Industrial regional production decelerates in July, but still registers expansion in relation to 2004

In the comparison July 2005/ July 2004, 7 among 14 surveyed regions presented growth in the production, while in the comparison June 2005/ June 2004, 9 localities presented positive rates. Besides the influence of a lower number of working days in July/2005, the deceleration is a consequence of the fact that from the beginning of the second semester of 2004, the industrial production stressed its ascending trend.

Amazonas still leads the regional growth (11.7%), followed by Bahia (8.3%), Goiás (6.7%), Minas Gerais (6.0%), Northeast Region (1.6%), Pernambuco (1.6%) and São Paulo (1.0%). Negative results were observed in Pará (-0.9%), Paraná (-1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.6%), Ceará (-6.3%), Espírito Santo (-7.2%), Santa Catarina (-7.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-8.7%).

In the accumulated index January-July, the positive rates reached all the localities, except Rio Grande do Sul (-4.0%). With similar growth or above the national average in this period (4.3%) are Amazonas (19.0%), Minas Gerais (7.5%), Goiás (6.9%), Paraná (6.6%), São Paulo (5.5%) and Pará (4.3%). Also present positive results Santa Catarina (4.2%), Northeast Region (4.1%), Ceará (4.0%), Bahia (3.2%), Pernambuco (1.8%), Espírito Santo (1.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.9%).

According to the table below, we observe than in a general way, in relation to 2004, the industrial production registered in July a lower rhythm of growth than in the first semester of 2005.

Amazonas

In July, the industrial activity of Amazonas increased 11.7% in relation to the same month of 2004 – in June, in the same comparison the growth was 29.8%. The accumulated indicators in the year and in the last twelve months also registered increases, of 19.0% and 15.4% respectively.

The monthly behavior (11,7%) was positively influenced by 5 of the 11 surveyed segments, especially electronic material and communication equipment (28.7%) as a result of the increase in the production of mobile telephones and television sets. It was also influenced by petroleum refining and alcohol production (36.3%) - boasted by diesel oil and other fuel oils - and other transport equipment (3.2%), due to the major manufacturing of pieces and motorcycle items. Six activities presented negative rates, especially rubber and plastic (-26.2%) and edition and printing (-19.1%), mainly due to decreases in the manufacturing of pieces and plastic accessories, PET bottles and videotapes.

In the accumulated of 2005, 8 out of 11 surveyed segments contributed positively for the growth of 19.0%; the most expressive influences came from electronic material and communication equipment (40.0%), food products and beverages (12.5%) and other transport equipment (12.1%), due to increases in several items: mobile telephones; manufacturing of syrups for beverage elaboration, soft drinks and motorcycles. By its way, rubber and plastic (-23.5%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (-2.2%) and mining and quarrying (-3.8%) represented the highest negative impacts.

Pará

The industry of Pará, in July, decreased 0.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, also a result worst than the one of June (6.5%). The indicators for larger periods registered increases of 4.3% in the accumulated index of the year and 7.6% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

The decrease in the comparison July 05/ July 04 can be explained by the negative behavior of three among six surveyed segments and by the slowdown in the mining sector, which answers for approximately 40.0% of the industrial structure of the state. This sector passed from an expansion of 20.0% in June to an increase of only 5.7% in July. Still with moderate growth, the mining industry presented the highest positive impact in the overall result, due mainly to the mining ores. In the manufacturing industry, the main negative contributions came from wood (-20.7%) and non-metallic minerals (-16.7%), in which stood out the reductions in the production of sawed wood and processed kaolin respectively.

The increase of 4.3% in the accumulated January-July was due mainly to the mining industry (11.6%), which presented expansion mainly of iron ores. The other positive contribution came from basic metallurgy (3.4%), in which stood out the increase in the production of unconnected aluminum in raw form. Non-metallic minerals (-9.1%) and cellulose and paper (-6.4%) brought the main negative pressures, registering decreases in several items, mainly processed kaolin and toilet paper respectively.

