With this result, the index accumulated in the year was 1.92%, and in the last twelve months, 3.69%. Considering the months of July, August and September, the IPCA-E rate is 0.22%.

The prices of most items surveyed fell this month, being the groups transportation (from 0.23% to -0.38%) and food products and beverages (from 0.18% to -0.06%) the main items accounting for the deceleration from one month to the other.

In the group transportation (-0.38%), important items in the diet of Brazilian families had their prices reduced. The liter of gasoline, for example, which had risen by 0.46% in August, became 0.38% cheaper, whereas alcohol fell even more: -2.59%, versus rise of 1.87% in the previous month. The fares of intercity and interstate buses, which rose by 3.13% and 5.97%, respectively, fell to -0.15% and -0.34% in September.

Among food products (-0.06%), several items got significantly cheaper. On the contrary, jerked meat (8.39%), chicken (3.15%) and meat (2.23%) were the highlights due to the rise of prices.

Besides food products and transportation, important items such as medicines (-0.26%), household appliances (-0.28%), articles for personal hygiene (-0.55%) and cleaning articles (-0.37%) also fell.

The September index decreased in comparison with the previous month, even with the hike of 1.97% of salaries of domestic workers, which was the main individual contribution to the rate (0.06 percentage points), as a result of the readjustment of the minimum wage occurred in the year. Water and sewage treatment (1.19%) was also partially affected by the readjustment of 4.0% occurred in Rio de Janeiro (since August 1st) and by the readjustment of 6.71% in effect in São Paulo (since August 31), influenced the result in September.

In terms of indexes by area, the highest result was registered in Recife (0.24%) and the lowest one, in Belém (-0.28%).

The prices for the calculation of the IPCA-15 were collected between August 15 and September 12 and compared to those in effect between July 14 and August 14. The IPCA -15 refers to families with monetary income, from whatever source, ranging from 1 to 40 minimum salaries. It encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. The same methodology is used to calculate both IPCA and IPCA-15. The difference between the two indexes lies in the period of data collection. The other index, IPCA-E, consists of IPCA-15 accumulated by quarter.
