Industrial production falls in 8 among 14 regions

In October, the regional indexes of industrial activity had for the second consecutive month, in relation to October 2004, a scenario of negative results in eight among 14 surveyed localities. The industry of Amazonas (12.1%) had the most elevated rate, followed by Pará (6.4%), Minas Gerais (5.2%), Espírito Santo (3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (2.6%) and São Paulo (0.9%), which also grew above the overall average (0.4%). The other localities had negative rates: Bahia (-0.3%), Pernambuco (-1.3%), Goiás (-3.5%), Northeast Region (-4.0%), Santa Catarina (-5.0%), Paraná (-6.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (-6.6%) and Ceará (-12.1%).

In the accumulated indicator in the year, almost all the localities registered growth, with the exception of Ceará (-0.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-3.8%). Among the 12 localities that grew, Amazonas, with 15.6%, registered the only two-digit rate, sustained, mainly, by the increase in the industrial production of electronic and communication material (mobile telephones and electrical and electronic equipment). Minas Gerais (6.7%), São Paulo and Pará (both with 4.1%) and Goiás (4.0%) also increased above the national average (3.8%). The other localities had the following results: Bahia (3.5%), Northeast Region (2.3%), Paraná (2.3%), Espírito Santo (1.9%), Rio de Janeiro (1.7%), Pernambuco (1.2%) and Santa Catarina (0.7%).

In the regional evolution of the accumulated indicator in the last twelve months, all the localities portrayed a positive behavior, except Rio Grande do Sul (-2.8%). Nevertheless, it could be observed a predominance of the reduction in the rhythm of expansion between September and October. São Paulo (5.2%), industry with major importance, fell compared to September (5.6%). However, the trend of deceleration more pronounced occurred in Ceará, which passed from 5.1% in September to 2.7% in October, followed by Paraná (from 5.5% to 4.3%), Santa Catarina (from 3.7% to 2.7%) and Northeast Region (from 5.1% to 4.1%). Amazonas, which passed from 14.9% to 15.4%, and Rio de Janeiro (from 1.9% to 2.1%) were the only localities which had a slight increase between September and October in this type of comparison.

Amazonas

The industrial production of Amazonas had expansion of 12.1% in October, in comparison with the same month of the previous year, being this the fifteenth consecutive positive result in this type of comparison. The indicators for larger periods also showed significant rates of growth: 15.6% in the accumulated index of the year and 15.4% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

In the monthly indicator, there was growth in seven among 11 surveyed activities. The sectors which most stood out in the composition of the overall index were: electronic material and communication equipment (14.2%) and food products and beverages (25.0%). On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (-7.8%) and rubber and plastic (-13.1%).

The increment of 15.6% in the accumulated index from January to October occurred, mainly due to the positive performance of eight among 11 surveyed groups. The main positive influence for the formation of the overall index came from electronic material and communication equipment (31.0%). Also stood out food products and beverages (11.0%) and other transportation equipment (9.1%).

 

Pará

In October, Pará increased in 6.4% the industrial production in comparison with the same month of the previous year. The indicators for larger periods also recorded increases: 4.1% in the accumulated index of the year and 5.5% in the accumulated indicator of the last twelve months.

In the monthly indicator, the performance of mining and quarrying (17.5%) was the main responsible for the expansion of the general industry of Pará. This segment, which answers for approximately 40.0% of the industrial structure of the state, indicated increase in extraction, mainly, iron ore. The other positive contribution came from basic metal products (2.2%). On the other hand, the major negative influences in the overall result came from wood (-11.8%) and non-metallic minerals (-5.6%).

In the growth of 4.1% in the accumulated January-October, compared to the similar period of the previous year, the favorable behavior of mining and quarrying (10.7%) was also the main influence. It can be pointed out the positive result of basic metal products (3.2%). On the other hand, the major negative impacts came from wood (-6.4%) and non-metallic minerals (-8.6%).