Northeast Region

The industrial production of the Northeast Region presented growth of 1.6% in July, in the comparison with July 2004, after retraction observed in June (-1.8%). An expansion was observed also in the accumulated indicators in the year and in the last 12 months, respectively, of 4.1% and 6.5%.

In the monthly rate, the increase was sustained mainly by the manufacturing industry (2.2%), since mining and quarrying presented recoil of 5.0%, due, mainly, to the lower production of petroleum and natural gas. Among the ten activities of manufacturing industry, five registered increase, standing out petroleum refining and alcohol production (2.4%), due mainly to the positive behavior of the items diesel oil and automotive gasoline. Also with important contribution, non-metallic minerals (16.8%) and food products and beverages (2.2%) were particularly influenced, respectively, by the items cement and pre- manufactured items for construction and soft drinks, beer and draft beer. On the other hand, the main negative impacts came from chemical products (-3.3%), mainly as a consequence of the decrease of the production of polyethylene– and apparel (-20.6%) influenced mainly by the item long pants for feminine use.

The growth of the accumulated indicator of the year (4.1%) shows the expansion of 8 among 11 surveyed sectors. The main highlights were food products and beverages (6.8%), chemical products (4.6%) and non-metallic minerals (18.9%), standing out the influence of the following items respectively: soft drinks, beers and draft beer; PVC, o xileno, cement and pre-manufactured items for construction. In an opposite way, the main negative impacts came from the mining and quarrying industry (-3.3%), with a predominant fall of crude oils of petroleum and natural gas, and basic metallurgy (-2.9%), standing out the recoil in the manufacturing of carbon steel square bars and gold bars.

Ceará

In July, the industrial production of Ceará recoiled 6.3% in relation to the same month of the previous year (in the same comparison, in June the rate increased 2.5%). The indicators for larger periods, nevertheless, continued positive: 4.0% in the accumulated index of the year and 10.2% in the accumulated index of the last 12 months.

The retraction in the monthly rate broke a sequence of three positive results. Eight among ten surveyed industrial activities presented decrease. The main negative contribution came from food products and beverages (-6.8%), due mainly to the diminishment of the production of processed cashew nuts, as a result of a technical stoppage in a big company of the sector. It can also be mentioned the decrease observed in basic metallurgy (-54.4%), caused by the lower manufacturing of carbon steel square bars and influenced mainly by a high base of comparison – and in apparel (-14.3%) – due to a reduction observed in the item long pants for feminine use. On the positive side, we may mention the expansion in non- metallic minerals (15.0%), due to the increase in the production of cement.

In the accumulated index of the year, the production of the state increased 4.0%, with increment in six among ten investigated sectors. The major positive influences were observed in non-metallic minerals (36.5%), due to the major manufacturing of cement; apparel (19.2%), where it was relevant the increase in the production of long pants for feminine use and of apparel for professional use; and textiles (4.9%), sustained by cotton thread. The main negative pressures came from basic metallurgy (-26.0%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-4.9%), explained, respectively, by the recoils in carbon steel square bars and diesel oil and other fuel oils.

Pernambuco

The industry of Pernambuco registered in July expansion in the main indicators of production: 1.6% in the monthly indicator (above the 1.0% registered in June in the same comparison), 1.8% in the accumulated index of the year and 2.4% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months.

The increment in the monthly comparison results from the expansion in 6 among 11 surveyed sectors. This result was sustained by the good performance of food products and beverages, activity of major participation in the local structure, which increased 15.5%, due mainly to the larger manufacturing of beer, draft beer and ice-creams. It can be also mentioned the increment in electric machines, equipment and materials (8.9%) – boasted by the production of electric batteries and cells - and non-metallic minerals (7.1%) – due to the manufacturing of sink, bath tub and bidet and concrete mass. The main falls were observed in metal products (-23.2%) and basic metallurgy (-6.9%), as a consequence of the decreases in aluminum cans to be used as containers and carbon steel square bars respectively.

In the accumulated index of the year (1.8%), 7 among 11 surveyed industrial sectors presented positive rates. The main impacts were observed in chemical products (10.8%) – boasted by the production of rubber of styrene-butadiene and calcium hypochlorite - and food products and beverages (3.9%), due to the increase in the manufacturing of ice creams and soft drinks. The main retractions were observed in metal products (-20.1%) and in the textile sector (-27.1%), due to the recoil in aluminum cans to be used as containers and cotton thread.

