IPCA changed by 0.43% in March

Gasoline caused the rise of IPCA, but chicken contributed to its fall

 The Extended National Consumer Price IndexIPCA of March changed by 0.43%, and was similar to the February rate (0.41%). As a consequence of this result, the IPCA of the first quarter of the year was 1.44%, less than in the same period last year (1.79%). The rate accumulated in the last twelve months was 5.32%, also below the 5.51% registerd in the imediately previous twelve months. In March 2005, the IPCA was 0.61%.

The major individual contribution to the monthly index (0.17 percentage points) affected gasoline prices, which changed from 2.78% due to the readjustment of alcohol and the change in its composition. The liter of fuel alcohol got 12.85% more expensive and this item contributed 0.12 percentage points to the monthly index. Although the rise of alcohol has been higher, its contribution was inferior to that of gasoline, due to small participation in the family expenses and, consequently, of in the calculation of the index.

Together, vehicle fuels rose by 4.97%, contributing 0.29 percentage points to the result of 0.43%. Consequently, fuels accounted for 67% of the index this month, and influenced the group transportation (1.13%), which presented a bigger change. In the year, the rate of fuels reached 9.21%, being 4.60% relative to the rise of gasoline, and of 27.54%, of alcohol.

The consumer is now also paying more for cooking gas, whose average change was 1.22%, due, mainly, to rises occurred in the metropolitan area of Recife (6.16%) and Salvador (2.35%).

Besides gas, the expenses with housing (0.58%) influenced the sewage and water bills (1.84%), with changes in Brasília (13.16%), Belo Horizonte (8.97%), Salvador (4.60%) and Porto Alegre (0.63%). As a consequence, non-food products went from 0.60% in February to 1.14% in March.

maintained a constant falling level: -0.28% in February and –0.24% in March. Chicken, influenced by the vast offer resulting from the current problems in the poultry sector, became 12.15% cheaper in relation to the previous month. It was the main individual negative contribution to IPCA: -0.10 percentage points. In relation to December last year, the kilogram of chicken fell by 19.98%.

  

Food prodcuts

maintained a constant falling level: -0.28% in February and –0.24% in March. Chicken, influenced by the vast offer resulting from the current problems in the poultry sector, became 12.15% cheaper in relation to the previous month. It was the main individual negative contribution to IPCA: -0.10 percentage points. In relation to December last year, the kilogram of chicken fell by 19.98%.

Among the products which presented rising prices, the main highlight was "carioca" beans, whose reduced offer caused the price to rise by 18.00%. Among the areas surveyed, the highest index was registered in Brasília (0.75%), with food products (0.48%) and sewage and water bills (13.16%) as the highlights. Rio de Janeiro (0.18%) had the lowest index.

In order to calculate the March index, the prices collected between February 25 and March 28 (reference) were compared to those in effect between January 28 and February 24 (base).

The IPCA has been calculated by IBGE since 1980. It refers to families with monetary income, from whatever source, ranging from 1 to 40 minimum salaries and encompasses nine metropolitan areas in the country, besides Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia.

 

INPC changed by 0.27% in March

The National Consumer Price Index – INPC changed by 0.27% in March, a result close to that registered in February (0.23%). With the contribution of the March index, the index accumulated in the first quarter of the year was 0.88%, much less than in the last year (1.75%). In the last twelve months, the rate was 4.15%, also below the result of the previously twelve months (4.63%). In March 2005, the index was 0.73%.

According to the montly index, food products presented negative change of 0.12%, whereas non-food products rose by 0.43%.

The highest index by area was calculated in Brasilia (1.03%), and the lowest in Rio de Janeiro (-0.08%).

In order to calculate this monthly index, prices collected between February 25 and March 28 (reference) were compared to those in effect between January 28 and February 24 (base).

The INPC has been calculated by IBGE since 1979. It refers to families whose monetary income, from any source, ranges from 1 to 8 minimum salaries with a salaried worker as head of the household. The index encompasses nine metropolitan areas in the country, besides Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia.