Northeast

In October, the industry of the Northeast fell by 4.0% in the comparison with the same month of the previous year. Regarding the indicators for larger periods, it grew by 2.3% in the accumulated in the year and by 4.1% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

According to the monthly indicator, there was decrease in seven among 11 surveyed sectors. The major negative impacts in the overall result came from food products and beverages (-5.8%), chemical products (-7.2%) and textiles (-15.5%). On the other hand, stood out, among the main positive results, electrical machines, equipment and materials (34.6%) and basic metal products (8.7%).

In the accumulated indicator January -October, compared to the same period of the previous year, the growth of 2.3% showed mainly the positive behavior of six among 11 surveyed activities. The main highlights came from non-metallic minerals (15.4%), food products and beverages (3.1%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (5.3%). On the other hand, the major negative results in the overall result came from mining and quarrying (-3.8%) and textiles (-2.5%).

Ceará

The industrial production of Ceará fell, in October, by 12.1% in comparison with the same month of the previous year. The accumulated indicator in the year also fell (-0.6%), while the accumulated indicator in the last twelve months continued positive (2.7%).

For the fourth consecutive month, the industry of Ceará decreased in the monthly indicator, falling in six among 10 surveyed activities. The main negative contribution for the formation of the rate of –12.1% came from textiles (-23.1%). It is worth mentioning still the loss of dynamism of food products and beverages (-15,4%) and food products and leather articles (-20.6%). On the other hand, petroleum refining and alcohol production (34.3%) and chemical products (17.5%) brought the main positive results.

In the accumulated indicator in the year, four among 10 investigated sectors had negative rates. The main influences came from food products and beverages (-3.9%) and footwear and leather articles (-5.9%). On the other hand, the best performances were observed in non-metallic minerals (25.8%) and electric machines, equipment and materials (31.6%).

Pernambuco

In October, the industry of Pernambuco fell by 1.3% in relation to the same month of the previous year. However, the indicators for larger periods continued positive: 1.2% in the accumulated indicator of the year and 1.1% in the accumulated indicator of the last twelve months.

The industry of Pernambuco fell, for the second consecutive month, in the monthly indicator, with drop in six among 11 surveyed industrial activities. The main negative contribution for the formation of the rate of –1.3% came from food products and beverages (-3.2%). It can also be mentioned, the fall observed in petroleum refining and alcohol (-22.5%). Positively, stood out electric machines, equipment and materials (26.9%) and rubber and plastic (23.7%).

In the accumulated indicator of the year, six among 11 industrial sectors grew. The main positive impacts came from electric machines, equipment and materials (19.5%) and chemical products (7.5%). On the other hand, the major negative results came from metal products (-13.5%) and textiles (-21.0%).

Bahia

The industrial production of Bahia recorded, in October, fall of 0.3% in relation to the same month of the previous year. Nonetheless, the indicators for larger periods continued positive: 3.5% in the accumulated indicator of the year and 5.9% in the accumulated indicator of the last twelve months.

In the monthly indicator, the industry of Bahia, interrupting a sequence of three positive results, fell by 0.3%, although with only two among nine industrial sectors with negative rates. In the formation of this index, the highlight was chemical products (-9.3%), activity of major participation in the industry of Bahia. It is worth mentioning mining and quarrying (-5.4%). On the other hand, the main positive contributions came from basic metal products (16.8%) and cellulose and paper (14.5%).

In the accumulated indicator of the year, compared to a similar period of the previous year, the industry of Bahia increased by 3.5%, with increase in six among nine surveyed activities. The major positive influences came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (5.8%) and food products and beverages (8.3%). On the other hand, the main falls were observed in mining and quarrying (-3.6%) and basic metal products (-1.5%).

Minas Gerais

The industrial production of Minas Gerais grew by 5.2%, in October of the current year, in the comparison with the same month of the previous year, being this the twenty-seventh positive consecutive result in this type of comparison. In the accumulated indicator from January to October, an increase of 6.7% was observed and in the accumulated indicator of the last twelve months the increase was of 6.4%.