Bahia

After the recoil observed in June (-2.1%), the industry of Bahia increased 8.3% in July compared to the same month of the previous year. For larger periods, the production continues presenting positive rates: 3.2% in the accumulated index of the year and 6.4% in the accumulated index of the last 12 months.

The expansion in the comparison July 05/ July 04 shows the favorable behavior of seven among nine surveyed segments. The main positive impact came from petroleum refining and alcohol production (22.4%), influenced mainly by the major production of diesel oil and other fuel oils and gasoline. Stood out also the increase in basic metallurgy (22.5%) and cellulose and paper (13.7%), which presented, respectively, increments in the manufacturing of the items copper square bars, profiles and bars and cellulose. Chemical products (-0.9%) and mining and quarrying (-4.7%) were the two only segments with negative rates. In these activities, stood out the recoils in polyethylene of high density and crude petroleum oils.

In the accumulated index from January to July, the growth of the industry of Bahia (3.2%) was boasted by the favorable behavior of the majority (seven) among the nine activities surveyed. The industry was influenced mainly by the increments of food products and beverages (9.5%), chemical products (2.7%) and automotive vehicles (44.2%), mainly due to the major manufacturing of refined soy oil, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and automobiles respectively. Among the two segments that reduced the production, stands out the negative performance of basic metallurgy (-5.8%), due to the recoils in gold bars and steel square bars.

Minas Gerais

In July, the industrial production of Minas Gerais expanded 6.0% in the comparison with July 2004, summing 24 consecutive months of growth. For larger periods, the results were also positive: 7.5% in the accumulated index of the year and 7.2% in the accumulated index of the last 12 months.

The increase in the monthly indicator had as main contribution the performance of mining and quarrying (15.8%), boasted mainly by the production of iron ore. The general growth was also influenced by the manufacturing industry (4.4%), where 8 out of 12 activities presented positive results, specially metal products (56.4%) – due to the significant increase of the product iron and steel structures and automobile vehicles (11.3%). On the other hand, stands out as main negative pressure the sector of basic metallurgy (-9.4%), influenced mainly by items, stainless steel plates, and bobbins and steel tubes.

In relation to the accumulated indicator of the year, the growth (7.5%) shows the positive performance of 9 among 13 surveyed groups of industry. The main highlights were automotive vehicles (16.1%) and mining and quarrying (14.2%), which had as main influences, respectively, automobiles and iron ore. Among the activities with negative performance, stand out basic metallurgy (-5.0%), due, mainly, to the decrease in the production of bobbins and stainless steel plates and carbon steel square bars.

Espírito Santo

The industrial production of Espírito Santo presented, in July, retraction of 7.2% in the monthly index, the second consecutive negative result in this type of comparison (in June, the rate was –2.7%). It was observed, nevertheless, expansion in the accumulated indicators in the year and in the last 12 months: 1.6% and 3.9% respectively.

The decrease in the monthly comparison can be explained by the results of the mining and quarrying industry (-2,5%) and manufacturing industry (-9.2%). The first one, mainly due to the performance of petroleum crude oils. Regarding the recoil in the manufacturing industry it was a consequence especially of the unfavorable behaviors of basic metallurgy (-26.7%) especially ingots, blocks or steel plates and the sector of food products and beverages (-5.3%), especially the products cattle meat and bonbons. Presented positive results the segments of non-metallic minerals (7.4%) and cellulose and paper (2.2%), due, mainly, to the increase in the production of cement and cellulose.

The accumulated indicator in the seven first months of 2005 (1.6%) showed the growth in four among five surveyed groups of industry. Cellulose and paper (4.4%), food products and beverages (5.1%), mining and quarrying (1.9%) and non-metallic minerals (3.3%) were influenced by the following products: cellulose; bonbons and soft drinks; petroleum crude oils and iron ore; and cement. The only negative result came from basic metallurgy (-3.4%), due mainly, to the product ingots, blocks or steel plates.

