Unemployment rate was 10.7% in July

The average real income (R$1,028,50) fell by 0.7% in relation to June and increased by 3.4% over the figure for July 2005. The unemployment rate remained statistically stable in comparison with June (10.4%), but increased by 1.3 percentage points in comparison with July 2005 (9.4%).


EMPLOYED POPULATION (PO)

In July, the Employed Population (20,2 million workers) did not change in relation to June, and increased by 2.1% when compared to July 2005. Men made up 55.8% of this group, and women, 44.2%. Persons between 25 and 49 years of age accounted for 63.5% of the employed population, and those with 11 or more years of schooling, for 51.8%. 

 

The percentage of persons employed in enterprises with 11 or more workers was 51.8%. In the enterprises with 6 to 10 persons it was 6.0%, and in those with up to 5 persons , it was 35.9%.

In July, 48.1% of the employed population worked from 40 to 44 hours per week and about 33.7% worked for over 45 hours. On average, 66.4% of the employed population in the six areas surveyed, had had that job for at least 2 years; 11.4% for between 1 to 2 years; 19.9% for between one month and  one year; and only 2.3% had had that job for at least 1 month.

Main Groups of Activities of the Employed Population

 

Mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (17.6% of the PO). In the group of six areas, there was increase of 2.9%. In comparison with the previous year, stability. In the analysis by area, only the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro changed (7.8%). In comparison with July 2005, hikes occurred in Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro (7.7% and 9.5%, respectively).

 

Construction (7.1% of the employed population). In the group of six areas, in both comparisons, there was stability. By area, there was no change in June. In comparison with July 2005 there was fall in Recife (-15.8%).

 

Trade, repair of automotive vehicles and of personal and domestic objects and retail trade of fuels (19.5% of the PO). There was stability  in terms of both June 2006 and July 2005. By area, there was no change in comparison with June. In relation to July last year, there was change only in Recife (10.5%).

 

Services rendered to enterprises, rents, real estate activities and financial mediation (14.1% of the PO). There was stability in comparison with June and increase of 6.2% in relation to July 2005. In the analysis by area, there was no change in comparison with June. In relation to July 2005 there were changes in Salvador (13.8%), Belo Horizonte (14.1%) and Porto Alegre (10.1%).

 

Education, health, social services, public administration, defense and social security (15.9% of the PO) In the group of six areas, in both comparisons, there was stability. In comparison with June, there was stability in all the areas. In the annual comparison, there was hike in Belo Horizonte (8.7%).

 

Domestic Services (8.4% of the PO) There was stability in the monthly and annual comparisons. In the analysis by area, there were changes in Recife (21.4%) and Salvador (-6.5%) in relation to June and stability in the six metropolitan areas, in the annual comparison.

 

Other services (lodging, transportation, urban cleaning and personal services) (16.9% of the PO) In the six areas, there was stability in both comparisons. In the analysis by area, there was fall of 8.5% in Porto Alegre, in the monthly comparison, and hike of 11.7% in Belo Horizonte, in relation to July 2005.

Employed Persons by classes of workers in the labor market

 

Employees WITH a formal contract in the private sector (41.4% of the PO) In relation to June 2006, there was stability. In comparison with July, there was hike of 5.1%, that is, approximately over 408 thousand persons with a formal contract. Considering the analysis by area, in the monthly comparison, there was fall (-4.2%) in Recife. In relation to July 2005, there were hikes in Belo Horizonte 98.1%), Rio de Janeiro (8.2%) and São Paulo (5.4%).

 

Employees WITHOUT a formal contract in the private sector (14.9% of the PO) In the average of six metropolitan areas, there was stability in both comparisons. I the monthly comparison, there was stability in all the areas. In comparison with July 2005, there was change in Belo Horizonte.

 

Own-account workers (19.1%) of the PO) In the average of six metropolitan areas, there was stability in both comparisons. In the analysis by area, there was stability in the monthly comparison. With reference to July 2005, there was hike in Belo Horizonte (8.1%) and in Porto Alegre (7.8%).

UNEMPLOYED PERSONS (PD)

 

The number of unemployed persons remained constant in comparison with the June figure. In relation to July 2005, there was hike of 17.9% that is, over 368 thousand persons looking for a job in the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed.

 

There was stability in all the areas, in comparison with June. In relation to July 2005, there was stability in Salvador and hikes in Recife (26.9%), Belo Horizonte (21.2%), Rio de Janeiro (25.0%), São Paulo (18.3%) and Porto Alegre (29.2%).

 

Among the unemployed, 55.1% were women; 8.2% were between 15 and 17 years of age; 39.2% were between 18 and 24 years of age; 45.9%were between 25 and 49 years of age, and 6.2% were 50 years of age or over. Besides, 20.7% were searching for their first job, and 25.8% were head of the household.

 

With reference to the job-searching period, 23.8% had been looking for a job for up to 30 days; 47.6% for between 31 days and 6 months; 9.1% for between 7 and 11 months; 19.5% for at least 1 year.

 

In July 2003, 40.3% of the unemployed persons had finished at least high school; in July 2004, the percentage was 43.3%. In July 2005 this figure reached 45.8%, and, in the latest survey, it was 47.7%.

 

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

 

In July 2006, the unemployment rate was 10.7% in the group of six areas surveyed, remaining stable in comparison with june (10.4%) and increasing by 1.3 percentage points in comparison with July 2005 (9.4%).

REAL AVERAGE INCOME

In July 2006, the real average income usually earned in the group of six areas was R$ 1,028,50, with fall of 0.7% in relation to June and hike of 3.4% in relation to July 2005.

 

In comparison with June, there was recovery in Salvador (6.0%), elo Horizonte (0.4%) nd Porto Alegre (1.7%). In Recife (-5.0%) and São Paulo (-2.0%), there was fall; in Rio de Janeiro, stability.

 

In the annual comparison, there was recovery of income in al the regions: Recife (2.3%), Salvador (6.7%) Belo Horizonte (3.3%), Rio de Janeiro (5.4%), São Paulo (2.8%) and Porto Alegre (3.6%).