The monthly indicator increased by 5.2% due mainly, to the behavior of mining and quarrying (11.2%). Also, expansion was observed in manufacturing (4,3%), supported, mainly, in the growth of nine among 12 surveyed activities. The main highlights by sector were food products (10.0%) and automotive vehicles (9.9%). Among the negative results, the major impact came from other chemical products (-8.4%).

The industrial production of the state grew in the year by 6.7%, supported in the expansion of mining and quarrying (13.1%), as well as manufacturing (5.7%). The first one stood out with the major positive impact, mainly due to the growth of iron ore. The second one showed, mainly, the expansion in 10 among 12 surveyed groups, where stood out positively automotive vehicles (12.1%), metal products (33.7%) and food products (7.5%). The main negative impact came from basic metal products (-3.5%).

Espírito Santo

In October, the main industrial indicators of Espírito Santo were positive. In relation to October of the previous year, the production increased by 3.6%, in the accumulated in the year by 1.9% and in the accumulated in the last twelve months by 3.1%.

In the comparison with October 2004, the rate of 3.6% was a consequence of the favorable performance observed in three among five surveyed industrial segments. The main positive contribution came from cellulose and paper (13.8%), followed by positive performances that came from basic metal products (3.3%) and non-metallic minerals (7.6%). On the other hand, food products and beverages (-4.2%) indicated the main negative impact on the formation of the overall rate.

In the accumulated production in the period January-October, compared to a similar period of the previous year, four among five surveyed segments registered positive rates. The group of cellulose and paper (3.9%), of great participation in the local industry, was the main positive impact in the overall average. Mining and quarrying, with expansion of 2.1%, indicated the second major positive contribution. On the other hand, basic metal products (-1.5%) was the only one to present a negative result.

Rio de Janeiro

The industrial production of Rio de Janeiro showed in October, increase of 2.6% compared to same month of the previous year, maintaining a sequence of three positive results in this type of comparison. The indicators accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months also recorded growth in the rhythm of productive activity: 1.7% and 2,1%, respectively.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the main contribution came from mining and quarrying (15.5%), once manufacturing had null growth (0.0%). Mining and quarrying remained indicating positive results stimulated, mainly, by the good performance of petroleum extraction and natural gas. In the industry of manufacturing, the major positive influences came from automotive vehicles (21.4%) and food products (16.1%). On the other hand, rubber and plastic, with fall of 29.7%, and pharmaceuticals (-10.0%) answered for the main negative impacts.

The accumulated production in the period January-October 2005, compared to the same period of the previous year, had as the main positive contribution in the overall index the favorable performance of mining and quarrying. Regarding manufacturing, which fell by 0.9%, continued standing out positively non-metallic minerals (24.4%) and automotive vehicles (16.6%). On the other hand, basic metal products (-7.8%) and rubber and plastic (-24.6%) were the groups of manufacturing industry which most influenced negatively.

São Paulo

In October, the industry of São Paulo increased by 0.9% in relation to the same month of the previous year. The accumulated indicator in the year had expansion of 4.1% and the accumulated in the last twelve months 5.2%.

In the monthly indicator, the production increased again after the decrease of 1.4% in September. Nine among 20 segments had positive rates, especially, in terms of participation, pharmaceuticals (24.6%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (8.6%) and edition and printing (9.5%). On the other hand, automotive vehicles (-8.8%) and machines and equipment (-4.5%) brought the main negative influences.

In the accumulated indicator in the ten first months of the year, 14 sectors increased in relation to the same period of 2004. Pharmaceuticals (24.3%), edition and printing (19.1%) and electrical machines, equipment and materials (16.3%) represented the main positive contributions in the overall result. On the other hand, came from electronic material and communication equipment (-6.5%) the major negative impact.

Paraná

In October, the industrial production of Paraná fell by 6.2%, the fourth consecutive negative result in this type of comparison. Considering the accumulated indicators of the year and last twelve months, they indicated positive rates: 2.3% and 4.3%, respectively.