Rio de Janeiro

In July the industry of Rio de Janeiro decreased 1.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, the second consecutive negative result in this type of comparison – in June it fell 1.5%. In the indicators for larger periods, nevertheless, the results are positive, in the accumulated in the year (0.9%) as in the last 12 months (2.0%). It can be mentioned that the three indexes of the state are below the national average, of 0.5%, 4.3% and 5.8% respectively.

In the monthly comparison, the recoil was influenced by the manufacturing industry (-5.7%), once that the mining and quarrying industry grew (18.0%) for the fifth consecutive month and was the main positive impact over the overall rate. Among the seven activities of the manufacturing industry which presented slowdown, stood out petroleum refining and alcohol production (-19.1%), mainly by the decrease in diesel oil and gasoline, still influenced by the shutdown in a big company of the sector, which occurred in June. It can be stressed also the negative contribution of basic metallurgy (-8.3%) and of the sector of rubber and plastic (-25.3%), groups pressured mainly by the lower production of steel bobbins and tires respectively. On the other hand, automotive vehicles (10.3%) and the textile sector (31.1%) brought the major positive influences in the manufacturing industry, as a consequence of the increment in the manufacturing of cars and cotton thread respectively.

The accumulated index in the year (0.9%) is a result of the expansion of 6 among 13 surveyed sectors. The favorable performance of the mining industry (13.8%) during 2005 was the main determinant for the slight general growth. On its way, the manufacturing industry registered recoil in the production (-1.8%), with basic metallurgy (-10.9%) answering for the principal negative impact, influenced mainly by the recoil of steel bobbins and iron and steel tubes and profiles. It can be stressed the decrease observed in rubber and plastic (-24.3%), edition and printing (-10.5%) and in the pharmaceutical industry (-7.8%). Among the five groups of the manufacturing industry that presented positive rates, the major highlights came from non-metallic minerals (29.2%) and automotive vehicles (18.5%), strongly pressured by the foreign demand for sliced granite and automobiles respectively.

São Paulo

The indexes of industrial production in São Paulo remained positive in July: 1.0% in relation to the same month of the previous year (considerably lower to the 8.0% registered, in the same comparison, in June); 5.5% in the accumulated index of the year; and 8.1% in the accumulated index of the last twelve months – results above the ones observed for the total of the country.

Compared to July 2004, the growth showed the expansion of 7 among 20 investigated sectors. In June, nevertheless, they were 14 the ones that grew in this same comparison. Among the ones that had the major participation in the overall rate, stood out edition and printing (25.6%), pharmaceutical industry (17.8%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (7.5%), due especially, to the increments in the production of magazines, printed matter; remedies; and gasoline and alcohol. On the other hand, the main negative pressures came from the textile industries (-15.7%) and metal products (-9.8%), due mainly to the recoils in synthetic fibers and cotton threads and metallic screen of iron and steel wire.

In the accumulated of the year (5.5%), 15 groups expanded the production, especially the pharmaceutical (25.4%), edition and printing (20.2%) and machines and equipment (10.5%), due mainly to increases in several items such as remedies, newspapers, magazines and equipment elevators/ merchandise transporters and loading transporters. The main negative impacts came from textiles (-7.0%), electronic material and communication equipment (-4.4%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-1.8%). The main products responsible for these decreases were synthetic fibers and blankets; radios and communication equipment; and diesel oil and other fuels and naphthas.

Paraná

The recoil of 1.0% in the industrial production of Paraná in July occurred after 31 consecutive months of positive results in this type of comparison. The accumulated indicator of the year increased 6.6%; and the accumulated index in the last 12 months, 10.3%.

The fall in the monthly comparison shows the unfavorable behavior of 10 among 14 surveyed groups. The ones that most contributed to the formation of the overall index were food products (-6.8%), due mainly to the product soy tarts and bagasses, machines and equipment (-14.2%), boasted by agricultural trucks and harvest machines and wood (-16.2%), due, mainly, to the diminishment in the production of plywood and wood panels. The sector that stood out with the major positive contribution was petroleum refining and alcohol production (34.2%), pressured by the product diesel oil and other fuel oils.

