de Janeiro (0.34%), and the lowest indexes in Belém (-0.14%) and Brasília (-0.18%), areas which had deflation (see table below).
