The Extensive Consumer Price Index –15 (IPCA-15) had change of 0.32% in October and remained below the result of 0.49% recorded in September. From January to October, the index presents a change of 5.97% and in the last twelve months a change of 6.64%. To calculate IPCA-15, prices collected in the period September 14 to October 13 were compared to the prices charged in the period August 13 to September 13.

The deceleration of the monthly rate had a significant influence of food products, with a fall of 0.26%, after a hike of 0.42% observed in September. Food products in natura were the main responsibles for the decrease. Prices of tomatoes (-10.49%), potatoes (-10.23%) and greeneries (-8.46%) dropped. Several products turned cheaper or presented reduction in the growth rate of prices. Refined sugar, for example, that had pressured the index in September with a hike of 14.21%, had a much slower increase (6.06%). White plantation sugar, that in September had increased 5.69%, had a small drop (-0.06%).

Alcohol also presented a strong recoil: from 8.00% in September to 0.85% in October. Gasoline, with a hike of 1.16% in September, turned 0.67% cheaper in October since the prices were collected before the last readjustement. The fall in cooking gas was intensified: from –0.74% in September to –1.16% in October.

Among other items that had a positive pressure over the index, stood out line telephony with accounts increasing 1.51% in September and 2.18% in October, following the first parcel of the extraordinary readjustement allowed in this year. Other items also stood out: elecricity (from –0.03% to 0.71%), water and sewerage prices (from 1.21% to 1.35%), and apparel (from 0.67% to 1.00%).

Considering the areas, the highest result was observed in Goiânia (1.17%) because of the readjustement of 20% in the tariffs of electricity. Curitiba (-0.02%), with a slight drop, presented the smallest result.

The IPCA-15 refers to families with monetary income from any source ranging from 01 to 40 minimum wages. It includes the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, besides Brasília and Goiânia. Its methodology is the same of the IPCA and the difference between the two indexes is the period of price collecting.
