Industrial employment fell by 0.6% in November 2005

In November 2005, industrial employment fell by 0.6% in comparison with October 2005 (seasonally adjusted series), the second consecutive negative result in this type of comparison. With this result, the quarterly moving average indicator decreased by 0.1% in the quarters ended in October and November. Fall (-0.9%) can also be observed in relation to November 2004. The indicators for longer periods increased: 1.2% accumulated in the year and 1.5% accumulated in the last 12 months.

In the comparison November 05/November 04, the group of salaried employed persons faced its third consecutive decrease (-0.9%), with negative rates in ten of the fourteen localities and in twelve of the eighteen activities surveyed. By subsector, the main negative contributions to the overall indicator came from footwear and leather articles (-12.8%) and wood (-16.0%). On the other hand, food products and beverages (5.45) represented the main positive contribution.

At regional level, still considering the comparison above, the main highlights in terms of negative contributions to the overall figures were Rio Grande do Sul (-8.5%), Paraná (-3.3%) and the Northeast region (-2.0%). In Rio Grande do Sul, there was decrease in thirteen activities, with footwear and leather articles (-19.5%) as the most relevant negative contribution; in Paraná, the most significant result among the ten falling activities came from wood (-23.0%).The reduction of industrial employment in the Northeast reflects, above all, the negative behavior observed in eleven subsectors, especially footwear and leather articles (-7.4%). Differently from the aforementioned states, Minas Gerais accounted for the major positive contribution, due, mainly, to the expansion of employment in the food and beverage industry.

The indicator accumulated in the year, over the same period in 2004, shows increase of the number of workers (1.2%). Among the ten subsectors which present positive results, the highlights are: food products and beverages (7.1%) and means of transportation (9.4%). Positive contributions came from footwear and leather articles (-11.6%), the main representative of this group. In the analysis by region, ten localities had expansion of industrial employment, especially São Paulo (2.5%), due, mainly, to the increase number of workers in the food products and beverages (11.9%) and means of transportation (10.2%) subsectors. It is also worth mentioning the index registered in Minas Gerais (3.9%), an influence of metal products (25.5%) and food products and beverages (5.9%). On the other hand, Ro Grande do Sul (-6.1%), affected by the reduction observed in footwear and leather articles (-19.9%), was the major negative contribution.

The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months maintains the deceleration trend, expressed by rates of 1.9% in October and 1.5% in November.

Number of hours paid increased by 0.4% in terms of the quarterly moving average

In November 2005, the indicator of the number of hours paid showed increase of 1.3% in relation to October, in the seasonally adjusted series. This expansion is confirmed by the quarterly moving average index, which showed gain of 0.4% in the quarters ended in November and October.

In comparison with the same month in the previous year, fall of 0.7% is observed. This is the third negative result in this type of comparison. The indicators for longer periods showed increase: 0.9% accumulated in the year and 1.2% accumulated in the last twelve months. The indicators of the average number of working-hours also showed distinct behavior: rise of the monthly index (0.3%) and fall of the index accumulated in the year (-0.3%) and in the last twelve months (-0.2%).

The number of hours paid in industry, according to the comparison November 05/November 04, was reduced by 0.7% as a consequence of the negative performance of ten among fourteen localities and of twelve of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. By subsector, the major decreases came from footwear and leather articles (-12.9%), wood (-15.75%) and apparel (-4.9%). On the other hand, food products and beverages (6.5%) and means of transportation (5.4%) were the main positive impacts.

Still concerning the monthly indicator, the localities accounting for the main falls were Rio Grande do Sul (-8.2%), Northeast region (-3.2%) and Paraná (-4.5%). In the Rio Grande do Sul industry, most (fourteen) of the eighteen subsectors had negative performances, being the main impacts footwear and leather articles (-18.8%), machinery and equipment (-12.6%) and other products from the manufacturing industry (-12.5%). In the Northeast region, thirteen of the eighteen activities had negative performances, being the main contributors, in this case, footwear and leather articles (-9.2%), food products and beverages (-3.1%) and apparel (-5.0%). In Paraná, wood (-24%) and other products from the manufacturing industry (-17.2%) were the highlights among the eleven falling activities. Among the localities which had positive results, Minas Gerais (5.5%) and São Paulo (1.2%) were the highlights. In Minas Gerais, food products and beverages (15.0%) and metal products (17.4%) represented the main negative contributions among the eleven activities accounting for the increase of the number of hours paid. In the São Paulo industry, food products and beverages (12.3%) and means of transportation (5.7%) were the main positive impacts on the overall index.

