Industrial employment changed by -0.1% from May to June

The rate was the same (-0.1%) in comparison with June 2005; this was the ninth consecutive negative indicator in this type of comparison. The indicator accumulated in the year decreased by 0.5%; the index accumulated in the last 12 months, by 0.3%. The number of employed persons fell by 0.4% in the second quarter of 2006, in comparison with the same period in 2005. It was, however, 0.4% higher than in the first quarter this year (seasonally adjusted series). There has been a trend to stability of  this quarterly moving average indicator, with change of 0.1% in the quarters ended in May and June.  

In relation to June 2005, the number of employed persons fell in 7 of the 14 areas surveyed

 

In comparison with June 2005, the number of workers decreased in 7 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main highlights by area were: Rio Grande do Sul (-8.5%), Northeast Region (-1.6%) and Paraná (-2.2%). In the Rio Grande do Sul industry, footwear and leather articles represented the biggest negative contribution; in Paraná and in the Northeast Region, the main negative pressure came from apparel (-4.1% and -10.7%, respectively). In the total result of the country, footwear and leather articles (-12.6%), machinery and equipment (-6.4%) and apparel (-5.5%) were the main negative pressures.

 

On the other hand, food products and beverages (7.4%); machines and household and communication equipment (5.9%); petroleum refinement and alcohol production (12.8%) were the main highlights. Among the areas surveyed, the North and Central West Regions (9.8%), São Paulo (1.1%) and Pernambuco (3.2) led the positive impacts on the overall index.

 

The quarterly indexes, in comparison with the same period in the previous year, show that the reduction of industrial employment occurred at a more moderate rhythm between the first (-0.6%) and the second (-0.4%) quarters this year. The second quarter of 2006 was the third with consecutive decrease of this indicator.

 

In terms of the index accumulated in the first semester of 2006, the number of employed persons decreased (-0.5%). In the total result for the country, 11 subsectors stood out as negative contributions, and the most relevant were: footwear and leather articles (-13.4%), machinery and equipment (-7.9%) and wood (-11.8%). By area, the most relevant contributions among the eight areas where the number of workers decreased came from Rio Grande do Sul (-9.1%), Northeast Region (-2.8%) and Paraná (-3.3%).

On the other hand, in the North and Central West regions (9.7%), in São Paulo (0.8%) and  Minas Gerais (2.0%), there was increase of the level of occupation. By sector, in the country, the main increases were observed for food products and beverages (8.8%); machines and household and communication equipment (5.6%); and means of transportation (2.9%).

 

Number of hours paid increases by 0.2% in relation to both May and June 2006

 

In June, the number of hours paid to workers of industry increased by 0.2% in comparison with May, considering seasonally adjusted results. In comparison with June 2005, this indicator also changed by 0.2%, whereas the rates for longer periods, accumulated in the year and in the last 12 months, had negative change of 0.1% each.

 

Considering June 2005, the number of hours paid increased in 6 of the 14 areas and in 8 of the 18 activities surveyed. By subsector, the major positive contributions came from: food products and beverages (5.8%); machines and electronic and communication equipment (9.1%); petroleum refining and alcohol production 916.1%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-8.1%) and apparel (-6.3%) were the most relevant negative impacts.

 

Still in the monthly comparison, the areas which can be considered the main positive influences to the overall result were São Paulo (2.5%), North and Central West regions (8.3%) and Minas Gerais (1.4%). In  São Paulo, the number of hours paid increased in 9 of the 18 activities surveyed, and the most relevant contributions came from food products and beverages (8.1%); machines and electronic and communication equipment (10.6%), and other products from the manufacturing industry (10.9%). In the North and Central west regions, food products and beverages and machines and electronic and communication equipment, each one with rate of 18.2%, were the main positive contributions. In Minas Gerais, the subsectors of food products and beverages  (13.9%) was the main positive impact.

