IBGE Municipal Survey Receives United Nations Award

MUNIC – the Survey of Basic Municipal Information of IBGE, has received the 2005 Habitat Scroll of Honor Award, from United Nations Human Settlements Program.
MUNIC – the Survey of Basic Municipal Information of IBGE, has received the 2005 Habitat Scroll of Honor Award, from the United Nations Human Settlements Program. The award ceremony will take place today, October 03, in Jacarta, Indonesia.
Having existed since 1986 by UN Habitat – The United Nations Program for Urban Settlements, the Habitat Scroll of Honor Award is granted, annually, to institutions and personalities whose activities are related to human shelter and quality of life. The table below shows the themes and places of the previous ceremonies. It is the first time that an official institute of statistics is granted the award, and IBGE is the fifth Brazilian institution receiving it (the full list can be seen on http://www.un-habitat.org/whd/2005/previous_winners.asp)
In 2005, the award ceremony takes place today, October 03, World Habitat Day,
in Jacarta, Indonesia. The city, which has also received the Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for the modernization of its infrastructure, was chosen by the United Nations in honor of the tsunami victims, since this tragedy devastated a number of coastal villages along the Pacific Ocean.
The Millennium Development Goals and the City is the theme of the award ceremony this year. The award recipients, besides IBGE’s MUNIC are: Rose Molokane, South-African defender of the right to housing and against racism; the city government of Yantai (China) and Kazan (Russia), for their housing policies for the poor population; Sarvodaya Shramandana, a non-governmental organization from Sri Lanka, for its aid to tsunami victims; professor Johan Silas, for the development of construction techniques which make it possible to build high-quality popular houses in less than ten hours.
Post –mortem homage will be paid to Tengku Rizal Nurdin, governor of the province located in the northern part of Sumatra, for his tireless work in favor of earthquake and tsunami victims, once both disasters affected the region.
IBGE was informed of the award on September 06, when the Directory of Surveys of IBGE received an official letter from the United Nations, signed by the coordinator of the World Habitat Day, Francisco Vasquez, which read:
"I have the great pleasure to announce that, as decided by the United Nation Program for Human Settlements – UN – Habitat, the Survey of Basic Municipal Information was granted the 2005 Habitat Scroll of Honor Award.
The award is due to the way the survey has monitored the evolution of The Millennium Development Goals in Brazilian cities, providing the government, municipalities and the public in general with relevant information on finance, administrative structure, and other aspects of urban management.When evaluating the several nominees to the prize, the committee took into consideration how municipalities, citizens and organizations succeeded in involving the local communities in the preservation of the environment and in the improvement of their life conditions.The sustainability of the program and the diffusion of its methodological innovations among as many people as possible, were also considered. It is our unanimous decision that MUNIC is entitled to the award this year."
The Survey of Survey of Basic Information of IBGE (MUNIC), has been conducted since 1999. Through questionnaires distributed to all city governments in Brazil, the administrative organization, finance and environmental management of municipalities are investigated. Its latest edition will be released in December, bringing information about the public administration of the 5.560 municipalities existing in Brazil in 2004.