The indicator accumulated in the year, in comparison with the same period in 2004, showed expansion of 0.9% in the number of hours paid to industrial workers, with positive results in nine localities and in eight subsectors surveyed. In the analysis by region, the major positive influences came from São Paulo (2.3%), Minas Gerais (4.9%) and from the Northeast and Central West regions (3.2%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul, with decrease of 7.0%, and Rio de Janeiro (-1.9%) were the most relevant negative contributions. By subsector, the main contributions to the national result came from food products and beverages (7.3%), means of transportation (9.3) and metal products (6.0%). On the contrary, footwear and leather articles (-12.0%) and wood (-9.0%) were the main negative contributions.

The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, although having positive results, maintains the deceleration trend, with figures changing from 1.7% in October, to 1.2% in November.

 

Payroll fell by 0.8% in November

In November 2005, the real payroll of industrial workers, in the seasonally adjusted series, fell by 0.8% in relation to October.This result was a little more positive than that registered from September to October (-1.6%). It is worth pointing out that this is the third negative result in this type of comparsion, with decrease of the accumulated in 3.7% in this period (November 05/August 05). Nevertheless, in terms of the other indicators, the results remain positive: 2.2% in relation to November 2004; 3.7% accumulated in the year and 4.4% accumulated in the last twelve months.

The real loss in the payroll between October and November was confirmed by the quarterly moving average, which shows loss of 1.3% in the quarters ended in October and November.

The monthly indicator shows that the real average payroll grew by 2.2%, with positive rates in ten of the fourteen localities surveyed. The main positive influence came from São Paulo (1.8%) due, mainly, to the salary gains observed in the subsector food products and beverages (26.1%). It is also worth mentioning Minas Gerais (5.4%), due to the influence of metallurgy (11.9%), chemical products (16.0%) and metal products (13.1%), and Rio de Janeiro (5.8%), due to the influence of the subsectors food products and beverages (29.9%), extraction industry (10.4%) and machinery and equipment (18.1%). Among the places which faced decrease, the main negative contribution came from Rio Grande do Sul (-2.0%), because of the subsector footwear and leather articles (-16.7%). In this comparison, by subsector, there was real gain in the payroll of ten among eighteen industrial subsectors investigated. The major positive contributions came from food products and beverages (13.6%), chemical products (3.7%) and metallurgy (5.7%). The main negative pressures came from rubber and plastic (-6.4%), footwear and leather articles (-11.3%) and wood (-10.8%).

The indicator accumulated in the year, in comparison with the same period in 2004, increased by 3.7% considering the real payroll, with gains in twelve of the fourteen localities surveyed. The main positive influences came from São Paulo (3.3%) and Minas Gerais (10.2%), especially from the subsectors food products and beverages (18%), means of transportation (7.0%) and machinery and equipment (6.8%), in the São Paulo industry; from metal products (49.1%), metallurgy (11.8%) and means of transportation (11.7%) in Minas Gerais. On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%) and Pernambuco (-0.2%) were the only states to register salary losses. The subsectors accounting for these results were footwear and leather articles and food products and beverages (-5.0%). Still considering the same type of comparison, by subsector, there was not increase of salaries in thirteen of the eighteen activities investigated. The most relevant contributions to the overall rate came from food products and beverages (10.6%), means of transportation (7.6%) and machinery and equipment (6.8%), whereas paper and printing (-5.4%), footwear and leather articles (-9.0%) and non-metallic minerals (-5.4%) were the main negative contributions.

In the analysis of the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, the real payroll maintains its positive rate (4.4%), although there has been clear deceleration in the rhythm of growth in the last few months: 6.0% until August, 5.6% until September and 4.9% until October.