 

The main negative contributions, on the contrary, came from Rio Grande do Sul (-8.1%) and Paraná (-3.9%), where footwear and leather articles (-11.45) and wood (-14.2%), respectively, were the main highlights.

 

The change in the number of hour paid was stable from the first (-0.1%) to the second quarter (-0.1%) of 2006, both compared to the same period in the previous year.

 

The rate accumulate in the first quarter had negative change of 0.1%, with decrease in 9 areas and 11 subsectors. The areas responsible for the main reductions were Rio Grande do Sul (-8.1%), Paraná (-5.3%) and the Northeast region (-2.9%). São Paulo (2.3%) and the North and the Central West region (9.7%) were the main positive contributors. In terms of subsectors, the most relevant negative impacts came from wood (-13.95) and machinery and equipment (-6.5%). The industries of food products and beverages (6.6%) and machines and electronic and communication equipment (9.7%) accounted for the main positive impacts.

 

The quarterly indexes, in comparison with the immediately previous quarter (seasonally adjusted series), show that, in the period April-June 2006 and for the first time since the second quarter of 2005, there was increase of three variables: employment, 0.4%; number of hours paid, 0.2% and production, 0.5%.

Payroll also increases by 0.2% between May and June

 

The payroll of industrial workers, in the seasonally adjusted series, increased by 0.2% in June, in comparison with May. With this result, the second consecutive positive one, the real payroll has accumulated increase of 0.7% since April.

 

Concerning the remaining indicators, compared to similar periods in the previous year, the results were also positive: 1.4% in relation to June 2005; 0.5% in the second semester; 0.4% accumulated in the year and 1.6% accumulated in the last 12 months.

 

In the comparison June 06/June 05, real payroll increased 1.4%, with positive rates in 9 of the 14 areas surveyed. The main contribution came from Minas Gerais (9.2%), due, mainly, to basic metallurgy (17.8%), machines and electronic and communication equipment (24.99%), and machinery and equipment (18.2%). It is also worth mentioning São Paulo (1.3%), mainly due to the rises of chemical products (30.2%) and machines and electronic and communication equipment (18.8%) and the North and Central West regions (5.6%), with the contribution from machines and electronic and communication equipment (28.8%) and food products and beverages (6.5%).

 

In terms of negative contributions, Paraná (-3.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-6.3%) exerted the biggest pressures; the former, because of the fall of footwear and leather articles (-15.8%) and metal products (-9.1%0; the latter, because of food products and beverages (-10.1%) and wood (-11.5%).

 

Considering the subsectors, still referring to the same type of comparison, there was increase of the real payroll in 9 of the 18 segments. The major positive impacts came from chemical products (13.3%) and machines and electronic and communication equipment (16.3%). On the other hand, the main reductions were observed in machinery and equipment (-9.4%) and footwear and leather articles (-8.3%).

 

The rhythm of real payroll had slight increase from the first (0.4%) to the second (0.5%) quarter of 2006, both compared to the same period in 2005.

 

The indicator accumulated in the first semester increased by 0.4%, with increments in 8 of the 14 areas surveyed. The major positive contributions came from Minas Gerais (7.4%), especially due to the contribution from means of transportation (15.7%) and metallurgy (5.3%), and of the North and Central West regions (7.8%), due to food products and beverages (11.4%) and machines and electronic and communication equipment (22.4%). On the contrary, Rio Grande do Sul (-7.9%) and Paraná (-5.5%) had the biggest reductions, due to the contribution from footwear and leather articles (-22.2%) and food products and beverages (-9.6%).

 

In the total result for the country, there was increase of the payroll in 8 of the 18 subsectors. The most relevant positive contributions came from chemical products (12.0%) and machines and electronic and communication equipment (12.1%), whereas machinery and equipment (-10.5%) and footwear and leather articles (12.9%) were the main negative contributions.

The tables below show the quarterly indicators for employed persons, number of hours paid and real payroll, compared to the immediately previous quarter and with the same quarter of 2005.