In the accumulated indicator of the year (6.6%), eight segments presented increase. The highlights were automotive vehicles (28.6%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (26.4%) and edition and printing (38.1%) – due to the growth, respectively, in automobiles and trucks; diesel oil and automotive gasoline; and didactic books. The main retraction was observed in other chemical products (-30.7%), with major contribution of the item adobes and fertilizers.

Santa Catarina

The industry of Santa Catarina presented, in July, recoil of 7.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, the first negative rate in this type of comparison since February 2004. The industrial production of the state continued presenting positive results, although less intense, in the accumulated index of the year (4.2%) and in the last 12 months (8.0%).

The recoil in the monthly rate results from decreases in the majority (8) of the 11 industrial activities investigated. The performance of machines and equipment (-27.8%), pressured mainly by the lower manufacturing of compressors and freezers answers for the main negative impact in the general average. It can also be stressed the negative contributions of apparel (-18.6%) and electric machines, equipment and materials (-22.6%), due to the reduction in knitting clothing for masculine use and electric motors respectively. Cellulose and paper (11.1%) and automotive vehicles (11.0%) were the two main positive indexes. In these sectors, the products with highest highlight were paper sacks and bags and buses and trucks bodies respectively.

The accumulated production in January- July (4.2%) presented positive results in eight activities. The expansions which more pressured the overall rate occurred in automotive vehicles (68.4%) and food products (5.3%). In these activities, stood out respectively, the items buses and trucks bodies and frozen pork meat. Once again, machines and equipment (-6.9%) brought the main negative impact upon the overall index, influenced by the decrease in the production of refrigerators and freezers.

Rio Grande do Sul

With a decrease of 8.7% in the monthly index, in July, the industry of Rio Grande do Sul reached the lowest result in this year in this type of comparison. Also presented recoils the accumulated indexes in the year (-4.0%) and in the last twelve months (-0.6%).

The decrease in the monthly rate showed the negative performance of 11 among 14 groups surveyed. The more significant were tobacco (-20.9%) and machines and equipment (-25.8%). In these industries stood out, respectively, the recoils in the items processed tobacco and harvesting machines. The major positive influences came from cellulose and paper (23.6%) – with increase mainly of the production of cellulose – and petroleum refining and alcohol production (6.8%), due mainly to the manufacturing of gasoline.

In the accumulated in the year (-4.0%), 9 among 14 surveyed groups pointed retraction, especially machines and equipment (-20.6%), tobacco (-8.6%) and other chemical products (-5.6%), which registered, respectively, decreases in the production of harvesting machines, processed tobacco; and low density polyethylene. Food products (3.6%) and leather articles and footwear (3.7%) brought the major positive pressures, due to increases of products such as partially milled rice, powdered milk; plastic and leather feminine footwear.

Goiás

In July, the industrial production of Goiás, presented increase of 6.7% in relation to the same month of the previous year, a lower result than the one of June (10.6%), considerably above the one observed in national level (0.5%) in the same comparison. The accumulated indicators in the year (6.9%) and in the last twelve months (9.0%) were also positive.

The growth in the monthly comparison occurred due to the behavior of food products and beverages (9.9%), a segment responsible for almost 65.0% of the industrial production of the state and presented increase mainly in the items beer, draft beer and frozen cattle meat. In basic metallurgy (15.6%), the second most important positive contribution, stood out the production of nickel iron. The two only negative contributions came from chemical products (-10.3%) and mining and quarrying (-2.8%), especially due to decreases in the production of adobes of animal origin and amianthus fibers respectively.

The accumulated index January- July (6.9%) resulted also, from the behavior of food products and beverages (8.6%), boasted by the manufacturing of flowers and soy "pellets", beer and draft beer. Other three among five groups surveyed recorded growth, especially basic metallurgy (12.4%) and mining and quarrying (8.2%), in which stood out, respectively, the items nickel iron, iron niobium and amianthus in fibers. The only negative pressure came from chemical products (-7.4%), due to a lower production mainly of adobes of animal origin.
