The total production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds must reach 112.936 million tons, a result 5.39% below the one obtained in 2004 (119.370 million tons).

The total production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds must reach 112.936 million tons, a result 5.39% below the one obtained in 2004 (119.370 million tons). This is the estimate for September of the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), released by IBGE. In relation to the estimate of August (113.131 million tons), a reduction of 0.17% was observed. Since the harvest of the majority of the products has ended, for the following forecasts there will be only winter products left. Among these, the most important one is wheat, due to its economic significance, more than barley, rye, oats and triticale.

September in relation to August/ 2005

In the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production of September in relation to August, stood out the changes in the estimates of production of four products: seed cotton (herbaceous) (-1.40%), beans in grain 2nd harvest (-1.87%), beans in grain 3rd harvest (2.22%) and wheat in grain (-2.00%). The changes aforementioned, with the exception of wheat, are a consequence of the latest estimates, once the harvest of these products has already been concluded.

Considering wheat, which presented a decline of 2.00% in relation to the national figure of August, the major change was observed in the state of Paraná, where changes of –4.7% in the expected production (2.870 million tons) and –3.00% in the productivity (2,260 kg/ha) were recorded. Rainfall in excess in this period is damaging the quality of the harvested grain as well as productivity

Estimates of the harvest 2005 in relation to the harvest 2004

Among the analyzed products, presented positive change in the estimate of production in relation to the previous year: beans in grain 2nd harvest (7.55%), beans in grain 3rd harvest (13.16%), castor beans (37.57%) and soybeans (3.17%). The change was negative in the cases of seed cotton (herbaceous) (-3.11%), rice in husk (-0.18%), beans in grain 1st harvest (-2.62%), corn in grain 1st harvest (-12.96%), corn in grain 2nd harvest (-28.44%), sorghum in grain (-27.66%) and wheat in grain (-11.00%).

The national production of wheat for this year is 5.096 million tons, lower 11.00% than the one obtained in the harvest 2004 (5.726 million tons). In a planted area of 2.367 million hectares, a productivity index of 2,153 kg/ha is expected; it is a value 5.02% higher than the one obtained in 2004.

In Paraná, the production of wheat estimated for 2005 was 2.870 million tons, 3.56% lower than the one obtained in 2004. The harvest is ongoing, and it is more advanced in the North and West regions of the state. Due to the heavy rainfall, the product now obtained does not present good quality. In Rio Grande do Sul, for harvest 2005 a production of 1.648 million tons is expected, 20% lower than the one obtained in same harvest of the previous year, when a volume of 2.062 million tons was obtained.

Regarding the production of grains in the Major Regions of the country for 2005, it is distributed as follows: North, 4.071 million tons (14.48%), Northeast, 10.013 million tons (7.12%), Southeast, 17.582 million tons (-0.34%), South, 39.003 million tons (-20.14%) and Central West, 42.266 million tons (5.71%).
