Industrial employment remains stable in July

In July 2005, the industrial employment indicator had no change in relation to the previous month (0.0%), for the seasonally adjusted series. In comparison with the same month last year, the index grew by 1.1% and its accumulated rate in the year was 2.1%. The accumulated rate in the last 12 months decreased slightly between June (2.9%) and July (2.8%).

The stability of the level of employment between June and July, after the reduction of 0.6% observed in June/ May, caused the quarterly moving average index to follow a descending trend. According to the graph below, there was fall by 0.2% in the quarters ended in June and in July.

In comparison with July, the employment rate grew in 9 of the 14 areas surveyed

In comparison with July 2004, hirings once more outnumbered dismissals in the industrial sector; the increase was 1.1%. Nine of the fourteen areas surveyed contributed positively to the overall result and the highlights in this case were São Paulo (3.2%) and Minas Gerais (3.6%). In both states, food products and beverages and metal products were the main contributors to local results. Seven segments of the São Paulo industry and other ten from Minas Gerais presented positive rates. Concerning the areas where industrial employment was reduced, the main negative contributions came from Rio Grande do Sul (-7./0%) and Santa Catarina (-0.8%). Footwear and leather articles (-20.8%) in Rio Grande do Sul and wood (-12.3%), in Santa Catarina, were the main responsible subsectors for the reduction of the number of workers in these states.

At national level, the main positive impacts on the number of employed persons were, with reference to July 2004, food products and beverages (8.9%), means of transportation (8.0%) and metal products (9.9%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-14.0%) and wood (-12.1%) were the most significant negative contributions.

Food products and beverages and means of transportation are the leaders in terms of the rate accumulated in the year

The industrial employment rate accumulated in the year grew by 2.1%. It is a consequence, mainly, of the results of 12 of the 14 localities and 10 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. At national level, the main highlights were, in terms of participation, food prodcust and beverages (7.3%), means of transportation (11.5%) and machinery and equipemnt (3.7%). At regional level, São Paulo (3.0%) and Minas Gerais (4.4%) accounted for the main positive contributions. In the São Paulo industrial park, the principal contributions came from food products and beverages and means of transportation, both with 12.1%. In Minas Gerais, the most important subsectors were metal products (31.7%) and means of transportation (11.3%).

Still in this comparison, there are results from Rio Grande do Sul (-4.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.1%), among the localities, and footwear and leather articles (-9.7%) and apparel (-3.5%), among trhe subsectors, as the most significant contributors to the negative results.

Number of hours paid falls by 1.2% and the average number of working hours presents negative results

In July, the number of hours paid to industry workers, considering the seasonally adjusted series, fell by 1.2% in relation to June. The comparison with the same month last year showed an increase by 0.9%. The indicators accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months also increased, by 1.6% and 2.6%, respectively. The average number of working hours had negative results in all the comparisons: -0.2% in terms of the monthly indicator, -0.5% accumulated in the year and –0.3% accumulated in the last twelve months.

After two months characterized by fall of the month/immediately previous month indicator, the quarterly moving average decreased by 0.4% in the quarters ended in June and in July, interrupting the recent series of positive results.


As for the indicator July 05/ July 04, the number of hous paid grew by 0.9%, reflecting, above all, the positive peformances of 8 of the 14 areas and of 8 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The main highlights were food products and beverages (9.3%), metal products (11.4%) and means of transportation (8.3%). On the other hand, the main negative results came from footwear and leather articles (-14.1%) and wood (-12.0%).

Still considering the monthly comparison, the localities which most positively contributed to the overall rate were São Paulo (2.9%), Minas Gerais (4.6%) and the North and Central-West regions (2.8%). In the São Paulo industry, the number of hours paid increased in 9 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, and the highlights were food products and beverages (13.0%), metal products (16.6%) and means of transporation (9.8%). In Minas Gerais, metal products (41.7%) and food products and beverages (6.8%) were the highlights among the 12 subsectors presenting positive results. Food products and beverages (14.6%) was the main contributor to the results of the North and Central-West regions. The fall in Rio Grande do Sul, on the other hand, (-7.1%), caused the major negative influence on the overall index, especially due to the fall of the subsector footwear and leather articles (-21.0%).

Concerning the rate accumulated between January and July, the increase by 1.6% can be attributed,  mainly, to the results of 10 of the 14 localities and 8 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. The major positive impacts came from São Paulo (2.3%), Minas Gerais (5.0%) and North and Central-West regions (4.2%). On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-5.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.0%) were responsible for the main falls. In terms of subsector, the most relevant positive impacts were observed in the industry of food products and beverages (7.6%), means of transportaion (10.7%) and metal products (6.5%), and the negative ones, in footwear and leather articles (-10.4%) and wood (-5.6%).

Real payroll decreases in relation to June

In July, the real payroll of the Brazilian industry presented a negative change of 0.1% in comparison with the immediately previous month, considering the seasonally adjusted series. This factor contributed to the slight decrease of the quarterly moving average, once, among the quarters ended in June and in July, it fell by 0.2%.

The remaining real payroll indicators kept on presenting positive rates in their main comparisons. In relation to July 2004, the increase was 3.1%; 3.9% was accumulated in the first seven months of the year and 6.4%, in the last twelve months. As for the average real payroll, the results were also positive in the three types of comparison: 2.0% for the monthly indicator, 1.7% accumulated in the year and 3.4% accumulated in the last twelve months.

In comparison with the same period last month, the real payroll increased in 11 of the 14 localities surveyed. The major positive contribution was observed in São Paulo (4.6%), due to the increase, above all, of the subsectors means of transportation (8.7%) and food products and beverages (14.8%). Among the localities which had negative rates, the major negative contributions came from Rio de Janeiro (-10.0%), due, mainly, to the growth of quarrying industry (-57.7%), a consequence of an unusual comparison base resulting from the shared profit of an important company of this segment in July 2004. At sectorial level, the increase of the monthly indicator can be explained, mainly, by the expansion observed in most of (12) the subsectors surveyed. The major positive contributors were food products and beverages (11.1%) and means of transportation (9.0%). On the other hand, quarrying industry (-19.5%) repesented the major negative contribution.

The rate accumulated in the first seven months of 2005 grew by 3.9% in terms of real payroll. This result reflected the growth of 12 of the 18 industrial subsectors surveyed. Means of transportation (10.8%), food products and beverages (9.3%) and machinery and equipment (8.0%) were the most relevant positive contributions. The highlights, in terms of negative influence, were paper and graphic industry (-7.4%) and non-metallic minerals (-5.9%). At regional level, São Paulo (3.5%) and Minas Gerais (10.0%) accounted for the principal positive impacts on the overall rate, a consequence, principally, of the expansion of the subsectors means of transportation (11.3%), food products and beverages (17.7%) and metallic products (68.0%). Only two localities presented reduction in this comparison: Pernambuco (-1.5%), due to the performance of food products and beverages (-7.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.3%), of footwear and leather articles (-13.8%).

Concerning the averge real payroll of industry, the accumulated indicator in the year, with expansion by 1.7%, showed progress in 9 of the 14 localities and in 10 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. At regional level, in terms of rate, the highlights were Rio de Janeiro (7.2%), Minas Gerais (5.4%) and Espírito Santo (5.1%). In terms os subsectors, the most significant figures were those of apparel (4.8%), quarrying industry (4.4%) and machinery and equipment (4.2%).

In summary, for the comparisons with 2004, the figures for industrial employmenst and number of hours paid were positive. Nevertheless, the quarterly moving average decreased by 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively, in the quarters ended in June and in July. This change may be related to the stability of this indicator in July.