In the monthly indicator, there was fall in eight investigated segments and expansion in six. Among the ones that fell, stood out food products (-15.1%), edition and printing (-30.8%), machines and equipment (-24.1%) and wood (-25.2%). On the other hand, the most significant positive impacts came from automotive vehicles (28.5%) and electric machines, equipment and materials (45.6%).

In the accumulated indicator in the year, compared to the same period of 2004, it can be observed expansion in seven among 14 industrial groups. Among the industrial sectors that had positive results, automotive vehicles (27.0%) had the major positive impact upon the overall average. It is worth mentioning the positive impact of petroleum refining and alcohol production (13.7%). On the other hand, food products (-5.3%), chemical products (-19.9%), wood (-11.9%) and machines and equipment (-8.5%) represented the main negative results.

Santa Catarina

The industrial production of Santa Catarina, in October, fell by 5.0% compared to the same period of the previous year, keeping a sequence of four negative results. However, in the indicators for larger periods, the industry of the state continued with positive although decreasing rates: 0.7% in the accumulated of the year and 2.7% in the last twelve months.

In the comparison with October of the previous year, the fall of 5.0% was a consequence mainly of the adverse performance observed in seven among 11 investigated groups. The main negative contributions came from machines and equipment, with fall of 18.0%, and apparel (-19.7%). It is worth mentioning also the fall of electrical machines, equipment and materials (-21.7%). On the other hand, automotive vehicles (22.2%) stood out as the main positive result in the formation of the overall average.

Still with the accumulated production in the year expanding only 0.7%, the industry of the state still had a generalized profile of positive results, which reached eight among 11 industrial surveyed activities. The most important positive contribution came from automotive vehicles (47.9%) which continued as the sector with best performance in the industry of the state. Also, it may be mentioned the good performance of food products (3.3%), textiles (5.4%) and cellulose and paper (7.0%). On the other hand, only machines and equipment (-12.5%), apparel (-12.5%) and electric machines, equipment and materials (-15.1%) brought negative influences.

Rio Grande do Sul

The industry of Rio Grande do Sul, in October, fell by 6.6%, compared to the same month of the previous year. The indicators for larger periods also decreased: - 3.8% in the accumulated in the year and –2.8% in the accumulated of the last twelve months.

In the monthly indicator, the fall of 6.6% in the industry of the state showed, mainly, the negative performance in eight among 14 surveyed groups, coming from footwear and leather articles (-20.2%), machines and equipment (-19.5%) and furniture (-15.2%) the main negative impacts. On the other hand, the main positive influences in the overall result came from food products (5.2%) and automotive vehicles (1.9%).

The fall of 3.8% in the accumulated indicator in the year resulted, mainly, from the decreases observed in the majority (11) of the 14 investigated segments. The main negative highlights came from machines and equipment (-19.2%), other chemical products (-5.2%) and footwear and leather articles (-3.1%). On the other hand, the main positive impacts came from food products (2.9%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (3.0%).

Goiás

In October, the industrial production of Goiás fell by 3.5%, in the comparison with the same period of the previous year. In the indicators for larger periods, it could be observed growth in the accumulated index of the year (4.0%), as well as in the accumulated index of the last twelve months (6.3%).

In the comparison with October of the previous year, the industry of the state had the second consecutive negative result. Among the groups that fell, mining and quarrying (-30.6%) brought the main negative influence upon the overall average. In the manufacturing industry, which fell by 1.2%, two among four segments decreased the production, especially chemical products (-22.0%). On the other hand, food products and beverages (2.7%) was the one which most influenced positively.

The accumulated production in the period January to October increased by 4.0%, with four industrial activities presenting positive rates. Food products and beverages (6.4%) brought the main positive impact. It may also be pointed out the favorable result of basic metal products (14.6%). On the other hand, the industry of chemical products (-11.0%) was the only one to contribute negatively.
