The National Index of Construction was 0.14% in September

The National Index of Construction, calculated by IBGE in partnership with CAIXA ECONÔMICA FEDERAL, was 0.14% in September, a reduction of 0.20 percentage points in relation to August (0.34%). This was the lowest result since January 1999 (0.04%), when the present series started. The index accumulated in the year was 5.92% and in the last twelve months, 9.01%.
The national cost by square meter was R$ 537.74, of which R$ 314.29 were relative to material and R$ 223.45 to manpower.
In relation to September 2004 (0.69%), the index decreased by 0.55 percentage points. The accumulated indexes were also lower than the ones measured in the equivalent period last year (7.80% and 10.06%).
Construction material changed by 0.24%, 0.26 percentage points below the rate of August (0.50%). Manpower remained practically stable, with change of 0.01% only. There was monthly decrease of 0.10 percentage points, once in August the rate was 0.11%.
Regarding the index accumulated in the year, construction material increased by 5.37%, a figure much lower than that of the same period in 2004 (9.58%). As for manpower, the increase was 6.69% versus 5.43% in 2004.
In the last twelve months, the following changes were observed: 9.56% (material) and 8.24% (manpower).
Northeast and North regions were the highlights in September
The Northeast (0.20%) and North regions (0.19%) presented results above those of the other regions: Central-West (0.16%); Southeast (0.12%) and South (0.09%).
The rates accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months were registered in the North region (7.29% and 10.21% respectively). The lowest results in this period occurred in the Central-West region (5.54% e 7.43%).
The costs by region were: R$ 576.68 (Southeast); R$ 543.92 (Sul); R$ 515.85 (North); R$ 514.60 (Central-West) and R$ 490.73 (Northeast).
Several states were close to stability
Especially due to the lack of salary readjustments in September, construction indexes were below the national average in 13 of the 27 geographic units surveyed (0.14%),. The lowest figure was registered in Rio de Janeiro (0.01%). Other 4 states had similar results: Bahia and Santa Catarina (0.15%), Ceará (0.16%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (0.17%).
The highest differences were observed in Rio Grande do Norte (0.47%), Piauí (0.42%) and Espírito Santo (0.40%).
