IPCA-15 changed by - 0.15% in July and IPCA-E closes the quarter at 0.29%

The Extended Consumer Price Index-15 (IPCA-15) changed by -0.15% in June. In May, there was a 0.27% hike. With the deflation occurred in the month, the index accumulated in the year was 1.70% and in the last 12 months, 4.03%. Considering the months of April, May and June, the IPCA-E was 0.29%.

 

The fall of fuel alcohol prices (12.87%) was the main cause of the decrease of the index, contributing 0.17 percentage points to the formation of the IPCA-15 this month. Some areas showed significant reductions, for example: Goiânia (-25.45%), São Paulo (-16.01%) and Curitiba (-15.13%). Gasoline, with -1.45%, also influenced the result. The most expressive ones were those of Goiânia (-6.66%) and Fortaleza (-5.42%).

 

In terms of food products, even with the rise chicken prices rising 9.71%, the ersult of the group was -0.40%. In May, there was relative stability (0.06%). The highlights were potatoes (-18.21%), tomatoes (-11.81%) and “carioca” beans (-9.42%).

 

Chicken represented the biggest positive contribution to the index (0.07). However, due to the crises faced by poultry sector in the previous period, the index accumulated in the year also had negative change of 15.83%.

 

The metropolitan area of Salvador (0.26%) had the highest index by area. Six of the areas surveyed had deflation this month. The most significant cases occurred in Goiânia (-0.78%) and Fortaleza (-0.68%).

For the calculation of the IPCA-15, prices collected in the period from May 16 to June 12 were compared to those charged from April 12 to May 15.  The IPCA-15 refers to families with monetary income ranging from 1 to 40 minimum salaries and includes the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. The same methodology is used to calculate both IPCA and IPCA-15. The difference between the two indexes lies in the period of data collection. The other index, IPCA-E, consists of IPCA-15 accumulated by quarter.
